English for Communication and Study Skills Chapter 1 Activity 1 Bella LlegoActivity: Find the definitionObjective: Students learn how to use guide words and learn to find thedefinition.Procedure: Divide the students into small groups (3-5 persons/ group. 1. Internet is needed to connect to Oxford Advanced LearnersDictionary.Go to ‘google’ and type ‘oald’ in the search box, then you canaccess to the link of AOALD. 2. Explain how to use the online OALD. Start typing the word you want to loop up in the dictionarysearch box. Words will appear under the search box as you type. You caneither select one of these suggested words or finish typing the word youwant and pre “Enter” or the Search button. The best matching entry willbe returned. Have a look in the other results list to see other close matchesfor what you’ve typed. You can also find out how to spell the word, listenthe pronunciation, find the symbols used in the dictionary, part of speech,and find out the original of a word. 1. Make enough lists of words to find out in the dictionary. 2. Give students 10-15 minutes to finish their worksheets (compare and discuss with their groups. 3. Divide the students into small groups (3-5 persons/ group). 2. Show pictures one by one to the students one by one and ask them to make a list on the piece of paper 3. Ask the students to figure out the pictures. Example: Axe spray, a Hollister clothes bag, school flyers, magazine 4. Student must read the passage and then respond to the questions. 5. Each question will ask the student to make a logical inference on textual details. 6. Students must explain their answer by referencing the text. 15
