นิทาน เรื่องแอนโดรเคิลกับสิงโต (Androcles and the Lion)

ทาสคนหน่ึงมีนามวา่ อนั โดรเคลิ ส์ คร้ังหน่ึงเคยหนีเขา้ ไปหลบอยใู่ นป่ า ในขณะที่เขาเดินเตร่ไปมาอยแู่ ถวน้นั เขาไดไ้ ปพบกบั สิงโตตวั หน่ึงกาลงั นอนร้องครวญครางอยใู่ นตอนแรกเขาวงิ่ หนีเอาตวั รอด แตเ่ ขาไดเ้ ห็นวา่ สิงโตไม่ไดไ้ ล่ตามเขามา เขาจึงหนั กลบั ไปดูและไดเ้ ดินกลบั เขา้ ไปหามนั เม่ือเขาเขา้ ไปใกลๆ้ สิงโตไดเ้ หยยี ดองุ้ เทา้ หนา้ ของมนั ออกมา มนั บวมเป่ งและมีเลือดออก อนั โดรเคิลส์ไดส้ งั เกตเห็นวา่ มีหนามใหญ่ทิ่มแทงเขา้ ไป ซ่ึง ทาใหม้ นั เจบ็ ปวดมาก A slave named Androcles once escaped from his master and fled to the forest. As he was wandering about there he came upon a lion lying down moaning and groaning. At first he turned to flee, but finding that the lion did not pursue him, he turned back and went up to him. As he come near, the lion put out his paw, which was all swollen and bleeding and found that a huge thorn had got into it, and was causing all the pain.

เขาดึงหนามน้นั ออกมาจากอุง้ เทา้ ของสิงโต แลว้ พนั แผลท่ีอุง้ เทา้ ของสิงโตเอาไว้ ซ่ึงในไมช่ า้ มนั ก็ลุกข้นึ ได้ และ เลียมือของอนั โดรเคิลส์ราวกบั สุนขั แลว้ สิงโตกพ็ าอนั โดรเคิลส์ไปยงั ถ้าที่มนั อยู่ และทุกๆวนั มนั จะนาเน้ือมาให้ เขากินเพอื่ ยงั ชีพ แต่หลงั จากน้นั ไมน่ านนกั ท้งั อนั โดรเคิลส์ และสิงโตก็ถูกจบั ตวั ไวอ้ นั โดรเคลิ ส์ถูกตดั สินใหถ้ กู สิงโตกิน He pulled out the torn and bound up the paw of the lion, who was soon able to rise and lick the hand of Androcles like a dog. Then the lion took Androcles to his cave, and every day used to bring him meat from which to live But shortly afterwards both Androcles and the lion were captured. The slave was sentenced to be thrown to the lion, after the latter had been kept without food for several days.

หลงั จากที่สิงโตถูกขงั เอาไวใ้ หอ้ ดอาหารอยหู่ ลายวนั สมเด็จพระเจา้ จกั รพรรดิ พร้อมดว้ ยขา้ ราชสานกั ทุก พระองค์ ไดม้ าชมการแสดงอนั โดรเคลิ ส์ไดถ้ กู นาออกมาท่ีกลางสังเวียน ขณะน้นั สิงโต กถ็ กู ปลอ่ ยออกมาจาก คอกที่ขงั ไว้ มนั วงิ่ ออกมาในสนามพร้อมกบั คารามใส่เหยอ่ื ของมนั แต่เมื่อมนั ไดเ้ ขา้ มาใกลอ้ นั โดรเคิลส์ มนั กจ็ า สหายเก่าของมนั ได้ มนั จึงกระดิกหางเขา้ คลอเคลีย และเลียมือของเขาเหมือนหมาที่เป็นเพอ่ื นกนั The Emperor and all his court came to see the spectacle and Androcles was led out into the middle of the arena. Soon the lion was let loose from his den and rushed bounding and roaring toward its victim, but as soon as he come near to Androcles he recognized his friend, and fawned upon him, and licked his hands like a friendly dog.

พระเจา้ จกั พรรดิซ่ึงจึงสงสยั ในสิ่งท่ีเกิดข้นึ จึงเรียกใหอ้ นั โดรเคิลส์ เขา้ ไปหาพระองคม์ ื่อพระองคไ์ ดฟ้ ังดงั น้นั ผู้ เป็นทาสจึงไดร้ ับการอภยั โทษ และถกู ปล่อยตวั ใหเ้ ป็นอิสระ และสิงโต ก็ไดถ้ กู ปลอ่ ยใหก้ ลบั สู่ป่ าอนั เป็นถ่ินฐาน ของมนั ซ่ึงอนั โดรเคิลส์ไดเ้ ล่าเร่ืองท้งั หมดใหพ้ ระองคฟ์ ัง The Emperor, surprised at his, summoned Androcles to him, who told him the whole story. Whereupon the slave was pardoned and freed, and the lion let loose to his native forest.
