THE OWNER NEIL MORRIS Well, it certainly hasn’t been an easy festive period either on or off the ice! On the ice 2 home defeats certainly took away some of the seasonal joy, but off the ice.... I’m sure you all read the press release we put out last week. It wasn’t an easy decision to write it, but I felt I owed it to you all to be honest about what situation the club is facing currently. As it stands, by the time you will be reading this, I will have had my meeting with Manchester City Council on Friday, and will hopefully be in a better position to comment on the clubs future. I appreciate just how difficult this is for everyone, but I firmly believe that our patience will be rewarded, and that our return to Manchester will happen sooner rather than later. We have completed all the reports, looked at every issue that was raised first time around, and now have what I feel is an application that is rock solid and ready to go. Someone asked me last week why I’m always laughing, and I told him that laughing is free. And let’s be honest, if I didn’t laugh I’d probably cry, and I know which I prefer to be doing! And always Serva Fidem… 6

THE COACH TONY HAND Well, that was a tough pair of home games for the festive period. Whilst we were unable to get out of first gear against a very strong Telford side, I was incredibly hapoy with the guys response against Hull. Despite losing the game, I believe we took the game to Hull and possibly deserved more than a 3 goal loss. The guys played magnificently, and took a lot of positives away from the rrsult. Obviously, losing a couple of bodies over the Christmas break wasn’t ideal, but these things happen in sport. I would like to thank both players for their contributions to the club during their stay with us. It has been a difficult season, and will only get harder now as we begin the approach to the play offs. The players aand myself haven’t given up hope of reaching them, with us having games in hand over both Bracknell and Sheffield. If we can perform like we did last week on a more regular basis, then there is no reason to believe that we can’t push for the final play off place. 7

Guildford Flames KNOW YOUR ENEMY PHOENIX LIVE 5Stars – GUILDFORD FLAMES #18 Danny Meyers A move back to his native south has seen Danny Meyers transition from one of the country’s best defensive defencemen into one of its top scoring. On almost point per game pace through the first half of the season, Meyers is a key cog in the Flames’ defensive unit. #42 Tuomas Santavuori A veteran of over 450 games in the Finnish top flight, and scorer of exactly 101 goals in the Liiga, Tuomas Santavuori was an eye-catching addition to the Flames squad in late October. Scoring at well over a point per game, his performances on the ice have been eye-catching too. #16 Andy Hemmings Flames fans sing that he’s one of their own, and – aside from a brief tour with both the Bees and Bison – Andy Hemmings is indeed Guildford through and through. On the cusp of his 500th game in Flames colours, Hemmings is a useful contribu- tor to the Guildford third line. #8 Marek Maslonka For all of the import changes at the Spectrum, it is clear that the Flames have found a gem in Marek Maslonka. Already having hit the 20 goal barrier, and scoring a point per game despite also having over 100 PiMs, Maslonka has been an instant hit with the Guildford fans. #48 Ben Campbell A constant thorn in the Phoenix side since his move to the Spectrum back in 2010, Ben Campbell is on course for what would be the most productive season of his already exemplary EPL career. The Flames’ top scoring Brit this season, he is defi- nitely one to watch. 24

HOCKEY ACROSS THE POND This week the eyes of the National Hockey League looked outdoors as the spectacles of the Winter Classic and the Centennial Classic took place on New Year’s Day. The annual event that is the Winter Classic took place in St. Louis on New Year’s Day and was contested between the Saint Louis Blues and the Chicago Blackhawks. The ma- jority of the 46,556 packed into Busch Stadium left happy as the Blues walked away with a 4-1 victory. St Louis’ forward Vladimir Tarasenko picked up two goals in the rath- er lopsided victory in his sides first appearance in a Winter Classic. In Toronto later that day, the Centennial classic was contested between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings. Toronto rookie Auston Matthews was the star of the show as he terrified the Red Wings’ defence and goalie alike in front of 40,148 people at the Exhibition Stadium last Sunday. The two teams couldn’t be separated af- ter the 60 minutes and with the game going into overtime Matthews scored his second of the game with 1:48 remaining to send the Leafs’ home with the extra point. 26

MATCH NIGHT REPORT Late surge hands Hull the points Hull Pirates - 6 Manchester Phoenix - 3 The Manchester Phoenix were unlucky not to take anything from a game which ended 6-3 to the Hull Pirates. In an even first period, which Hull edged in shots 14-13, both sides created good openings but were unable to find the net. Phoenix had a couple of goalmouth scrambles and Robin Kovar was stopped by Jordan Marr whilst Hull’s Andrej Themar and Nathan Salem were both denied from close in by Steve Fone. The second period followed a similar pattern with Edgars Bebris going close for Phoenix but Hull began to exert more pressure as the period wore on, and got their reward at 32:29 as Ryan Watt lifted the puck over Fone. Soon after, the visitors doubled their lead as Stanislav Lascek tipped in a Salem pass at 36:23. Phoenix refused to roll over and two quick goals at the start of the third period tied the game. Kovar finished off a two-on-one at 44:27 as he found the top corner before Vaclav Meidl fired under Marr at 45:37 on a breakaway. However, a controversial late penalty gave Hull the opportunity to restore their lead, which was taken by Jason Hewitt at 52:30 as he scored from the slot. Just forty seconds later, Dominic Osman scored from a tight angle to make it 4-2 but Phoenix responded as Kovar raced down the left wing and centred for Gareth O’Flaherty to net at 54:37. Hull put an undeserved gloss on the scoreline with two late goals from Themar at 55:34 and Martin Ondrej at 56:45 as a short-benched Phoenix eventually ran out of steam. Phoenix are at home next Saturday evening against the Guildford Flames, with a 5pm face-off in Blackpool. 32
