Before you clean your mouse, check the owner's manual to see if the manufacturer hasprovided you with instructions for your specific mouse. If so, follow those instructions. Ifnot, the following steps are basic cleaning tips that will help keep your mouse clean.1. Unplug the mouse from the USB or PS/2 port. If the mouse is plugged into the PS/2 port, you will need to shut down the computer before unplugging it.2. Moisten a cotton cloth with rubbing alcohol, and use it to clean the top and bottom of the mouse.3. If you have a mechanical mouse, remove the tracking ball by turning the ball- cover ring counterclockwise. Then clean the tracking ball and the inside of the mouse with a cotton cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol.4. Let all of the parts dry before reassembling and reconnecting the mouse. If you are connecting it to a PS/2 port, you will need to connect it before turning on the computer.If you want to give the mouse a quick cleaning, place it on a clean white sheet ofpaper and move the mouse back and forth. Some of the dust and particles should ruboff onto the paper.Cleaning the monitorDirt, fingerprints, and dust can make your computer screen difficult to read; however, it'seasy to clean your screenwhen needed. Although there are monitor-cleaning kits you canbuy, they may damage your monitor if they are designed for a different type of monitor.For example, a monitor cleaner that is designed for glass screens may not work withsome nonglass LCD screens. The safest method is simply to use a soft cleancloth moistened withwater.Do not use glass cleaner to clean a monitor. Many screens have anti-glare coatings thatcan be damaged by glass cleaner.1. Turn off the computer. 248

2. Unplug the monitor from the power. If you are using a laptop, unplug the laptop. 3. Use a soft clean cloth moistened with water to wipe the screen clean. Do not spray any liquids directly onto the screen. The liquid could leak into the monitor and damage the internal components.15.6 Laptops, Sensors – Various sensors used in different locations of a hotel–type, uses and cost effectivenessA laptop or a notebook is a portable personal computer with a clamshell form factor, suitablefor mobile use. There was a difference between laptops andnotebooks in the past, but nowadaysit has gradually died away. Laptops are commonly used in a variety of settings, including atwork, in education, and for personal multimedia.A laptop combines the components and inputs of a desktop computer, includingdisplay, speakers, keyboard and pointing device (such as a touchpad or a trackpad) into a singledevice. Most modern-day laptops also have an integrated webcam and a microphone. A laptopcan be powered either from a rechargeable battery, or bymains electricity via an AC adapter.Laptop is a diverse category of devices and other more specific terms, such as ruggednotebook or convertible, refer to specialist types of laptops, which have been optimized forspecific uses. Hardware specifications change significantly between different types, makes andmodels of laptops.Portable computers, which later developed into modern laptops, were originally considered to bea small niche market, mostly for specialized field applications, such as the military, accountancy,for sales representatives etc. As portable computers developed and became more like modernlaptops, becoming smaller, lighter, cheaper, and more powerful, they became very widely usedfor a variety of purposes.Since the introduction of portable computers in late 70s, their form has seriously changed overdecades, spawning a variety of visually and technologically differing subclasses.Traditional laptopAppleMacBook Pro, a laptop with a traditional design 249

The form of a traditional laptop computer is a clamshell, with a screen on one of its inner sidesand a keyboard on the opposite. It can be easily folded t o conserve space while traveling. Thescreen and keyboard are inaccessible while closed. Devices of this form are commonly called a'traditional laptop' or notebook, particularly if they have a screen of 13 to 17 inches diameter andrun a full-featured operating system like Windows 8.1, OS X or Linux. Traditional laptops arethe most common form of laptop, although Chromebooks, Convertible Laptops, Ultrabooks andLaplets (described below) are becoming more common, with similar performance being achievedin their more portable or affordable forms. Subnotebook Sony VAIO P series subnotebookA subnotebook or an ultraportable is a laptop designed and marketed with an emphasis onportability (small size, low weight and often longer battery life). Subnotebooks are usuallysmaller and lighter than standard laptops, weighing between 0.8 and 2 kg (2 to 5 pounds), with abattery life, exceeding 10 hours. Since the introduction of netbooks and ultrabooks, the linebetween subnotebooks and either category has been blurry. Netbooks are in essence a morebasic-featured and a cheap subcategory of subnotebooks, and while some ultrabooks have ascreen size too large to qualify as subnotebooks, certain ultrabooks fit in a subnotebook category.One notable example of a subnotebook is Apple Macbook Air. 250

Netbook A Samsung Chromebook netbookNetbook was a form of a laptop as inexpensive, light-weight, energy-efficient device, especiallysuited for wireless communication and Internet access. Netbooks first became commerciallyavailable in around 2008 on the market, featuring a weight, a display size and a pricecombination of < 1 kg, < 9\" and < U.S. $400respectively. The name netbook (with net shortfor Internet) is used as \"the device excels in web-based computing performance\".[19] To beginwith, netbooks were mostly sold with light-weight variants of the Linux operating system,although later versions often have Windows XP or Windows 7 operating systems. All majorNetbook producing companies stopped producing them by the end of 2012.Convertible A Lenovo X61 convertible laptopTypical modern convertibles have a complex joint between the keyboard housing and the displaypermitting the display panel to swivel and then lie flat on the keyboard housing. Mostconvertibles feature a touchscreen display alongside the traditional touchpad, to work ina tablet mode. The convertibles fit both in laptop andtablet device categories, but usuallyconsidered laptops, due to increased size and weight over the mainstream tablets.The single joint used to enable the rotate and swivel motion of the screen creates a physical pointof weakness on the laptop. Some manufacturers have attempted to overcome these weak pointsby adopting innovative methods such as a sliding design in which the screen slides up from theslate-like position and locks into place to provide the laptop mode. Due to the design ofconvertibles, they have few other weaknesses over traditional laptops, although a smaller form isoften desired to increase portability. 251

Laplet Microsoft Surface Pro 3, a typical lapletThe most recent laptop device category is a laplet. It is a portmanteau of thewordslaptop and tablet and it is a crossover of these device types. Although being typicallyconsidered as a tablet (by such agencies as FAA and TSA), laplets share certain similarities tolaptops, and may be considered as its alternative form. Laplets are often marketed as a laptopreplacement tablets.Its specification is most closely resembles one of an Ultra book, but laplets are made up of twodistinct parts, offering a touchscreen display which can be separated from the keyboard. Lapletsare often very thin (around 10 mm) and light devices with a long battery life. Compared tomainstream tablets, laplets can be distinguished from them as they feature an x86-architecture CPU (typically low- or ultra-low-voltage model), such as Intel Core i5, run a full-featured OS like Windows 8.1, and have a number of typical laptop I/O ports, suchas USB and Mini DisplayPort.Laplets are designed to be used not only as a media consumption device, but also as a validdesktop or laptop replacement due to their ability to run desktop applications, such as AdobePhotoshop, connect multiple peripheral devices, such as a mouse, keyboard and a number ofexternal displays.Desktop replacementAlienware desktop replacement gaming laptop 252

A desktop-replacement laptop is a class of large device, which is not intended primarily formobile use. They are bulkier and not as portable as other laptops, and are intended for use ascompact and transportable alternatives to a desktop computer. Desktop replacements are largerand typically heavier, than other classes of laptops. They are capable of containing morepowerful components and have a 15-inch or larger display.Desktop replacement laptops' operation time on batteries is typically shorter than other laptops,in rare cases they have no battery at all. In the past, some laptops in this class used a limitedrange of desktop components to provide better performance for the same price at the expense ofa battery life, although the practice has largely died out.The names Media Center Laptops and Gaming Laptops are used to describe specializednotebook computers, often overlapping with the desktop replacement form factor.Rugged notebookA rugged laptop is designed to reliably operate in harsh usage conditions such as strongvibrations, extreme temperatures, and wet or dusty environments. Rugged laptops are usuallydesigned from scratch, rather than adapted from regular consumer laptop models. Ruggedlaptops are bulkier, heavier, and much more expensive than regular laptops,[25] and thus areseldom seen in regular consumer use.The design features found in rugged laptops include a rubber sheeting under keyboard keys, asealed port and connector covers, a passive cooling, very bright displays, easily readable indaylight, cases and frames made of magnesium alloys that are much stronger, than plastic foundin commercial laptops and solid-state storage devices or hard disc drives, that are shock mountedto withstand constant vibrations. Rugged laptops are commonly used by public safety services(police, fire and medical emergency), military, utilities, field service technicians, construction,mining and oil drilling personnel. Rugged laptops are usually sold to organizations, rather thanindividuals, and are rarely marketed via retail channels.A sensor is a device that detects events or changes in quantities and provides a correspondingoutput, generally as an electrical or optical signal; for example, a thermocouple convertstemperature to an output voltage. But a mercury-in-glass thermometer is also a sensor; itconverts the measured temperature into expansion and contraction of a liquid which can be readon a calibrated glass tube.Sensors are used in everyday objects such as touch-sensitive elevator buttons (tactile sensor) andlamps which dim or brighten by touching the base, besides innumerable applications of whichmost people are never aware. With advances inmicromachinery and easy-to-use microcontroller platforms, the uses of sensors have expanded beyond the more traditionalfields of temperature, pressure or flow measurement, for example into MARG sensors. 253

Moreover, analog sensors such as potentiometers and force-sensing resistors are still widelyused. Applications include manufacturing and machinery, airplanes and aerospace, cars,medicine and robotics.A sensor's sensitivity indicates how much the sensor's output changes when the input quantitybeing measured changes. For instance, if the mercury in a thermometer moves 1 cm when thetemperature changes by 1 °C, the sensitivity is 1 cm/°C. Some sensors can also have an impacton what they measure; for instance, a room temperature thermometer inserted into a hot cup ofliquid cools the liquid while the liquid heats the thermometer. Sensors need to be designed tohave a small effect on what is measured; making the sensor smaller often improves this and mayintroduce other advantages. Technological progress allows more and more sensors to bemanufactured on a microscopic scale as microsensors using MEMS technology. In most cases, amicrosensor reaches a significantly higher speed and sensitivity comparedwith macroscopic approaches15.7 SummaryAudiovisual (AV) means possessing both a sound and a visual component, such as slide-tape presenta films, television programs, church services and live theater productions. Businesspresentations are also often audiovisual. In a typical presentation, the presenter provides theaudio by speaking, and supplements it with a series of images projected onto a screen, eitherfrom a slide projector, or from a computer connected to a projector using presentation software.Computer-based audiovisual equipment is often used in education, with many schools anduniversities installing projection equipment and using interactive whiteboard technology.15.8 Review Question 1.
