Date: ______________ Learner‛s Hub 15 The Tall Giraffe by Guy Belleranti Most people know what a giraffe looks like. They’re tall, spotted animals from the African savanna. They’re famous for their long necks that allow them to munch on treetop leaves that other animals cannot reach. With its 6-foot long legs and 6-foot long neck a male giraffe can grow over 18 feet in height. That’s almost as tall as a two-storey building! Even a baby giraffe has a long neck and legs. In fact, the calf is 6 feet tall at birth and can stand within an hour. We humans have seven bones, or vertebrae, in our short little necks. So, how many vertebrae do you think a giraffe has in its neck? Maybe 20? Or 50? Or 100? In fact, a giraffe’s neck has exactly the same number of bones in its neck as a human! However, the giraffe’s vertebrae are larger and much longer. A giraffe’s heart is also long, with a male’s heart being up to two feet. It takes a powerful heart to move blood up the long neck into the brain. The giraffe has special valves in their arteries. These valves prevent blood from rushing to the head when the giraffe bends low to drink. And when it drinks, it takes a long drink, swallowing up to 10 gallons of water. The giraffe must spread its long legs apart so its long neck can reach the water. Since it can’t protect itself when in this position it doesn’t drink Gr. 3 Super Teacher Worksheets - www.superteacherworksheets.com 51

The giraffe wraps its long 18-inch tongue around the tree’s branches and strips off the leaves. The long tongue’s roughness helps protect it from the thorns A giraffe is a ruminant, which means it has a four chambered stomach like a cow. After they swallow leaves the first time the giraffe will bring the leaves back up their throat and chew again for long periods. A healthy adult giraffe does not have many natural predators. Its hooves are as long and wide as a dinner plate, and it can kick its long legs any direction. The kick is so strong it can even kill a lion. With its long neck, long heart, long tongue, long legs, and long hooves, the giraffe is surely one of the most beautiful animals on the African savanna. More Fascinating Giraffe Facts The giraffe has the shortest sleep requirements of any mammal. A giraffe sleeps less than two hours per day! Although they’re usually quiet, giraffes can make sounds. Male giraffes can make loud coughs. Females can whistle to call their young. Giraffes can also grunt, snort, and hiss. A male giraffe is called a bull. A female is a cow, and a young giraffe is a calf. A group of giraffes is a herd. 52 Super Teacher Worksheets - www.superteacherworksheets.com Gr. 3

Date: ______________ Learner‛s Hub 16 The Scariest Scarecrow by Kelly Hashway Ben couldn’t wait to go to Uncle Darrell’s farm. Uncle Darrell had the best corn, apples, and pumpkins ever. And since Ben was going to be spending the weekend, he’d get to help Uncle Darrell pick them all. Ben said a quick goodbye to his parents and ran from the car. He knew Uncle Darrell would be in the field tending to the crops. But when Ben got there, he saw Uncle Darrell wasn’t the only one in the field. There were big black crows everywhere. “What’s going on?” Ben asked. Uncle Darrell shooed the crows away and turned to Ben. “Hey, Benny. I’m just getting rid of these crows. They’re trying to steal my crops.” “Where’s the scarecrow?” Ben asked. Uncle Darrell usually had a giant scarecrow to keep the birds away. “It was ruined in the last storm, and now every time I leave the field, the crows start attacking my crops. I don’t have time to make a new scarecrow right now.” Ben looked around the field. The crows were already coming back. “I’ll make a scarecrow for you.” “You will? But I thought you wanted to pick pumpkins and go for a hayride.” “I do, but this is more important.” Ben spotted a medium- sized pumpkin, perfect and round, about five feet away. “Besides, 56 Super Teacher Worksheets - www.superteacherworksheets.com Gr. 3

And I need some overalls and a flannel shirt.” There are plenty of those in the house. Help yourself.” Ben ran into the house and found an old pair of overalls with holes in the knees. He grabbed a flannel shirt that looked two sizes too small for Uncle Darrell. Then he raced back outside and picked the pumpkin he’d eyed earlier. Uncle Darrell was putting hay bales into the back of his truck. “Any extra hay I can use?” Ben asked. “Sure. Anything else you need?” “Yeah, a big stake. One that can run the whole length of the scarecrow.” of it. Uncle Darrel helped Ben find a stake and together they fastened the pumpkin on the top. “I can take it from here,” Ben said. He stuffed hay in the clothes and attached them to the stake, too. Then Ben drew the scariest face he could imagine on the pumpkin. “Whoa, that is one scary scarecrow,” Uncle Darrell said. “Let’s see if the crows think it’s scary.” Ben and Uncle Darrel shooed the crows away and placed the scarecrow in the middle of the field. Then they backed away and waited to see if the crows came back. None did. “It works!” Ben cheered. “Yes, Ben. Date: ______________ Learner‛s Hub 17 Quills and Thrills by Kelly Hashway Forests are homes to many animals. But there’s one forest creature that gives off an odour and makes a rattling sound when it feels threatened. No, it’s not a cross between a skunk and a rattlesnake. It’s a porcupine. Porcupines are covered with quills— about 30,000 on average. The quills cover most of the porcupine’s body with the exception of the face, stomach, and the inside of the animal’s legs. You probably know that rattle snakes shake their tails to scare off predators. It’s like a warning signal. Well, porcupines do something similar. When a porcupine is approached by a predator or is feeling threatened, it rustles its quills. This creates a rattling sound as a warning sign, telling other animals or even humans to back off. But the sound isn’t the only warning. When a porcupine raises its quills like this, it produces an odour. So the animal uses both sound and smell to ward off enemies. If a porcupine is attacked, its quills act as protection. You may have heard rumours that porcupines can shoot their quills at attackers. This isn’t true. What actually happens is when a 62 Super Teacher Worksheets - www.superteacherworksheets.com Gr. 3
Date: ______________ Learner’s Hub porcupine tenses the muscles around their quills and makes them stand up, the quills become loose. If an animal gets too close to the porcupine and brushes up against it, the quills will detach and stick into the attacker. The quills aren’t poisonous, but they have multiple layers of barbs like barbed wire, which makes them painful and sometimes difficult to remove because they embed themselves into the attacker’s skin. But the interesting thing about quills is that they are coated with antibiotic fatty acids that help speed up the healing process. Why? To protect the porcupine in case it accidentally pierces its own skin. A porcupine’s quills will grow back after losing them, but it does take several months. So if you ever find yourself in a forest, and you hear a rattling sound followed by a strange odour, beware. Finding yourself on the other end of a porcupine’s quills maybe more thrills than you’re looking for. Gr. 3 Super Teacher Worksheets - www.superteacherworksheets.com 63

That’s why Venus is called Earth’s “sister planet.” Scientists have been learning about Venus for a long time. First they looked at Venus through telescopes. Telescopes make things that are faraway look closer. But Venus is covered with thick clouds. The scientists could not see Venus through the clouds. So they made guesses about it. For a long time, scientists thought that Venus had water and plants. They thought Venus might have animals, too. But they could not know for sure. Then scientists found a way to learn more about Venus. In 1978, they began sending space probes to Venus. Probes are tools that are used to look at things. The probes flew through the thick clouds. They took pictures of Venus up close. They found out other things, too. The probes sent the pictures and things they found out back to the scientists. The scientists learned a lot from the probes. First they learned that most of their guesses were wrong. Nothing could ever live on Venus. Why not? Venus is much, much too hot. 66 Hi-Lo Passages to Build Comprehension: Grades 3-4 © Michael Priestley, Scholastic Teaching Resources Gr. 3

Can you help out?” “Um…” Jared knew he didn’t have time to help, but he didn’t want to disappoint Carlos. “I guess I can.” “Great. Thanks!” Carlos said, waving goodbye. Jared stepped onto the bus and took his seat. Being the first one there wouldn’t be a problem if the old oak tree that marked the bus stop wasn’t haunted. “Where is everyone?” Mark whispered. The sun wasn’t quite up yet, and the darkness was making the oak tree look scarier than usual. The tree was the gathering place for the bus stop. All the kids stood by it and talked while they waited for Mr. Meyers to drive up and take them to school. When other kids were around, the bus stop wasn’t so scary. But Mark was alone, and it was dark. The oak tree’s branches swayed in the breeze, and Mark heard the strange “Ooooh” that sometimes came from the center of the tree. Mark hurried to the other side of the street, trying to stay as far away from the tree as possible. He didn’t take his eyes off the tree. The bare branches looked like they were reaching out to grab him. He heard the “Ooooh, ooooh” again. “I’m not afraid of you,” Mark called in a shaky voice. “Who are you talking to?” Will asked, walking up behind Mark. 74 Super Teacher Worksheets - www.superteacherworksheets.com Gr. 3
