THE OWNER NEIL MORRISWelcome to this evening’s game against the Bracknell Bees. I always enjoy double-headerweekends as they seem to bring out the best in both teams!I wanted to start by thanking our amazing fans for their help, support and understanding inwhat’s been a difficult start to the season. I think most people can see that the team is startingto come together and that we’ve begun to get on top of the teething issues of movingtemporarily to Blackpool. There’s also been a huge amount going on off the ice that I want toupdate you all on.Firstly, you will have noticed the improved stairs, increased seating capacity and new standingarea at last weekend’s games. Lots of people, who shall remain nameless, have put incountless hours to increase the capacity of the rink in Blackpool, and I’m sure everyone canagree that it made a huge improvement to the feeling around the rink during the MK game.It was great that we were able to accommodate a few fans from Milton Keynes and we’rehoping that even more away fans will be able to attend our games in the next few weeks.Whilst we’re on the rink, we’ve received an unbelievable amount of support from the ownerand staff of the Fylde Coast Ice Arena, and they’ve gone to considerable lengths to help matchnights run as smoothly as possible. I’m certain that there’s a long-term future for ice hockeyin Blackpool and it would be great to see a permanent team in the rink.I also want to pay tribute to our long-term sponsors who have stuck with the club during difficulttimes, particularly J Davidson and Millington’s, and they’ve been associated with the club forten years now. Without their support, this club would not exist, and I know they’re as excitedas you are about our return to Manchester. Finally, I wanted to reassure you that the club is working extremely hard to deliver a winningteam on the ice, and Tony is still actively searching for players who he feels will strengthenour team.Enjoy the game. 6
THE COACH TONY HANDLast weekend saw us with two tough games again. In four games we have played the twofavourites for the league, in Telford and Milton Keynes, and Hull who have made a great startto the season. Lots of positives to take from the games against Swindon and MK and I thoughtthe guys gave it everything on Sunday against Lightning. We are starting to gel as a team andthe boys are getting used to each other. This week we will get down to some tough practiceand team talks in order to get that first win under our belts. We have a double header against Bracknell this weekend and we need to take our chancesand come out with points. The Hive is a tough place to play but we have had some goodresults there recently and I am looking for our first win. On Sunday we welcome the staff, players and fans from Bracknell to our temporary home in Fylde but make no mistake, we arehunting points and as always are looking to you the fans to be our extra player. Last Sundaywas noisy and the players and I appreciated the support so keep it up and enjoy the game. 7

HOCKEY ACROSS THE PONDTeam Europe's Leon Draisatl celebrates scoring the game winner against the Czech Republic on Monday night. The World Cup of Hockey is officially underway! The pre tournament matchups served up a few shocksand it looks as though the actual tournament is going to be no different after favourites for last place,Team Europe, started the tournament with back to back wins first against the USA and then the CzechRepublic leaving them almost guaranteed a spot in the next round. Europe have netminder JaroslavHalak largely to thank for their teams surprise start to the tournament, with the Slovakian goalie turningaway 63 of 65 shots in his sides first two games and earning a shutout in the 3-0 against the US.Along with Team Europe, Team North America are the neutrals favourite and the young stars fromCanada and the US started brightly beating the Finns before narrowly being beaten by the Russianswho needed to win to stay alive in the competition. It’s only early stages in the tournament but so far itwill be Oilers fans who will be the happiest. Whilst seasoned veterans and Stanley Cup winners arestruggling to find form, Edmonton’s Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent Hopkins have both been in goodform for Canada whilst German Leon Draisatl scored the game winner for Europe against the CzechRepublic this past week. With all three men under 24 it shows the promise this young Oilers teampossess. Another man impressing is Calgary’s Johnny Gaudreau, and with the Flames improving theirsquad over the summer expect both Alberta sides to make a push for a Stanley cup place this season. The first of the elimination games takes place tonight with all the remaining teams competing until thereare only remaining when the final takes place next Saturday at midnight so make sure you pick keepreading Hockey Across the Pond as we look at how the World Cup of Hockey was won and lost andalso start looking forward to the start of the NHL season. 26
DID YOU KNOW - JAKUB LANGHAMMER1. How did you start playing hockey?I began playing when I was three years old, my parents encouraged me a lot,as I was playing soccer too, so they were kept busy!2. You went onto play junior hockey at a young age…I grew up in Kladno where lots of good hockey players have come from,as they have a good junior system.3. How did your move to the US come about?I was entered into the junior draft and was picked in the first round. I played forSpokane in the Western Hockey League for two years and really enjoyed it.It was hard at first as I was only 17, I was away from my parents and didn’t speak English, but I soon picked it up andended up buying a car so I had a bit of freedom!4. How does the US junior leagues differ? It’s very different to playing junior hockey in the Czech Republic! There’s lots more practice sessions, followed by gymsessions, and you spend all day at the rink. It’s a tough, physical league but with lots of good players, and I came upagainst some current NHL players.I also had my first fight in the US, and I woke up in the dressing room! After that, I probably had five or six fights, andwon about half of them.5. How did your game develop in the US?I was a centre, but had to concentrate on playing more defence. It helped me develop an all-round game, and improvemy passing skills.6. You then went back to the Czech Republic?I spent five or six years at Sparta Prague; they’re such a big club and I was so excited to play for them! We won twoCzech Extraliga titles, and it was awesome to be a part of that.In the first title season, I was only a fourth line player, but a year later, I was playing second line, so it was nice to playa greater role in winning the championship.Playing for Sparta Prague is the highlight of my career so far as not many players get to play for such a big club.7. You did go onto play for the national team though…Yes, I played a couple of tournament which was a great experience, I remember one year in Switzerland when we cameup against Germany, which was a good game.8. You’ve recently spent a couple of years in Germany…Yes, two seasons in Germany, and they have pretty good leagues with lots of North American players. I don’t speakGerman so it was quite hard at times but fortunately my wife does so that helped!9. How would you describe yourself as a hockey player?I think I’m an intelligent player and I like to move the puck quickly and create chances for my teammates.10. How did you end up signing for Phoenix? My agent said that Manchester was interested and I spoke to several other Czech players who told me it was a goodleague, and I wanted to experience something different. 27

MATCH NIGHT REPORT Quick-fire goals hand Swindon the points SWINDON WILDCATS - 5 MANCHESTER PHOENIX - 2Manchester Phoenix were unfortunate to come away from Wiltshire with a 5-2 defeat against theSwindon Wildcats on Saturday night.Phoenix started in the ascendancy and opened the scoring with their first shot as Edgars Bebris foundthe top corner at 1:51 following a pass up the middle from James Neil. However, a giveaway at theback allowed Tomasz Malasinski to equalise at 3:33. Robin Kovar had a backhanded effort saved butthe home side grew into the game as the period progressed and it was Max Birbraer who grabbed thenext goal at 15:09.The second period was a much more equal affair with Phoenix dominating the opening exchanges asKovar was denied on a breakaway and Roman Malinik missing an empty goal with a rebound minuteslater. The deserved equaliser arrived at 30:08 when Malinik went top shelf following a drop pass fromJoni Tuominen.Phoenix’s hard work was undone by two quick Swindon goals through Ben Davies on the powerplay at32:12 and Malasinski’s second at 33:28. Phoenix had chances to get back in the game, the best ofwhich saw Marek Indra hit the post as the period ended 4-2.Both sides had chances to get on the scoreboard in the final period – Kovar created a chance all forhimself after slaloming past three Swindon players whilst an almighty goalmouth scramble at the otherend almost saw Swindon force the puck in. As Phoenix pushed for a late goal, Swindon broke away asAaron Nell sneaked the puck past Fone at 59:43 to put a rather undeserved gloss on the score-line.Phoenix Coach Tony Hand commented: “I thought it was a close contest tonight, and with a little bit ofluck in front of goal, we might have taken something from the game. It’s obviously tough with a lack ofbodies at the moment but there were plenty of positives and it’s pleasing to see that we’re starting togel as a team.”
MATCH NIGHT REPORT Phoenix edged out by late goals in Telford TELFORD TIGERS - 4 MANCHESTER PHOENIX - 1Manchester Phoenix were unable to register their first win of the season as the Milton Keynes Lightningcame away from Fylde with a 3-1 win.The visitors got on the scoreboard early on as Mikolaj Lopuski fired past Steve Fone at 2:05, and Fonehad to be at his best in the opening stages of the period to prevent further damage. Phoenix cameback into the game, and a centring pass from Ben Wood came back off the crossbar as the home sidepressed for an equaliser. Late in the period however, Phoenix lost the puck on the boards allowing atwo-on-one opportunity which was converted by Lewis Hook.Phoenix regrouped and pulled a goal back just 15 seconds into the second period as Marek Indra setup Joni Tuominen to fire past the MK netminder from the point. The turning point of the game provedto be a controversial penalty after MK’s Frantisek Bakrlik was called for hooking, Phoenix’s Indra alsoreceived a penalty for diving. On the resulting 4-4 situation, Michael Farn set up Hook to bag his secondof the night. The final period saw few chances as MK’s organised defensive shape limited Phoenix to a few shotson goal, whilst MK were equally frustrated at the other end of the ice. Young defenceman Lewis Baldwinpicked up the man-of-the-match award for Phoenix following another assured display. 31
CHOIRBOYS CORNERHello all and welcome to Blackpool! An especially warm welcome to the devoted followers and staff ofthe Bracknell Bees who have made the trip up. Bracknell are probably the only other team who havesuffered as much as the Phoenix have over the last 12 months and it is an absolute pleasure to see aBracknell team still icing in the EPL. Hopefully the hard times are coming to the end for both sides andwe’ll be back at the right end of the league table in no time!Tonight we are greeting you from afar as a large number of our rowdy bunch have decided to try outShooters bar for the live stream, so apologies if it is a bit quieter in here than normal but I’m sure youlot can roar us on to victory without the help of the drums. We will still be cheering the boys on thougheven if we are in a different city and I’ll also be providing a review on how watching the live stream is innext weeks Choirboys’ Corner so make sure you download the programme next week if you areconsidering trying out the stream in the future. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday thanwith 2 pint Steins, Hotdogs and Hockey so I expect you’ll receive a glowing report. Many things have changed with the Phoenix over the last few years and the Choirboys are no different. We have therefore come to the conclusion that for a new barn we need a new Choirboys’ banner. I willbe giving you all more information shortly but if there any Phoenix fans out there that fancy themselvesas a bit of a designer, then send me your ideas for our new banner and who knows you could see yourcreation hung proudly above the Choirboys at every home game. If you are on twitter send me yourideas to @pnxchoirboys and I’ll print the best in the upcoming programmes. Time for a new Choirboys banner?Remember to be loud and proud. Whether you are joining us in Shooters or are watching the game livefrom the Fylde Ice Arena lets get behind the boys and cheer them on to their first home win of theseason.Until next time this is Martin of the Choirboys signing off! 35
