THE OWNER NEIL MORRIS The question I am obviously asked by everyone weekly is “When is the building in Manchester opening and why is it taking so long?”. Well firstly I don’t think any of the team and I realised the amount of work that would have to be done in the background to get planning permission for an Ice Arena to be put on an old disused warehouse facility. I mean don’t get me wrong we knew it was going to be a lot of work and costly but we never anticipated the vast amount of work that would be needed and the amount of professional reports that would be needed to support our submission. It has been intensified by the amount of public attention the project has attracted, with a lot of people outside of our organisation trying to ensure that the new project does not break any current legislation. It has been a long process to ensure that The Ice Dome has been properly assessed to meet the new obligations and regulations set out by the local authority. I would like to thank Ice Tech UK who have worked tirelessly in the background to ensure that we meet all the obligations placed upon us to achieve the goal of Opening The Ice Dome here back in Manchester. The license to occupy has helped us to do a lot of preparation work. We now believe that all the reports required along the way have been completed and that the council are now going through the documents in detail. We are hoping for a positive result shortly from them, then we will then start work on the project and try and execute it as quickly as possible so we may return back home to Manchester where we all rightly belong. In the meantime, we have tried to make the Fylde Ice Arena our home and stream the games weekly back to Manchester. I would like to thank Dan and his team over in Blackpool for trying so hard to accommodate us helping to keep The Phoenix Alive. I don’t think we could have found a nicer bunch of people to share, what has been for me, one of the most difficult journeys I have undertook. I would like to thank all of you for being patient, I know it has been difficult for you as well as Tony and I. I know a lot of people outside of the club have an opinion about what we are doing and not doing, imagine what they could achieve if they put that focus and effort into their own projects and lives. Just so you know I have tried so hard since we left SilverBlades to relocate The Whole Phoenix organisation back into Manchester. It has been much, much harder than I ever anticipated and I am sorry, if at times, I don’t meet everybody’s expectations, I have learnt I will never be able to do that. I can only do what my dad taught me to do, while I have my health, I am to get up and work hard every day and try my hardest. I believe with a little more patience and the belief that the faithful from Manchester generates we will be home soon. I will always try and keep my word and never give in if you don’t. Serva Fidem. 6
THE COACH TONY HAND Hi, folks. Despite a blank weekend last time out, I thought we were really starting to gel. It is always tough at Telford but I think we shook them a bit and with some luck could have gone in at the second break with a lead. Unfortunately, we tired in the third and two late goals settled the game. Against Swindon, we lost goals at important times and, although we competed all night, Swindon were worth their win. We are getting it right though and if we can get a couple of players in, especially while Ben is out, we will see a turn around. Huge appreciation to Neil Morris and his team of handymen for making more improvements to the rink. The change from the first week has been amazing, well done to all. By Sunday’s game, we will have played our first derby game against Sheffield Steeldogs. Our Brit lads always want to win this one just as much as you fans do. Rest assured we will do our very best to bring home the points. Sunday will see the visit of the officials, players and fans of Guildford Flames. They have had a sticky start but a couple of changes in their roster brought them a 4-point weekend last time out. They will come to our rink confident, but we are close to that first home win so why not Sunday? Enjoy the game. 7

HOCKEY ACROSS THE POND Team Canada are the World Cup of Hockey Champions! The pre tournament favourites completed their 100% record by defeating Team Europe 2-1 to take the best of 3 series 2-0 and be crowned the inaugural Champions. The Canadian captain Sidney Crosby was named player of the tournament following the win with figures of 3 goals and 7 assists in 7 games. This caps an excellent year for the Pittsburgh captain who also lifted the Stanley Cup trophy with the Penguins in 2016. After the victory coach Mike Babcock was full of praise for Crosby. “[Crosby] does it right,' Babcock said. 'He works hard. He doesn't complain. If he gets 15 minutes, he doesn't say a word. If he gets 20 minutes, he doesn't say a word. If he misses three shifts in a row, he doesn't say a word. If the penalty kill is out there and he's not playing -- whatever he's gotta do -- and then in the biggest moments he turns it up.” 'When you look at guys like him and Bergeron and obviously Jonathan Toews, in the biggest moments, they're better. They can't help themselves. They're addicted to winning and they just make it happen.' Crosby becomes only the third player in history to win the Hart Trophy, the Conn Smythe Trophy and the MVP at the Canada Cup or World Cup of Hockey, the other two being hall of famers Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky. Crosby and Team Canada didn’t have it all their own way in the final however and had to come from behind in game two against Europe. Veteran defender Zdeno Chara put Team Europe into the lead in the first period, a lead which they held until three minutes to go in the game when Patrice Bergeron tied up the game on the power play at 57:07. The goal seemed to deflate Europe and it was a special team goal that decided the game with Brad Marchand scoring his fourth of the tournament short handed with only 44 seconds to go and clinching the trophy for Canada, who further cemented their position as the dominant force in hockey. Now with the national team dominant the Canadian public will be hoping for an improved season for their local teams after all 7 Canadian teams failed to make the playoffs last season. Next week we will be looking at those Canadian teams and see what the 2016-17 season will bring for them. 27
DID YOU KNOW - Roman Mailinik 1. How did you get into hockey? I started playing when I was only three, my Dad decided from a very young age that I had to play hockey! 2. Did you always want to play hockey? Yes of course – what else could I do?! Hockey is a wonderful sport and it’s given me a good career. 3. When did you start playing junior hockey? My first season was when I was 16, playing for HC Vitkovice at U18 level. I really enjoyed playing for the club and spent all of my youth hockey with them. The club has an amazing tradition and history in Czech ice hockey so I had some really good times there. 4. You then moved to Canada and spent two seasons playing for Baie-Comeau Drakkar… It was a little bit different to living and playing in the Czech Republic! People in Canada are crazy about their hockey, and in some places there is nothing else to do! The quality of hockey was very high but there’s a lot more physical play. Baie-Comeau is a small city but the people were really nice and treated me well, so I have a lot of good memories. 5. The league is full of good players – who were the best you played against? I was lucky to come up against some very good players who have gone onto play in the NHL, including Jakub Voracek, Brad Marchand and Michael Frolik, so it was a good test. The set up in North America is very professional, which is why the league produces so many NHL players. 6. You had 30 points in your second season, not a bad return? I played ok and I could have had more points but it was a great experience. 7. You then played several seasons in Czech 2. What was your favourite team and what was your best achievement? I played for three teams and there were good things at each of them. I guess playing for Dukla Jihlava was the most successful period of my hockey career – I was there for five seasons and we had some success. I was also lucky enough to meet my wife there! 8. How did you find out about Manchester Phoenix? My agent asked me whether I wanted to play in England, and after giving it some thought, it was something which really appealed to me. Luckily enough, Phoenix came in for me, and its great playing with three other Czech players. 9. Did you know any of the other Czech players at Phoenix? Yes, I played against Robin when I was younger at Jihlava and he played in Usti. Jakub Langhammer was a well-known player as he was at Sparta Prague, and I then played with Marek at Jihlava. 10. Are you enjoying playing for Phoenix? What do you think of the standard of hockey in the league? Yes, I was pleasantly surprised by the standard of hockey, as I’d heard mixed rumours before arriving. The league is very strong and I’m enjoying testing myself. Playing for Phoenix is great – I’m getting a lot of ice time at the moment! But I know we’ll get stronger as the season goes on. 28

MATCH NIGHT REPORT Short-benched Phoenix fall just short in Telford TELFORD TIGERS - 4 MANCHESTER PHOENIX - 2 Phoenix old-boy Michal Satek proved the difference with a hat trick as the Telford Tigers claimed a 4-2 win on Saturday night. Telford, with the luxury of icing seven more players than Phoenix, unsurprisingly dominated large portions of the play and broke the deadlock through Matthew Davies at 8:56. The lead was quickly doubled as Satek converted a pass from Davies at 12:44. Phoenix struck back late in the period however as Marek Indra set up Edgars Bebris at 16:19, and following a penalty to Greg Pick, Joni Tuominen set Roman Malinik away shorthanded and he levelled matters at 19:06. The second period continued in a similar vein but without any further additions to the scoreboard as Stephen Fone stopped 16 shots and Telford were also denied by the post. The decisive goal arrived at 43:39 with Satek’s second of the night, and as the Phoenix players began to tire, Satek converted his hat trick late on at 58:08. photo taken by Steve Brodie 31
MATCH NIGHT REPORT Missed chances cost Phoenix MANCHESTER PHOENIX - 1 SWINDON WILDCATS - 5 Manchester Phoenix fell to a 5-1 home defeat to the Swindon Wildcats on Sunday night, and were left to rue a host of missed chances throughout the game. Swindon got on the scoreboard early on as Toms Rutkis pounced on a loose puck to fire home at 4:18. It was the visitors who dominated the opening period as Steve Fone faced 18 shots, however it was Phoenix who should have levelled on the powerplay as Robin Kovar set up Marek Indra but his shot went under Stevie Lyle and came back off the post. Phoenix were punished as a perfectly set up two-on-one saw Jonas Hoog find Aaron Nell at 18:11 to make it 2-0. Swindon’s lead was soon extended as Fone kept out Tomasz Malasinski only for Jan Kostal to tap into an empty net at 20:56. The second period was completely dominated by Phoenix who registered 19 shots and finally got their reward as Jakub Langhammer found the top corner on the powerplay. Phoenix continued to create chances and both Kovar and Indra were denied from close in, but Swindon grabbed the killer goal as Rutkis pounced on a rebound to grab his second of the night at 36:22. The final period saw Phoenix’s short bench begin to tire as chances were at a premium however there was still time for Kostal to bag his second of the night at 50:32 with a well-taken goal. Phoenix are at home next Sunday evening against the Guildford Flames, with a 5pm face-off in Blackpool. 32

CHOIRBOYS CORNER Good evening everybody, whether you are watching the game in Fylde or in Shooters or if you are streaming from home, welcome back. This week I would like to start by saying a massive well done to my good friends Anna and Jake who raised an incredible £300 on their Macmillan cake morning. I know this is a charity close to Anna’s heart and I’m really proud of what she achieved. Ok, back to hockey and that first home win still eludes us. Last week we came up against a very well organised Swindon team who hit us on the counter attack with pace and made us pay for every turnover. Not the best day at the office, but there were some positives and that first home win in Blackpool can’t be too far away. Perhaps tonight?! We decided to stay at home to watch the game last Sunday. Beer Pizza and NHL 17 in the period breaks plus watching Phoenix in the comfort of our own home (whilst trying to keep up to date with the Ryder Cup on my SkyGo) made for a rather entertaining night and while the result didn’t go our way, it was great being able to watch Phoenix in your own living room. Something I would definitely recommend. Last night the Choirboys embarked on our first road trip of the season, to the home of our local rivals Sheffield. Seasons without War of the Roses just don’t feel the same , so it will be nice to make the trip over the Pennines for the first time this season. I always enjoy the trips to Sheffield. Probably the best rink in the league, and you lot are always extra noisy over there. I know some of you will be reading this article before Saturday’s match so if you are unsure of whether to make the trip or not please come along and cheer on the boys. Let Sheffield know that Phoenix hockey is very much alive! Finally – A new Choirbaby is going to be added to the ranks!! Last week Paul and Caroline Gaskell announced they were expecting a baby – although it is due a week after Playoff weekend, not the best planning guys! Please join me in wishing them both a massive congratulations. The future of the Choirboys is in safe hands!! Next week we will have a special guest writer for the Choirboys Corner. Hannah Sinclair already has on her CV that she writes for us so we may as well get some work out of her! Until next time this is Martin of the Choirboys signing off! 36
