THE OWNER NEIL MORRIS Good evening everybody, A bit of a feedback sandwich for you tonight. You know the one, good news, bad news and always finish on good news. My dad always taught me never to end on a negative as it lasts all week. So here goes. What a fantastic atmosphere at the seaside last Sunday as we finally got the monkey off our back, winning our first home game. The lads worked so hard to keep on top of a plucky Bees side. The victory wave had been left in the locker room far too long and it was great to see the new boys take to the spirit of the wave. On to Wednesday’s game in Hull. Tony and I have always had great pride in the levels of performance and entertainment of Phoenix teams. Well, I am sorry to say we fell short of both at Hull. We had a good turn out of the faithful and the performance and result was disappointing. I know Tony will have worked hard in training to sort out the problems and we have a chance to put it right when we face the same opposition tonight. I won’t dwell on this as the squad have performed miracles this season when desperately short benched and I am sure they, themselves will want to rectify the situation. As I said at the top of the page, finish off on good news. Those who were at Hull saw young Lewis Baldwin get his first goal in Phoenix colours and believe me it was a highlight goal. Unfortunately his dad was talking at the time and missed it. I hope Hull TV has it on their game highlights as it definitely is one to remember. Off ice, nothing more to tell you at the moment other than I expect something from the council very soon and we can get on with building our rink. Enjoy the game tonight folks 6
THE COACH TONY HAND Good evening again from sunny Blackpool. Well, not so sunny now. We had mixed fortunes last week, starting with a defeat at high-flying Milton Keynes Lightning. They are steadily preparing for the Elite League next season and will want to leave with the league title. We matched them early on and even took a 2-goal lead rd but their deeper bench and quality of their 3 and 4 lines told in the end. th Sunday was a must win game for us to keep in touch with the play off pack. Bracknell are in similar financial circumstances to us and came to Blackpool after beating us here last time out. Eddie Bebris and Robin Kovar found their top form and we ran out good winners in the end. We had an extra game this week with our first trip to Hull. I thought we went with a bit of momentum after the Bracknell win but a combination of bad errors and a Hull side who are slick and fast on the break, we did not do ourselves justice and lost the game. We have a good chance to put things right tonight as we welcome the players, staff and fans of the Hull Pirates for their second visit of the season. It’s a long season and we have 40 games still to play so any talk of not making the playoffs is not valid at the moment. We have a talented group of players and maybe with a couple of changes we will have it right, come March. As always, be loud and proud for your Manchester Phoenix. 7

CLUB NEWS Birthday announcements...... We would like to send best wishes to Phil Newton and Scott Taylor who will be celebrating their birthday this coming week, hope you both have a good one Player of the Month Don’t forget tonight is the last opportunity for you to vote for your October Player of the Month. The draw will be made at the end of the first period break and you may be the lucky person selected to present the award on ice the following week. 200 Club The draw for October will be made tonight so make sure you listen to the announcements as you may be one of four lucky winners with a top prize of £100.00. Well an eventful journey last weekend took the team bus via the Woodhead Pass after the M6 was gridlocked due to a burning lorry closing two lanes of the motorway. This meant that the team had to forego their normal football kick about as they only had time to get changed and straight on to the ice for warm up. The lads started well and Roman Malinik scored the opening goal against our opponents the Milton Keynes Lightning. Nic Matthews was the lucky recipient of the £15.00 prize money. Thank you Nic and good luck to all for next time. Sally Sunman was the winner of last weeks hockey card when she correctly chose the Guildford Flames. Sally pictured with her £30.00 winnings is one of our many regular contributors. Congratulations and thank you to all who took part.

HULL PIRATES KNOW YOUR ENEMY PHOENIX LIVE 5Stars: HULL PIRATES #49 Ryan Watt Following a league title with the Bison last season, Ryan Watt’s return closer to his Scottish roots has proved to be a beneficial one so far. His penalty minutes may be averaging close to five per game, but he continues to contribute in the points column too. #57 Jaroslav Sarsok At 6’6” and well over 200lbs, Jaroslav Sarsok brings a presence to the Pirates blueline that many felt was lacking last season. With a brief stint in the KHL as well as spells in Romania, Sweden and most recently Poland, Sarsok already looks an astute signing by Hull. #74 Lee Bonner The arrival of the Pirates into the EPL last season provided Lee Bonner with the chance to once again represent his home town team, and the diminutive forward did not disappoint. Another fast start means he is almost certain to represent GB u-20s again this season. #56 Lee Haywood After being involved with the Sheffield EPL setup for almost a decade, Lee Haywood swapped South Yorkshire for East Yorkshire this summer with a move to the Pirates. Haywood provides a steady and dependable presence on the blue line, and his early points production reflects Hull’s good start to the campaign. #17 Jason Hewitt After initially retiring, the lure of a return to the ice proved too much for Jason Hewitt who swapped the orange of the Steelers for the green of the Pirates. The beard may now have gone, but the raw talent which saw Hewitt ice for the Phoenix as a 20-year old back in 2003 very much remains. 24

HOCKEY ACROSS THE POND This week in the National Hockey League Sidney Crosby made his long-awaited return to action as the Pittsburgh Penguins faced the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night. The Pittsburgh and Canada captain missed the start of the season due to a concussion but made an instant impact on his return, scoring in a 3-2 victory against the Panthers. Facing off against the Pens on Tuesday night was former Pittsburgh legend Jaromir Jagr. Jagr is playing in his 26th season in the NHL, the Czech native is currently third on the alltime goal scoring list, 52 off the late, great Gordie Howe’s tally. Upon returning to Pittsburgh, Jagr was presented with a th commemorative plaque to celebrate Pittsburgh’s 50 anniversary season. Jagr was given a piece of the roof of the old Civic Arena, a.k.a. 'The Igloo.' The iconic domed building that was home to three Stanley Cup Champion Penguins teams and the site of the cult classic movie Sudden Death which was demolished in 2012. It was in that building where Jagr plied his trade for 11 seasons, building himself a Hall of Fame career with 1,079 points in 806 games with the Penguins. He sits behind only Mario Lemieux in most major offensive categories in the franchise's record books. In Montreal, the Canadians have started the season in similar vein to last year, picking up 5 wins out of their first 6 games. Last year the ‘habs won their first 9 games of the year but the wheels fell off when netminder Carey Price picked up injury. Significantly the Canadians have learnt how to pick up a win without the side-lined Price and are beginning to look like real candidates for Lord Stanley’s Cup. Elsewhere in the East, the Tampa Bay Lightning have started their challenge for the Cup in fine form, also picking up 5 wins in their first 6 games. As usual for Tampa this is largely thanks to captain Steven Stamkos who has 9 points in his opening 6 games including 5 goals. In the West, most teams are having an inconsistent start to the season with only the Edmonton Oilers impressing over the early stages. The Oilers are 5-0-1 in their first six games, largely thanks to their newly appointed captain Connor McDavid who has 9 points in his first 6 games of the season. McDavid’s impressive start to the season has been overshadowed by the class of 2016 with number one pick Auston Matthews and number 2 pick Patrik Laine taking the league by storm. Matthews made history in his NHL debut scoring 4 goals and leads the league in goals and points, with 6 goals and 4 assists in his first 6 NHL games. Laine isn’t too far behind Matthews with a point a game in his first six. Neither of the rookies’ forms are helping their clubs however as both Winnipeg (Laine) and Toronto (Matthews) have had disappointing starts to the season. The Leafs have only 1 win and the Jets 2 out of their first 6 games, and both clubs need support for their young stars if they have any chance of making a push for a playoff spot. In between the pipes it is surprise names that lead the way, with Detroit’s Jimmy Howard leading the way in save percentage and goals against and Edmonton’s Cam Talbot leading the league in wins. Talbot has spent most of his career playing backup to Hendrik Lundqvist in New York, but the 29- year-old is flourishing in Edmonton so far as their number 1. 26

MATCH NIGHT REPORT Key Decisions Hand MK the points Milton Keynes Lightning - 6 MANCHESTER PHOENIX - 2 Manchester Phoenix were missing Joni Tuominen as they travelled to the Milton Keynes Lightning on Saturday night. Phoenix started strongly and scored with their first shot as Marek Indra set up Roman Malinik who fired under the MK netminder at 1:07, although the goal was given to Indra. The lead was soon doubled as a Ben Wood shot from the blue line was tipped in by Robin Kovar at 4:14, shortly after Blaz Emersic had fired wide at the other end. Phoenix had chances to extend their advantage as Malinik broke away but his backhand effort was well saved and Gareth O’Flaherty was denied from close in. MK grew into the game as the period progressed, and Steve Fone made some big saves including a couple of goalmouth scrambles as the period ended 2-0. The second period was dominated by the home side as the referee called a series of controversial penalties against Phoenix, inexplicably missing infractions from the home team. Tom Carlon tapped in at the back post on the powerplay at 20:50, before Leigh Jamieson had a goal ruled out for man in the crease. Former Phoenix man Frantisek Bakrlik equalised at 33:27 after he burst through the defence, before Jordan Cownie scored with a delayed penalty goal at 35:31. Another powerplay goal from Lewis Hook at 39:22 made it 4-2 to the home side. MK extended their lead further in the final period thanks to another penalty awarded against Phoenix, as Bobby Chamberlain scored with a delayed penalty goal. Phoenix did create further opportunities as the period wore on but MK held firm before the home side’s Sam Jones provoked Michael Stratford into a fight, which was promptly won by the new Phoenix forward. MK added a late sixth goal through Blaz Emersic at 58:49. Phoenix are at home on Sunday evening against the Bracknell Bees, with a 5pm face-off in Blackpool 30
MATCH NIGHT REPORT Bebris shines in Phoenix rout MANCHESTER PHOENIX - 8 Bracknell Bees - 5 The Manchester Phoenix claimed their first home win of the season with a sensational 8- 5 win over the Bracknell Bees. In an end-to-end game with chances galore, Edgars Bebris thought he’d opened the scoring for Phoenix but his shot was tipped onto the bar and landed on the line. A spell of Bracknell pressure kept Steve Fone busy at the other end, but it was Phoenix who broke the deadlock as Bebris set up James Neil who stylishly slotted past Matt Smital at 13:11 for his second goal of the season. The lead was doubled shortly afterwards as a superb cross ice pass from Robin Kovar set up Bebris to score at 15:47 short-handed. The two goal advantage didn’t last long as Carl Thompson scored from the slot at 16:33 but this didn’t deter Phoenix who scored again at 17:12 as a pass from Kovar hit Bebris’s skate, then a Bracknell defenceman and went in, with the period ending 3-1. The second period began with Smital making a good glove save from Kovar before Thompson was again in the right place to bury a rebound at 23:34 for Bracknell. The action continued all over the ice as a hit on Marek Indra on the boards saw the plexi glass shatter, with the game delayed for almost an hour. When the game finally restarted, it was Phoenix who took full advantage. Firstly, Bebris broke clear and slipped the puck under Smital for his hat trick at 26:57, before an excellent Michael Stratford pass released Kovar, who calmly slotted home at 29:05. Then on Phoenix’s only powerplay of the night, Indra blasted in from the blue line at 33:42 to make it 6-2. Bracknell were continuing to create chances and got a late goal from Alex Barker, who found the top corner at 38:28. The comeback was on for the visitors in the third period as a Luke Basic tip at 44:45 followed by a goal from Josh Smith at 49:35 made it 6-5. In amongst all the goalmouth action, replacement netminder Alex Mettam denied Bebris with an excellent save but he could do nothing to keep out a Roman Malinik blast at 51:28 with another assist for Kovar. The scoring was completed at 58:59 as Bebris chased down a loose puck to score an empty net goal. There were a number of standout players for Phoenix including Malinik with five points and Kovar with four, but Bebris deservedly collected the man-of-the-match award with four goals and two assists. Phoenix are at home next Sunday evening against the Hull Pirates, with a 5pm face-off in Blackpool. 31
CHOIRBOYS CORNER Happy Halloween! Any one that has ever been to the end of season playoffs in Coventry will know that the Choirboys love fancy dress, whether it be dressed as Oompah Loompahs or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles we love an excuse to get the fancy dress out, and what better excuse than Halloween?! On Friday night Yvonne and I hosted our very own Zombie Halloween party so we’ll be sure to share the best costumes in next week’s programme. If any of our readers are dressing up for Halloween send me pictures of your most ghoulish costumes on twitter to @pnxchoirboys and I’ll share the best with you all. Back to the hockey and it was great to get that huge monkey off our back last week. After weeks of trying it was great to finally get a home win under our belt in Blackpool. This club has some of the most dedicated players, fans, sponsors and shareholders and I hope you all enjoyed last Sunday’s win as much as I did. No doubt who the man of the match was either. Eddie Bebris picked up 4 goals and 2 assists. After watching him do that season after season for Sheffield and Peterborough against us, it was nice to be on the right side of a Bebris demolition job. Remember to join in with the Choirboys when we sing his name tonight! “Bebris’ on fire, your defence is terrified. Bebris’ on fire, your defence is terrified…” It was great to hear some positive news regarding our new rink from the boss last Sunday. Would be so nice to start the new year in a new barn. Let’s get back to Manchester and get our Championship banners and our retired jerseys raised from the rafters. We are behind you 100% Neil let’s make it home! Onto this weekend’s opponents, the Hull Pirates, it will be a good test to see how far we’ve come. We played the Pirates first game of the season and to say we were unprepared is an understatement. No pre-season and a very small bench saw a rather disappointing result last time Hull travelled to the West Coast. Hopefully the lads will be full of confidence after last weekend’s win, and I’m sure Flats will be wanting to remind the Pirates of what they’re missing. I’m predicting a shock Phoenix win with a goal or two for Flats in the process. Whatever the result I know you guys will be as loud as ever supporting your Manchester Phoenix.
