ICT Troubleshooting & Maintenance Level 1 50 CHAPTER 9: BASIC COMPUTER FAULT SYMPTOM 9.1 Basic Computer Fault Symptom. • Identify Different Type Of Basic Computer Faults Symptom Usually Occurs. Usually after we finish built a complete computer, some errors may occur when you switch on the computer. The symptom-symptom error may occur like: 1. You turn on the computer and nothing happens. No light, no beeps, no fans noise. 2. The computer comes on, but nothing appears on your screen monitor. 3. If you regularly get the “Blue Screen of Death”, you may have random access memory (RAM) problem. 4. If you boot up, and the computer cannot find the C: drive, you might have a bad hard drive. 5. No sound from speakers. 6. Fuzzy image on monitor 7. Modem error message says, “No Dial Tone”. 8. Error Messages on Start Up. • Steps To Solve The Symptom Occur 1. You turn on the computer and nothing happens: - Check for the power cable is plugged in tightly to the power supply. - Check the condition of the power cables is good or not. - Make sure the power supply is working properly. - Check all power supply cable was connected to the motherboard and other device. - If all the power cables are connected, double check the power socket to make sure it is not faulty. 2. The computer comes on but nothing happens: - Try using other monitor you know is good on the computer and see if anything shows up on the screen. - Check the power cable is plug in or not. - Check the graphic card of the computer by using another card from other computer or using the build in graphic card.

If you regularly get the “Blue Screen of Death”, you may have random access memory (RAM) problem: - Check your system by run a virus scan and spyware scan after updating your definition files. - To look at the Windows system event log or to debug the memory dump (mini dump) that Windows created when the error occurred. - To reinstall and update your system’s device drivers. - Run a memory test to check your computer’s RAM. Memory faults can easily cause blue screen errors, so see if your RAM is error free. - Load the default BIOS values where the resource conflicts and timing issues can be caused by incorrect BIOS settings. 4. If you boot up, and the computer cannot find the C: drive, you might have a bad hard drive: - Swap hard drives with another computer to diagnose the problem. - Check the hard drives cable whether is connect or not. - Check for the power cables which connect to the hard drive. - Check for the jumper in hard drive whether is in master or slave. 5. No sound from speakers: - Check at the back of computer whether you connect to the right socket on the sound card usually marked Audio Out. - Check the sound card driver is correctly installed or not. - Check sound card properly installed in the PCI slot if you are additional adds another sound card. 6. Fuzzy image on monitor: - Make sure no speakers are too close to the monitor or other source because monitors are sensitive to electro- magnetic interference. - Check the VGA cable that connected between CPU and monitor. 7. Modem error message says, “No Dial Tone”: - Check the modem cable is connected correctly or not. - Use another phone to test the phone line whether have Dial Tone or not. - Check the telephone extension line. 8. Error Messages on Start Up: - Place the Windows 7 installation disk into the optical disk drive. Restart your computer. - Follow prompts to press any key when the \"Press any key to boot from CD or DVD\" window appears. Wait for Windows to load the files. - Follow prompts to select your language, time and keyboard or input method at the \"Install Windows\" screen. Click \"Next.\" - Click \"Repair your computer\" at the bottom of the next screen. - Click the radio button next to \"Use recovery tools that can help fix problems starting Windows\" option and select your operating system. Click \"Next.\" - Click \"Startup Repair\" at the \"System Recovery Options\" screen. The tool will automatically detect and fix startup errors. Your PC might restart more than once.

Thereafter, you can perform the diagnostics whenever you want to confirm that the hardware functions properly. You can run the test by using different software which can found in the internet like Test My Hardware 1.1, NovaBench 2, ASTRA –Advanced Sysinfo Tool 5.11 and so on. There are also options to check CPU Temperature and perform Internet Speed Test (this will take you to an external website).
