Diocese of BomBay acTiviTy RePoRT 2020-21 (MOCCB – EDUCATION BAORD) From the year 2002 all the educational institutions were placed by the MOCCB with the newly established education Board, essentially with a view to aid and advise MOCCB with regards to the institutions under MOCCB. Education Board monitor the activities curricular, co- curricular and extra-curricular activities and supervise the infrastructure in the institutions. St. Thomas English School, Kalyan is a co-educational English School owned and managed by the Malankara Orthodox Church Council. The academic year began in the month June with 1680 students on roll. We have 60 staff working with us. This year too, the school maintained 100% SSC result. We are extremely proud to announce that Master Varun Arvind came first with 99%, closely followed by Miss Shradha Gaikwad Nileshwith 98.4%. Master Prajapat Keshav came 3rd with 97% marks. 82 students scored distinction and the remaining 30 students first class. We congratulation all our students for making their alma mater proud. Unlike the previous years, the academic year 2020-21 was conducted online as the pandemic of Covid 19 forced the government for a complete lockdown. In spite of this unprecedented situation we took all efforts to see that quality education was rendered. Regular online classes /vacation classes were conducted from 1st April to 10th May for all classes to engage the students and make them mentally prepared and active. It also benefited teachers as they got accustomed to teaching children on the virtual platform before the new academic year, classes for which started from second week of June 2020. Intensive follow up was made by principal and office staff and with the cooperation of teachers and parents, every class recorded more than 95% attendance. Std IX to XII had additional test and exams from DEO’s Dept. Students participated actively in the online classes. In August 2020, Public exam GPSC was conducted in our school. January 2021, saw the advent of offline classes. It was like a dream to see students of std VI to XII attending school with proper Corona protocols. in February 2021, there were many activities held in school regarding “Importance of election” such as quiz competition, essay writing and rally organized from school campus maintaining all covid protocols. Online teaching was initiated with the help of the Next Learning Platform provided by the Next Education, who were already providing quality e-learning content prior to the lockdown. By 8th June the school migrated to Microsoft Teams, which continues to date. Over the course of one year, the school successfully implemented not only online teaching but most of the activities as well over the digital platform. Under scholastics, online classes are being conducted in a design meant to emulate physical classes as closely as possible. Time has been allotted for assembly, main subjects, graded subjects and co-curricular activities. Arrangements have been made for remedial sessions, especially for higher classes. Online examinations were introduced last year. The school has been conducting revision tests, internal assessments, unit and term exams. This year, other than subjective and MCQ-based exams, the school is also conducting viva on a one-to-one basis. The students will also be assessed on the bases of their work-completion, project work, class response, attentiveness and creativity. Although this emergency situation leads to closure of face to face interaction with students but we got golden opportunity to involve students and their parents to learn essence of art of life. Live events were conducted to celebrate various festivals- Independence day, Teachers’ day, Diwali, Children’s day, Christmas and Maharashtra day. More than 1500 people were connected and enjoyed celebration. Other activities - St Thomas day, St. Gregorios day, Bishop’s birthday, COVID-19 awareness and precautions posters and videos were displayed. Art Festival was successfully celebrated on Microsoft platform with external judges from Vashi Schools. Republic day was celebrated off-line in presence of Thirumeni and Ex-students were felicitated for scoring merit certificates from CBSE. In order to reduce the anxiety and tension during lock down, our students of Std. X were specially counselled by Sr. Bridget. Students of Std X were always lucky to avail their Manager’s blessing every year. This year also a team of media was present here along with our respected Thirumeni and children enjoyed Thirumeni’s presence and blessings. An aptitude test was conducted for std X by Dr. Kamini Deshmukh from Mumbai. The result and the proper guidance was given by her to all parents on March 18th. Moderator’s class was conducted for Sanskrit for Std X by Dr. Geeta Nambiar, teacher of St. Mary’s Multipurpose School, Vashi. Olympiad exam also was conducted on digital platform On December 7th we started off line classes for Std X with the permission of Panchayat authorities and on 1st of February Std IX off line classes were started. CBSE give more importance for the professional development programmes for teachers to enhance the quality of education. A number of online training in various subjects and topics they have arranged and made it mandatory for teachers to attend and get the certificates. This includes experiential and competency based trainings. Our 41 teachers had done 152 CBSE training, 160 from DIKSHA App and 47 other trainings. On 23rd March, all teachers attended webinar on NEP 2020 conducted by CBSE. We also have conducted a webinar for NEP 2020 for parents on 24th March. On 20th February, we arranged a PTA meeting. 5th April was the last working day for teachers and on 7th April, 2021 we started our new academic year. School re-opened on 2nd June after summer vacation. sT. THomas PUBLic scHooL (KiRKee, PUNe) I quote Joy Paterno, “Believe deep down in your heart that you’re destined to do great things.” A quote that helps to give us an even greater sense of the meaning of life. We are living in extra ordinary times, and the 2020-2021 school year has been a year like no other. As the COVID 19 global pandemic continues to impact our communities, education looks a lot different than our traditional model. We have all been working through the most challenging time and we have done so together and remain undaunted. For all the obstacles that have come our way, teachers and students have pushed forward and made the best of our virtual learning environment. Moreover, they have done so with creativity, care and commitment. While we have honed our technological skills, each person in our educational community – our students, our parents and guardians, teachers and non-teaching staff have worked together. The health and safety of our students and staff is paramount. Protocols for cleaning, physical distancing and facial coverings are embedded in our plan and our daily routine. Beginning with online learning with consideration for students receiving specialized services, the school approached Microsoft Teams. The 2020- 2021 Annual Report reflects the work underway throughout this year on our road to recovery. 1. Academics a) Online Classes : Online learning is catalysing a pedagogical shift in how we teach and learn. There is a shift away from top-down lecturing and passive students to a more interactive, collaborative, approach in which students and teachers co-create the learning process. On regular basis, the online classes begin with the morning assembly which includes yoga/ exercises, the National Anthem, the Pledge, a hymn, a morning prayer and a thought for the day reflection. Regular classes were conducted for all the subjects including Computer, General Knowledge, Value Education, Library, Physical Education etc. As per the time restrictions set by the Education Department, section-wise appropriate time was allotted. Through the videos and virtual lab activities conducted by the Science teachers the students experienced the Science Practical sessions. b) Remedial Classes: The teachers gave an opportunity to the students who faced difficulties in their studies and those who were unable to attend the Online classes through remedial classes. To cope up with the studies extra classes was taken for classes IX and X. c) Assessments: Louis Malaguzzi once said, “The wider the range of possibilities we offer children, the more intense will be their motivations and the richer their experiences.” For a comprehensive understanding of the concepts, class and subject wise assignments, project work and activities were also conducted. For online assessments regular examination pattern was adapted. The teachers planned and conducted revision tests, internal assessments, unit and term exams. 2. Celebrations a) Guru Purnima: Guru Purnima is an Indian Festival dedicated to spiritual and academic teachers; a day sacred to the memory of the ancient ‘Sage Vyasa’. The school conducted a special assembly to mark the occasion. The students from each class participated by presenting poems, speeches etc signifying the importance of the day. b) Independence Day: The Online Independence Day programme began with the flag hoisting animation video followed by the National Anthem. Speeches and songs by the Pre-primary and the Primary students highlighted the significance of Independence. c) Teacher’s Day: The school celebrated Teacher’s Day with great gusto and gaiety on 5th September 2020. The students performed a cultural show to denote their love, respect, acknowledgement and recognition of the hard work put in by the teachers towards their development. Diocese of BomBay d) Hindi Divas: Hindi Divas is celebrated on September 14 to pay tribute to the official language of India. Hindi was adopted as the official language by constituent assembly on September 14, 1949. The students and staff celebrated Hindi Divas online, stressing the importance of the country’s most widely spoken language through speeches. Some students from every class participated in giving speech related to Hindi Divas. Everybody at home made efforts to use Hindi as medium of conversation for the day. e) Founder’s Day: Every year on the 28th of September, we remember a noble soul, who selflessly reached out to help and uplift those in need- Our Founder, Late Lamented Arch Bishop His Grace Dr. Philipose Mar Theophilus. To commemorate the death anniversary of our Founder the students participated in the online programme which included the reading of verses from the holy books, an invocation prayer, skits, dance, songs and a floral tribute. f) Diwali Celebration: The school celebrated Diwali on the digital platform with a programme that included a special prayer dance based on the theme Diwali. The students presented a skit on the significance of Diwali. Message was delivered by the student about the right way to celebrate Diwali without risking lives in the times of corona. g) Children’s Day: Children’s day was celebrated online like other occasions. The teachers put up a skit, sang for the children and read a poem. h) Christmas Celebration: The school celebrated Christmas on 23rd December with joy. Prayerful and entertaining programmes were put up by all the sections. The students prayed, recited a poem, enacted a skit, presented a dance and spoke about the significance of the Christmas tree, Stockings and Santa Claus. The School Director Dr. C J Samuel, Rev Fr. John Mathia and the Administrator Dr Mrs Roshni George gave their valuable messages and blessings. i) Republic Day: This year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, things were a little different. School authorities tried their best to make the virtual Republic Day celebration as lively as possible. The 72nd Republic Day was celebrated with the hoisting of the National Flag followed by the National Anthem, Pledge, Preamble and a patriotic song ‘Jai Javan’. Speeches in English and Hindi coupled with cultural programmes were displayed online. Our Director Dr. C J Samuel in his address highlighted the significance of the day, and made the children aware that the future of the country lies in their hands. Though the students were exempted from attending the celebration in school, the teaching and the non-teaching staff attended the flag-hoisting function in adherence to all Covid-19 safety protocols. j) Director Sir’s birthday Celebration: Dedicating one’s entire life to the service of humanity is a calling, the truly blessed can achieve. On 28thJanuary the staff and students of Arch Bishop Mar Theophilus, St Thomas Public School and Dr Mar Theophilus ICSE School together celebrated our Director’s birthday. Diocese of BomBay 3. Activities: a) Field trips : Field trips are a common strategy used in education. Curriculum- connected activities make learning more likely. This year the pandemic deprived the students from going to actual locations for their field trips. Nevertheless, the field trips were carried out virtually. Students were taken on a virtual tour to sugar mill, a jaggery plant, a Paithani Sari weaving unit, a cement block factory and a dairy milk unit. b) Literary activities : In order to improve their reading skills, students were motivated to read books and write a book review to critically analyse the book. Students also noted down new words they came across thereby enriching their vocabulary. To foster their literary skills, students were encouraged to write articles for the school magazine. Competitions are opportunities to challenge one self. Winning is not the sole criterion, rather participating and focusing on what one gains from the experience is what matters. To encourage students to come forward and compete against each other, various competitions were held throughout the year. c) Elocution /Poetry Competition : Elocution / Poetry competitions were held in English, Hindi and Marathi for the Primary and the Secondary sections to help build a genuine love for the language and also to boost their confidence levels. d) Drawing Competition : Drawing Competitions can be a great way to develop one’s artistic abilities. A Drawing Competition was held for the students of Primary and Secondary section. e) Rangoli Competition : Rangoli is an art form, originating in the Indian subcontinent, in which patterns are created on the floor or the ground using materials such as coloured rice, sand, flower petals and coloured rocks. The Rangoli Competition is a way to showcase the creative potentials of the students. A Rangoli Competition was held for the students of Secondary section. f) Best Out of Waste Competition : Best Out of Waste competition was held for the students of the Primary and Secondary section. The objective of the competition was to create love for the environment by making articles with the broken bangles, plastic bottles, peanut shells, beads, thermocol glasses, old CD etc. They made attractive and useful things from the waste material. g) Science Quiz : Since time immemorial, Science has always fascinated mankind and because of this deep fascination, man tried to delve deeper into Science to find solutions to the problems that he faced. With the intention of developing an interest in Science, to understand the applications of Science in various fields, as well as to inculcate a scientific temper in young minds, the Science Quiz was conducted. h) Art and Craft activities : Art and Craft have always been an integral part of school education. Apart from improving the fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, it encourages self-expression and boosts self-esteem. Throughout the year, the students expressed their creative skills through their Art and Craft activities. Diocese of BomBay decorations, Snowman, Christmas tree decorations, snowflakes, brain teasers etc. 4. Competitive Exams:  The Maharashtra Talent Search Exam was conducted on 23rd January 2021 for the students of Std IX AND X.  The National Talent Search Scholarship Exam will be conducted in April 2021 for the students of Std V and VIII. Regular classes are been conducted for those who are appearing for the Scholarship Exam. 5. Interactions: Staying connected with the members of the school community was challenge during the lockdown. To stay connected and have authentic communication between the members of the school community, technology came into play. WhatsApp groups of all the classes were created and the queries of the students as well as the parents were answered. To keep the morale of the staff high during these trying times, regular staff meetings were held throughout the year. Since online teaching was something new for the staff, they had to be trained on how to make use of technology and so regular training sessions were held until the teachers were comfortable to use it. Apart from the teachers, parents have a major role to play in the development of their child. Regular Parent- Teacher interactions along with the children in attendance were held to update the parent about the performance of their child. Considering ‘New Normal’ after pandemic, our school counsellors have arranged students’ sessions focussing on emotional management and learning motivation during times of digital learning.
