Petersdorf.Dr. Petersdorf became an editor of Harrison's in 1968 for the preparation of the sixth edition andserved as Editor-in-Chief of the tenth edition. He was a powerful force for seven editions and morethan 20 years in estabUshing the pivotal role of this book in the education of students, residents andpractitioners of medicine.Dr. Petersdorf & a graduate of Brown University and of Yale University Medical School. Hisgraduate training included residencies in medicine at Yale and at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital anda research fellowship at Johns Hopkins. A s Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University ofWashington he fashioned one of the truly great departments of internal medicine in the nation, withwell-balanced and great strengths in education, clinical care, and research. His interests and contribu-tions broadened steadily and he served suicessively as the first President of the newly merged Brighamand Women's Hospital in Boston, as Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and Dean of the School ofMedicine, University of California, San Diego, and most recently as President of the Association ofAmerican Medical Colleges.Dr. Petersdorf has, from the beginning of his career, made notable and outstanding contributionsin a number of areas in the field of Infectious Disease. H e carried out a series of classic studies on thepathogenesis of fever, on pneumococcal meningitis and infective endocarditis, and on the chemopro-phylaxis and epidemiology of gram-negative infections, especially of the urinary tract.
