The History of Social MediaContinued from page 1...20th Century Social MediaAfter the first super computers werecreated in the 1940s, scientists andengineers began to develop ways tocreate networks between thosecomputers, and this would later leadto the birth of the Internet. The earliest forms of the Internet, such as ARPANET, were developedin the 1960s. This early Internet wasextremely complex, and only usedby computer experts, engineers, scientists, and librarians.By the 1970s, networking technolo-gy had improved and Bulletin BoardSystems (BBSs) came online. Thesewere the first type of sites thatallowed users to log on and interactwith each other. Unfortunately, BBSshad a reputation for hosting riskyand illegal materials like virus codeand hacking instructions. In the 1980s, home computers werebecoming more common and socialmedia was growing more sophisti-cated. Internet relay chats, or IRCs,were first used in the late 1980s andcontinued to be popular well into the1990s.The first recognizable social mediasite (that most people agree on), isSix Degrees, created in 1997. Itenabled users to upload a profileand make friends with other users. In the late 1990s, the first bloggingsites became popular, spurring onthe social media phenomenon.PresentSocial media has come a long waysince the days of BBSs and IRCchats. With major social networksand social media sites makingchanges and improvements daily, social media will continue to evolvein the coming years. It’s not just a phase, and likely won’tgo away any time soon… at leastuntil something better comes along.Sources:https://smallbiztrends.com/2013/05/the-complete-history-of-so-cial-media-infographic.htmlhttps://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2009/10/the-history-and-evo-lution-of-social-media/
