It supports bothclean technology innovations of SMEs and startup entrepreneurs to enhance opportunities to achieve sustainable commercial success.The model follows Cleantech ecosystem approach which, among others, includes close engagement with the private sector, scaling up the momentum forsustainable industrial development and strengthening the policy framework as required. It works closely with diverse stakeholders across the spectrumsuch as private sector, public sector, academia, industrial associations, provincial governments, potential investors, partner agencies, financial institutionsand autonomous research centers in the country. Innovative Industry for Climate ChangeNeil BuhneResident Coordinator of United Nations in Pakistan In Pakistan and in many countries around the world, we see the emergence of more and more people, particularly young women and men, having a stronger voice and innovatively engaging more on issues of poverty and exclusion. These changes are also linked to the emergence of innovations in clean technologies by entrepreneurs and civil society, as part of dramatic shifts in the development landscape accelerated by new technologies and new financial models. For the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be met, these developments are encouraging, as deliberate and calculated investment in testing new ways of triggering change, and as important ways to ensure that “no one is left behind”. By introducing the culture of Investor Connect to Pakistan, UNIDO is promoting Innovations in clean technologies. I am hope- ful that GCIP Pakistan will be able to utilize energies of many young innovators in right direction, eventually leading to the launching of new cleantech startups and companies based on such innovations. By organizing the first of its kind Investor Summit in Pakistan, UNIDO has been able to bring together more than 500 incredible innovators with powerful businesses for funding. This is an important step in the right direction. Just last year, a startup “Zaheen Machine” made their debut by presenting their idea on the platform that UNIDO provided and which led to securing business from SNGPL. It embodies the spirit of the new generation of South Asian start-ups thatembrace indigenous technology to provide sustainable solutions to local problems. Their product has resulted in reduction of huge amount of carbon emissions inthousands of households where the burning of natural gas is reduced by 5 hours per day during 5 months per year. The GCIP competition provided a great way to increaseawareness of the product and acquaint the innovators with other entrepreneurs at local and global level. This is a big achievement.The GCIP is focused on enhancing and emerging cleantech startups as well as the local entrepreneurial ecosystem and the policy framework in Pakistan. As a UN agency primarily focusing on industrial development, UNIDO has unique technical capabilities to address industrial develop- ment needs through a variety of highly specialized services promoting social inclusion, competitiveness and environmental sustain- ability. At present, UNIDO has a sound energy portfolio in Pakistan mostly financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), which focuses on safeguarding the environment while fostering industrial development. The project “Promoting Sustainable Energy Production & Use from Biomass in Pakistan” supports the use of biomass as an alterna- tive energy resource that can strengthen the industrial sector and help reduce the energy crisis and cater to the ever-increasingenergy demand in the country. The project promotes the market-based adoption of modern biomass conversion technologies –especially gasification- to power small andmedium industries (SMI) and electrify rural areas where most of the biomass resources are available. By doing so, UNIDO has been providing policy advisory services forbiomass promotion, setting up biomass-based pilot units in industrial installations and carrying out a series of awareness and capacity building initiatives.As part of the Government’s efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9, the project \"Sustainable Energy Initiative for Industrial Sector in Pakistan\" seeks topursue industrial development while minimizing the environmental negative impacts. Creating Jobs, Advancing Sustainable GrowthDr Shahina WaheedNational Project Coordinator, GCIP Pakistan Through new collaborations across disciplines and sectors, the Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (GCIP) has been able to build the national capacity for clean technologies along with a supportive local entrepreneurial ecosystem for SMEs by developing clean and resource synergistic initiative in Pakistan. Through the growing community of national and international partners, selected Pakistani cleantech entrepreneurs are connected to the potential partners in other GCIP countries such as Malaysia, South Africa and Turkey etc. At the Cleantech Global Forum in Silicon Valley USA, the most innovative cleantech entrepreneurs come together to forge networks; meet potential partners and investors from around the world. GCIP Pakistan commenced in 2014 and attracted 81 applicant teams during its first cycle of the call for awards, 28 were declared as semi-finalists and four teams won prizes ranging from 25,000 US$ to 30,000 US$, and the national winner was sponsored to participate in the Global Forum at Silicon Valley in the USA. The programme completed its second cycle in 2015 with great success. It attracted 332 innovations, out of which 55 best SMEs and start-ups were supported, as semi-finalists, through extensive mentoring, training, access to investors and showcas- ing opportunities. The five national winners of the call were awarded with prizes ranging from US$ 20,000 (National Winner)to US$ 15,000 (3 Prizes), with an additional prize of US$ 15,000 for the “Most Promising Woman-led Business” in the categories of energy efficiency, renewable energy,water efficiency and waste to energy. As part of the package, the winners further participated in the global competition held in Silicon valley, USA and won the ‘GlobalCategory Award’ in the category of Waste to Energy. The second cycle saw a nearly fourfold increase in participants, doubling the number of teams that qualified for thesemi-finalist category.During the third call cycle in 2016, 560 entrepreneurs and innovators in Pakistan applied for the Cleantech Competition, while 82 of them made it to the semi-finals, andreceived incubation, mentorship and training opportunities. It is important to mention that GCIP Pakistan attracted, not only the highest number of applications both inthe years 2015 and 2016 among all the countries where this programme is offered, but also resulted into the highest number of semi-finalists. The national winners of thisthird cycle, along with the best start-ups from each country again competed for the global award in Silicon Valley and won “Global Category Award” again in the categoryof “Waste to Energy” as in 2015. Thus, the overall outcome was that two Pakistani startups won global awards in the “Waste to Energy” category at the global competitionheld in USA in 2016 & 2017 consecutively.In order to ensure gender mainstreaming and attracting more women to participate in the competition, a Women Business Growth Centre (WBGC) has been launched, incollaboration with Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), to serve as a facilitation unit that enhances the ability, mobility, visibility and connectivity ofwomen entrepreneurs in Pakistan. Dreaming of a Better EarthTawanai Solutions is a technology startup, the team comprises of a group of dreamers trying to contribute towards a better earth. The product is a cropwaste gasifier; when mounted on a tractor it reduces the operating cost of the vehicle on average by 50% with significantly lesser emissions as comparedto the conventional diesel. The product was developed because of an acute shortage of Natural Gas in Pakistan.The startup won in GCIP Competition 2015 nationally, as well as globally in the category of 'Waste to Energy'. Bolt Bike offers an alternative that does notuse petrol or produce toxic fumes.Using electronics and pedalling power, the bike offers a unique intra-city commuting solution.The brainchild of two mechanical engineers based in Lahore, Bolt Bike won the “Most Promising Woman-led Business Award” in 2015.The Bike is a hybrid technology bicycle run by battery power and human muscle power. Led by a woman entrepreneur, the company aims to revolutionizestandard commuting by introducing their line of products, tailored to fit each of their targeted market segments. Home and Energy for AllGreenSun is a technology integration startup trying to bridge the gap between building efficiency measures and renewable energy integration within thebuilding structure. The technology integrates energy into the architecture of buildings in a unique manner. Through this solution, the house is insulated androof is integrated photovoltaically depending on the customers’ needs. The solution involves both passive and active measures to reduce electricity bills by80% on an average. Creative Energy Efficient IncubatorA creative woman innovator revolutionized the typical incubators into a modified portable, battery operated device, having many more features than anormal incubator. She designed a portable incubator for far flung rural areas, which is both cost and energy efficient with advanced monitoring andcontrolling parameters. The first prototype was successfully prepared at the end of December 2015.The team participated in GCIP competition in 2016 and won the “Most Promising Woman Led Business Award”. Creating a Carbon Smart FutureThe journey of Green Team, towards a cleaner tomorrow, began in 2011. It initiated with an idea to find a solution for reducing waste, which was increasingrapidly at an industrial plan site. The idea was to convert waste into energy as the plant had to use a diesel generator for power supply during electricityshort falls. The initiative started at a lab scale by grouping waste materials according to their calorific value etc., the effort continued but the final productdevelopment took years.During this process, the team learned about the GCIP Call for Awards in 2016 and participated in it as a lifetime opportunity which unfolded a new learningadventure to finalize the product, right from the national academy to the business clinics etc. The collaborative effort resulted into winning not only thenational competition as Runner-up in Pakistan, but also the “Global Category Award” in the category of waste to energy in Silicon Valley, USA. Making Medical Imaging SaferThe product “Gen.Ro.CT” (Generic Radiation Optimized CT) evolved with the desire of the team to contribute towards humanity by innovation in the fieldof Bio-medicine. It is an efficient Computed Tomography scanning solution that significantly reduces the hazardous X-ray radiations involved in convention-al CT scans, without degrading the CT image quality. This cost-and-energy-effective solution extends the effective lifespan of a standard CT scanner. It offers50% lesser radiation with energy consumption along with enhancing the productivity of the machine.The startup contributes to the local medical industry by upgrading conventional CT scanners used in Pakistani hospitals with little or no hardware modifica-tions. Innovating the Use of Natural ResourcesThe team ‘Inventors’ strived to develop energy alternatives to overcome the energy crises throughout the country. The goal was to design green energyefficient devices that could be conveniently managed, to reduce net utilization of energy by addressing a major gap in the market. The innovation is anumbrella operated by solar energy, innovated for traffic wardens, army men, pilgrims, and visitors. Conserving Even Bit of ResourcesWaste water treatment is huge problem in Pakistan. The Team VegA’S started as a group of environmentally conscious young entrepreneurs trying toaddress the impending crisis of groundwater usage in the industrial and municipal sector of Pakistan. Since 2005, the team has been working on treatingorganic and inorganic pollutants in waste water.VegA’S took this challenge as an opportunity and developed a highly resilient treatment design called ‘SAVOR Technology’ that operates on the gravity andflow velocity of wastewater to remove biodegradable organic pollutants. The GCIP Call for Awards 2016 provided a vital platform at the national and inter-national level, enabling the team to get recognition as a serious Cleantech Startup in this sector. 20 Smart Irrigation System Simplicity Labs is a technology startup that provides smart solutions for smart spaces. The solution is a tractor mounted high efficiency irrigation system that resolves irrigation problems in arid areas of Pakistan. The technology, if applied properly, may drastically facilitate farmers, at all levels, in arid regions by reducing their dependency on rainfall. Participation in GCIP competition motivated the innovator to apply the technology in different regions and test the system in a holistic manner. Providing Lights when Sun Goes DownInfinity light is a technology startup aiming to provide a renewable source of lighting to millions of poverty stricken people in Pakistan that either have noaccess to the electrical grid or cannot afford the cost of electricity.Infinity Light’s first prototype is a generator mounted on a wooden frame, which is driven with the help of a pulley system and a weight. It takes only acouple of seconds to lift the weight to a height of 10 ft., the action powers an LED bar, creating 20 minutes of light on its descent. The best part is that noexpense is incurred in generating this electricity. Such free, clean and safe lighting is dire need of a huge population in Pakistan living under poor circum-stances.In 2016, the team participated in GCIP and learned to improve the business plan to cater the identified market. Managing Water PollutionThe team developed an innovative new technology for water pollution management, in industrial areas; using floating mats sustain and support plants. Inthis system, roots grow into the water beneath, providing a large surface area for contaminants removal and growth of biofilms. This technology is nowapplied successfully in one of the biggest textile units of the country for treatment of industrial waste water; thereby creating an innovative method forcleaning industrial waste water.The team worked on floating treatment of wetlands (10,000 sqft) in one of the sewage stabilization ponds located in Faisalabad. This technology was inno-vated for the remediation of both domestic and industrial effluent from industrial waste water. Treatment of Brackish Water through Reverse OsmosisPakistan is among the 36 most water stressed countries that experience severe scarcity of water. A group of researchers developed a Reverse Osmosis (RO)water treatment technology to address the problem by treating brackish water for drinking purposes. This technology is environmental friendly and hasthe ability to provide high quality drinking water treated at a relatively low operational and maintenance cost.The product is a customized technology tailored to the requirements of the end users and quality of untreated raw water. The pilot plant is fully functionaland operational for the past 6 months treating wide range of salinity conditions from 2000 to 5000 mg-TDS/L at high water recovery rates. To make tech-nology further green, they are also working on converting it from conventional energy to solar energy and integrating it with the RO system.GCIP Startup Stories from Pakistan 23
Energy Efficient GeysersTeam SavCon introduced their novel concept of water heating technology which was then incorporated in the water heater/ geyser. This uniquely designedwater heater/ geyser was not only efficient but was also cost effective, which addresses the pain of the customers as it is cheaper and consumes around50% less natural gas than traditional ones.This newly designed efficient water heater was launched and introduced into the market after qualifying as Runner-up in GCIP 2014 with the technicalsupport of business and specialized mentors. Capturing MobilityCapture Mobility developed a hybrid micro wind turbine to harvest the turbulence of passing by traffic. It can harvest both solar and wind energy and canbe placed by the side of highways, high-speed railway tracks and even on the rooftops. One turbine is able to generate 300 watt/hour at the same time itcan capture the carbon particles (PM10 and PM2.5) with the integrated filtering sheets inside the fins of turbine. These hazardous particles create cancerand asthma every year in thousands of people.Capture Mobility is one of the low carbon innovation businesses and is one of the semifinalists of GCIP Call for Awards cycle 2014. Investing in Technology & InnovationInvestor Connect refers to an event whereby the innovators have a one to one session with investors, and the former pitches to the later. And if the inves-tors are convinced, they would invest in the idea of the innovator so that it can be commercialized or scaled up.The session was inaugurated formally by the Federal Secretary of Climate Change, Mr. Syed Abu Ahmed Akif; along with the UN Resident Coordinator, Mr.Niel Buhne; UNIDO Representative, Mr. Esam Alqararah; UNIDO Project Manager from HQ, Mr. Alois Mhlanga and representatives of Islamabad Chamberof Commerce and Industry, along with investors and industry officials.On the occasion of investor connect, the Federal Secretary of Climate Change also inaugurated “Industry Challenge Award” to support in creating thisculture of Cleantech Investment which is helping entrepreneurs as well as promoting the environmentally friendly products. Details are as follows:• Over 250 participants attended the session• 25 Investors, including institutional, individual and groups• 36 teams of Innovators attended the session• An exhibition showcasing products by women titled 'Women in Green Industry' was held• 45 aspiring women entrepreneurs also attended the session and discussed their ideas related to green industry with investors• 125 Investor sessions meetings between investors and innovators were facilitated by the GCIP team, complemented by many informal meetings during Hi- Tea Networking session• 12 agreements closed on the day of event• 40 agreements are known to proceed to the second stage based on one to many business partnerships of investors & innovators• 80% of Investors reported that the meetings were highly positive and that they intend to follow-up on business opportunities after the session 26 Investing in Technology & Innovation
