10th March, 2022 Subject: Women Catechist Course (WCC) Dear Fathers and Sisters, It is recalled here that Pope Francis in his Apostolic Letter, \"Antiquum ministerium\" had instituted the \"Lay ministry of Catechist\" on 10 May 2021. This is to respond to contemporary need of the Church to recognize the vocation of lay men and women and to get them formally involved in the work of catechesis. The new ministry as such has its ancient origins that can be traced in the Gospel of Luke and in St. Paul's letters to the Corinthians and Galatians. The spirit of this new ministry is not just to recognize the vocation of lay people and to make them mere catechism teachers of children. Rather, it elevates and esteems the true lay vocation. Therefore, it is fitting that well organized and sustainable programmes be set up in our Archdiocese. Such programmes must be scripture based catechesis with adequate theological and doctrinal foundation and with deep missionary commitment proper to every baptized person. The Church intents that such commitment be carried out in a fully secular manner and avoid overemphasis on the ministry of the ordained and consecrated persons. Thus, the trained catechists of both women and men are to be support for the parishes and diocese as a whole. Till date, the Church in our region has accomplished a great deal in this regard. For example, the existing two-year diploma course offered at the Pastoral Training Centre (PTC), Imphal (but opened only to male candidates). In addition to this and in the spirit of the vision of Pope Francis, our Archdiocese is arranging a training programme only for women. I earnestly appeal to you to identify suitable candidates from your respective parishes and centres and encourage your parishioners to get involved in Church's ministry. The Organizers are Rev. Fr. (Dr.) Linus Neli, Rev. Fr. (Dr). Varghese Velickakam and Rev. Fr. Solomon. Kindly contact them for eventual follow up of the progammes. Yours in Christ Jesus, +Dominic Lumon DD., Archbishop of Imphal
