THE OWNER NEIL MORRIS Well, it certainly hasn’t been a quiet or easy week here in the Phoenix camp! I had my meetings with Manchester City Council, and had to make some incredibly difficult decisions about the future of the club. Firstly, let me say that none of the decisions that were made were taken lightly. We weighed up every possible option before making the final call. The clubs financial position has been very difficult ever since it became clear that we would miss the November deadline for returning to Manchester. It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made in my business life to release the imports, but ultimately I had to do what gave the club the best chance of surviving and going forwards. I know this hasn’t been the most popular of decisions, but it is one that made sense from a business perspective. And secondly, we are now the guests of Silver Blades Widnes. I want to thank Silver Blades for allowing us to use this fine facility. I know many of you never expected to see Silver Blades and the Phoenix work together ever again, but business does throw you some curve balls, and this is one of them. Everything that happened in the past is just that: the past. I would like to take this opportunity also to thank Dan and the staff at Fylde Coast Ice Arena. Without their support, we simply wouldn’t be here today. And finally, allow me to invite you to our open meeting on Thursday at the Bierkeller. Myself and Tony will be there to answer your questions and explain where the club will go, looking to the future. You truly are the best fans in the world. Serva Fidem. And always Serva Fidem… 6
THE COACH TONY HAND It’s never easy letting players go. Releasing Robin, Joni, and Vaclav was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I’m helping them as much as I can to find new spots before the signing deadline, and I sincerely wish them the best for their future careers. I would also like to thank them and Edgars Bebris for their contributions this season on the ice. Without them, our season would have been even more of a struggle, and for that I am truly grateful. Going forwards, I will be working with an all British team. This is the only way we can fulfil our fixtures, and it give me a chance to assess some young players from the NIHL. In many ways, this is an exciting opportunity for both myself and the players in question, as we can work towards the future of the Phoenix and its players. I would like to thank the Widnes Wild for allowing their players to ice for us when they are available. It is my ambition to help develop young British players into some of the finest we have, and to help push their playing careers far beyond the game in this country. I see this as being one of the first steps towards realising that, and I hope that you do too. I won’t lie, it will be tough on the ice, but I firmly believe that this is the way forwards for the club as we look to secure its future. 7

PETERBOROUGH PHANTOMS KNOW YOUR ENEMY PHOENIX LIVE 5 Stars: PETERBOROUGH PHANTOMS #40 Petr Stepanek The signing of Petr Stepanek, from the Czech lower leagues via a brief spell in Australia, did not garner too much attention over the summer. Fast forward six months and the towering forward has established himself as one of the league’s most powerful imports. #16 Marc Levers Having this season surpassed the 200 game mark for the Phantoms, there is no sign of the evergreen Marc Levers slowing down. A winner of multiple trophies during his long spell in Nottingham with the Panthers, he provides dependability, versatility and leadership on what is a Peterborough side with youth at its core. #2 Tom Norton Another of the Peterborough contingent with strong links to the Nottingham system, Tom Norton has fully established himself as one of the top British defencemen in the EPL (so much so that Phantoms fans have forgiven him for his season with Milton Keynes). #28 Wehebe Darge Not content with signing an import who played in Australia, the Phantoms then added an Australian as an import with the signing of Wehebe Darge. Already with experience of play- ing in the USA, Finland and Belgium, Darge has slotted seamlessly into the EPL and pro- vides Peterborough with a quick and dynamic forward. #72 Martins Susters Leading the next generation of Peterborough youngsters making an impact at senior level, Latvian-born Martins Susters has excelled with a more prominent role in the Phantoms side this season. Listed at 6’1” and 176lbs, Susters has the size and strength of a power forward but the shooting and stickhandling of a true sniper. 24

MATCH NIGHT REPORT Phoenix soundly beaten by Guildford Guildford Flames - 7 Manchester Phoenix - 1 Manchester Phoenix were comprehensively beaten 7-1 by the Guildford Flames on Saturday night. Phoenix started the game strongly and forced two saves in the opening minute, with Mike Will making a particularly good stop on Robin Kovar. It was the visitors who struck first as a Kevin Phillips shot from the blue line found its way in. Craig Thurston should have levelled but his shot from the slot was saved by Will. The game drifted away from Phoenix in the second period as Andy McKinney was left all alone to tap the puck in at 27:02, before the impressive Marek Maslonka bundled in a third at 32:16. The game was over at 35:17 as a Jez Lundin shot from the blue line went in off the bar. Phoenix did manage to get on the board at 38:56 as a two-on-one situation saw Thurston set up Vaclav Meidl to finish. Any hopes of a Phoenix comeback were ended early in the third period as Jens Eriksson grabbed Guildford’s fifth at 41:36 before Ben Campbell scored an unassisted goal at 48:53. Phoenix took a late penalty, which was punished as Danny Meyers’s shot was tipped in by Jared Lane at 57:11. Gareth O’Flaherty hit the post for Phoenix with twenty seconds remaining but the Flames claimed a deserved road win. Phoenix are at home next Sunday evening against the Peterborough Phantoms, with a 5pm face-off in Blackpool. 30
MATCH NIGHT REPORT Goals galore in Hull Hull Pirates - 8 Manchester Phoenix - 2 Manchester Phoenix ended up on the wrong end of an 11-5 scoreline in Hull on Sunday night. Hull took the lead early on through Andrej Themar at 3:12 but Phoenix responded quickly with Scott Bailey scoring his first Phoenix goal, capitalising on a mistake by the Hull netminder, at 4:46 after being set up by Lewis Baldwin. Hull restored their lead at 7:58 as Dominic Osman found the top corner and Osman soon made it 3-1 at 10:50 as he rounded Steve Fone to score. Phoenix kept themselves in the game momentarily as Vaclav Meidl created an opportunity for Robin Kovar to score on the powerplay at 12:09. However three further Hull goals before the end of the period from Lee Haywood at 14:29, Jonathan Kirk on the powerplay at 18:26 and Lee Bonner at 18:38 put the game beyond Phoenix. Denis Bell started the second period for Phoenix however Hull soon scored again through James Chilcot at 21:55 before Kovar got his second for Phoenix at 22:53 with a well taken goal after being set up by Edgars Bebris. Bonner then scored his second for Hull with a penalty shot at 31:58 and the period ended 9-3 thanks to an Ugnius Cizas goal at 35:46. Hull got their tenth just twenty seconds into the final period through Nathan Salem but Phoenix responded twice as Bailey set up Bebris to score off the post at 45:57 before Bebris returned the favour for Kovar to complete his hat trick at 49:57. The final goal went to Andrew Hirst as he fired in goal number eleven at 57:41. Phoenix are at home on Sunday evening against the Peterborough Phantoms, with a 5pm face-off in Blackpool. 31

IN THE NEWS... Message from Tony Hand As the Phoenix Director of Ice Hockey, Tony Hand MBE wishes to make the following statement concerning the recent events affecting the club - “I want to assure everyone that I have been fully involved in and supportive of all the decisions regarding the Club since our inception and particularly over the recent weeks. I have now worked with Neil Morris for over 10 years and have found him to be a man of integrity who has worked tirelessly on behalf of Manchester Phoenix, to keep the club going “As a club, we have always prided ourselves on the way we look after all our players and this has not changed in the very difficult circumstances we now face. We have known for a little while that the club’s finances were suffering from playing so far from our home and we have kept all the players fully appraised of the difficult situation the club is in. It will have been no surprise to them when we made the difficult and unprec- edented decision to run the team in the EPL with no imports; a decision that, without sufficient funding, was unavoidable. We have been supporting the imports in helping them to find the best outcomes for their individual circumstances, fully conscious of the fact that the signing deadline is the end of this month. “I want to thank the imports who are leaving us and the British players. They have been fantastic in their performances, effort and sacrifices they have had to make. “I would like to give my thanks to the Fylde Ice Arena management and staff, who have worked so hard to accommodate us and make us feel welcome. However, it is not pos- sible to continue playing so far from home “I want to thank all our supporters for sticking with us through these difficult times ad look forward to continuing our great partnership. “I am confident that we can have a competitive team playing at Widnes and look for- ward to the new challenges we face in building the squad for the future around the existing team. We are now looking to the future and I am grateful to the Widnes Ice Rink for giving us an opportunity to play nearer to our home.” Our game against Peterborough Phantoms this Sunday, 15th January, will be played at the Widnes Ice Rink, Unit No 1, Venture Fields, Earle Road, Widnes, WA8 0TA . Face- off will be at 6.30 pm. Future games are expected to face-off at 5.30 pm. In order to give fans an opportunity to hear first hand what the future holds, we can confirm that an Open Fans Forum will take place at the Shooters bar on Thursday, 19th January, starting at 7.30 pm 34
