KANGAROO The Kangaroo is a common Marsupials from the island of Australia and New Guinea. Marsupials are animals with pouch. They carry their babies in a pouch in the mother’s abdomen. Kangaroos have two strong legs with two long feet. They have a muscular long tail, large ears and smalls head. They have short arms with clawed hands. The soft, wooly fur can be blue, grey, red, black, yellow, or brown, depending on the species. Females have a pouch in which the young live and drink milk. These herbivores (plant-eaters) eat grass, leaves, and roots. They swallow their food without chewing it. Kangaroos need little water, they can go for months without drinking, and they dig their own water wells. These shy animals live about 6 years in the wild and up to 20 in captivity. Most Kangaroos are nocturnal (active at night). Kangaroos can hop up to 74 kilometers per hour and go over 9 meters in one hop. 4

What is the report text? DEFINITION OF REPORT TEXT Report is a text which presents information about something, as it is. It is as a result of systematic observation and analysis.” (Report adalah sebuah teks yang menghadirkan informasi tentang suatu hal secara apa adanya. Teks ini adalah sebagai hasil dari observasi dan analisa secara sistematis.) 5

What is the social function? Report text aims to describe in general based on facts from observations or research and analysis of an object in the form of living things, natural objects, natural phenomenon, social phenomenon, and man-made objects. What are the language features? Present tense, mostly simple present tense. General nouns, e.g. birds, rivers, rainbow, etc. Technical terms, e.g. amphibian, chemical, etc. Relating verbs, e.g. is, am, are, look, seems, etc. Action verbs, e.g. eat, run, etc. 6

Writing Steps - Theme Analysis Starting by creating a text title, whether it will describe an animal, person, thing, or place. -Collecting ideas This can be done by using a mind map (mapping of ideas), tables, or important points. Write only the important points, using commas, dashes, or a crisp. - Separate the ideas of each paragraph From each idea that has been collected, include each idea in a paragraph for writing. - Develop writing based on the points in the paragraph After each point is in its respective paragraph, it will be easier for us to develop the paragraph. The trick is to complete the sentences in the text. Complete it in a neat way of writing. 7

What about the generic structures? Title Classification: This section contains general statements about the phenomena being described, usually in the form of definitions and classifications. Description: This section contains essential facts about the phenomena described. If the phenomenon being described is an animal, the facts include physical characteristics, habitat, food, behavior, life cycle, and movement. If the phenomenon being described is an object, the facts include physical characteristics, parts and functions, uses, prices and features. 9

How about the topic sentence and supporting details? A topic sentence, sometimes at the beginning of a paragraph, that states or suggests the main idea or topic of a passage. Supporting details are specific pieces of information in a piece of writing that support the main idea or the topic sentence. 10

Text 1 Komodo Dragon (1) (Moreover, the dragon is also famous for its ferocious bite, which combines serrated teeth with mysteriously toxic saliva.) Text 2 Spider (1) (These two part is connected by a very thin joint called as pedicle or pedicellus.) (2) (Spiders are eight-legged carnivorous arthropods.) (3) (Spiders have two body parts, the front part and the back part.) (4) (and the back part is called the abdomen or opisthosoma.) (5) (The front part is called cephalothorax or prosoma, this part consists of the head and chest.) 13

Text 3 Bear (1) (Polar Bear have a thick fur to keep them warm to survive North Pole temprature.) (2) (There are only eight species of bears remaining in the world, they are: Brown Bear, Polar Bear, Asian Black Bear, American Black Bear, Sun Bear, Sloth Bear, Spectacled Bear and Giant Panda.) (3) (Although they are carnivore, most of them also consume plants and fruits.) (4) (These bear species are spread around the globe except for the Polar Bear which can only be found in the North Pole.) (5) (Bears are wild carnivorous animals.) 14
