THE OWNER NEIL MORRIS Hello again and welcome to seaside ice hockey, Manchester Phoenix style. The boys did a fantastic job getting their first win of the season down in Bracknell, so it is carry on from there. There are so many things happening these days that it is difficult to keep up. The new rink is taking longer than we anticipated mainly due to the complexity of the planning regulations. I never expected to be still asking questions at this late hour. Things are moving and Manchester City Council have been great in guiding myself and my colleagues through the minefield. What I will say is this…… the rink is happening, we are moving to Manchester and it will be quicker than some think. That leaves us here in Fylde until the rink is ready. Dan and his staff here have been magnificent in their support and have passed a few tips on for us to use in the new building. The staff there have done everything they can to make us welcome and our fans enjoy the evening. You will notice another few changes this weekend including making the view from the middle tier much better. Tony is still working hard to bring in a couple of forwards and our advert this week has given him a few people to look at. I know couple of player became available this week but the circumstances here make it difficult to attract some players. However, after last Sunday’s disappointing result, the lads showed the travelling Phoenix fans just what they can do. I doubt if anyone expected a 5-0 away win. Hey, it has been a long rocky road this last 18 months but despite everything, we are still here, still fighting, still playing and the light at the end of the tunnel is from the new rink and not an oncoming train. It’s easy for me to say “keep the Faith” every week, but I would not be here tonight if it was not for the most loyal fans in the country. Enjoy the evening 6
THE COACH TONY HAND It was great to get our first win of the season down in Bracknell on Sunday night. Having missed Saturday’s loss in Fylde due to a family commitment, I was hoping for a turn around. The guys certainly did that and an all-round good performance showed just what we are capable of. Like you guys, I am concerned by our short bench but can assure you I am on the case as best I can. We cannot run this short all season that is for sure. On to this weekend and we will have played Telford away for the second time away and we are only 4 weeks into the season. It has been a difficult start for us but we gave them a good game in Telford and if a bit of luck had gone our way we could have brought something home. Tonight we welcome officials, players and fans of Swindon Wildcats to our temporary seaside home for their first visit. We have had another good practice week and are looking forward to reversing the result from Swindon a couple of weeks ago. Swindon will not make it easy for us as they have a very strong, fast, physical attack and we need to be tight in defence and take our chances when they come. Once again, I want to thank the tremendous support the fans gave us down in Bracknell on Sunday, truly amazing. Keep it up guys, it is making a difference. Enjoy the game. 7

HOCKEY ACROSS THE POND On Tuesday night Team Canada took first blood in the World Cup of Hockey final as they defeated surprise finalists Team Europe 3-1 in the best of three final at the Air Canada Centre. For Canada it was their fifth successive win in the tournament and one more would seal the inaugural World Cup of Hockey Championship. After the win, Captain Sidney Crosby wasn’t impressed with the performance but happy with the win, saying “ I think we can be better , but ultimately we found a way to win; that’s important. We just want to make sure we give ourselves a chance by the way we play. I think we felt like we turned it over a little bit too much and lost some battles.” Canada stormed to a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from Brad Marchand and a first of the tournament for Tampa’s Steven Stamkos, before Europe’s Thomas Tatar cut the deficit to one with a goal in the second period, his third in five games. Boston Bruins’ forward Patrice th Bergeron sealed the win with a goal in the 9 minute of the third period. Europe have shocked the hockey world by making it this far and can take a lot of positives from a game one in which they matched the Canadians for the most part. To turn this tie around Europe will need to find scoring from sources other than Thomas Tatar, with their star man Anze Kopitar failing to find the net in the first 5 games. Join us next week when we will be finding out if the Trophy will be staying in Canada or coming over to Europe! 26

MATCH NIGHT REPORT Basic hat trick sinks Phoenix BRACKNELL BEES - 7 MANCHESTER PHOENIX - 2 The Bracknell Bees came away from the Fylde Coast Ice Arena with a 7-2 win on Saturday night; a result which didn’t reflect the overall course of the game. Following a quiet opening, Bracknell broke the deadlock when Rio Grinell-Parke tapped in unmarked at 10:02. Exactly a minute later, Bracknell doubled their lead as a Phoenix giveaway allowed Josh Tetlow to fire into the top corner. The second period was completely dominated by Phoenix, and the deficit was halved when Marek Indra burst through centre ice and fired under Matthew Smital at 25:17. Phoenix registered 23 shots in the period and were unlucky not to find an equaliser as a combination of Smital and resolute defending kept the score at 2-1. Two shorthanded goals put Bracknell back in control as Luka Basic finished one-on- one at 31:23 and then fired an unstoppable shot past Fone at 38:55. In the final period, Basic went onto complete his hat trick at 46:14 before Scott Spearing made it 6-1 at 51:15. Phoenix did manage to get a second goal when Luke Boothroyd found Robin Kovar in space and he lifted the puck over Smital at 51:45. Phoenix were unlucky to add to the score as Indra was denied and Kovar hit the post, before Krystof Kafan ended the scoring at 58:15. Phoenix are at home next Sunday evening against the Swindon Wildcats, with a 5pm face-off in Blackpool.
MATCH NIGHT REPORT Phoenix rampant in Bracknell MANCHESTER PHOENIX - 5 BRACKNELL BEES - 0 The Manchester Phoenix recorded their first win of the season in a dominant 5-0 win away to the Bracknell Bees on Sunday night. Three first period goals proved decisive as Steve Fone stopped 24 shots to claim his first shutout of the season. Robin Kovar got the scoring underway as he converted a cross-ice centre from Edgars Bebris at 10:57. The second arrived shortly after on the powerplay as Marek Indra set up Bebris at 12:07. Bracknell’s frustrations boiled over as player/coach Lukas Smital was ejected following a crosschecking call, and Phoenix took advantage as Kovar slammed in his second from a Joni Tuominen pass at 14:24. Bracknell created chances in the second as Krystof Kafan fired wide when well placed in a period littered with penalties and plenty of whistles. Kovar was denied a hat trick by the bar before Roman Malinik stuffed home his fourth of the season at 38:44. Fone continued to frustrate the Bees in the final period as the unlucky Kafan was denied one-on-one before Phoenix bizarrely received two penalties for too many imports in quick succession, which were safely killed off. Alex Barker thought he’d grabbed a consolation late on but was robbed by Fone, and shortly after, Indra raced up the left wing and set up Jakub Langhammer to rifle home his first in a Phoenix shirt at 58:44. Phoenix are at home next Sunday evening against the Swindon Wildcats, with a 5pm face-off in Blackpool. 31

CHOIRBOYS CORNER This past week whilst half the choirboys made the trip to Fylde, myself and a few of the others thought we would try out our partners in Manchester, Shooters Bar in Manchester. We made it to the bar about half hour before face-off and the place was already full with Phoenix fans. We took our seats and with some trepidation got ready for the evening’s entertainment. To say it was a perfect night would be an exaggeration. First off the scoreline and performance was disappointing at best. That young Bracknell team really came to play and quite frankly embarrassed us. Secondly the first period had no sound and the second period started without picture. However once they got the kinks ironed out the picture and sound quality was actually rather good! We really got to feel the atmosphere and a few chants even started to ring around Shooters bar. Also they serve beer! After watching the first two games of the season at a rink without a license this was most enjoyable. To finish the night on a high we hit a couple of more Manchester bars before heading back to “Chief’s” to sample some Crystal Head vodka! Beautiful but lethal!! So the result wasn’t quite what we wanted and there were a few slight technical issues but overall I would definitely recommend trying out Shooters Bar which is why I’m back there tonight, probably enjoying a cold beer and hot pizza while you read this. Over the past week the choirboys begun their first NHL Fantasy League and the draft took place last Monday. Now I’m not going to get too cocky just yet, but with Kane, Gaudreau, Forsberg, Burns Doughty and plenty more on my team I fancy my chances! As the season progresses I’ll keep you up to date. Sadly this process has become rather time consuming process as I’ve had to watch Mikey try and draft the entire Pittsburgh Penguins roster! Anyway on to today’s game. After picking up our first win of the season last week it’s time to pick up our first home win of the season tonight against the Cats. Remember to sing loud, sing proud and whether you are with me in Shooters or up in Fylde keep supporting your Manchester Phoenix. Until next time this is Martin of the Choirboys signing off! 35
