Shirts: Shirts with collars and sleeves must be worn at all times and must not bear any signage or design of an offensive nature. Football Guernseys are not permitted. Footwear: Standard golf footwear only. CLUB MEMBERS TO OBSERVE CORRECT GOLF DRESS CODE AT ALL TIMES. ETIQUETTE AND PRIORITY ON COURSE Taken from the R & A Rules Handbook The Game of Golf 1. Golf is played in a round of 18 (or fewer) holes on a course by striking a ball with a club. Each hole starts with a stroke from the teeing area and ends when the ball is holed on the putting green (or when the Rules otherwise say the hole is completed). For each stroke, the player: a. Plays the course as he or she finds it, and b. Plays the ball as it lies. But there are exceptions where the Rules allow the player to alter conditions on the course and require or allow the player to play the ball from a different place than where it lies. 2. Standards of Player Conduct a. Conduct Expected of All Players All players are expected to play in the spirit of the game by: Acting with integrity – for example, by following the Rules, applying all penalties, and being honest in all aspects of play. Players should always show consideration for other players on the course and should not disturb their play by moving, talking or making unnecessary noise. On the teeing ground, a player should not tee his ball until it is his turn to play. Players should not stand close to or directly behind the ball, or directly behind the hole, when a player is about to play. On the putting green, players should not stand on another player’s line of putt or, when he is making a stroke, cast a shadow over his line of putt. Players should remain on or close to the putting green until all other players in the group have holed out. Taking good care of the course – for example, by replacing divots, smoothing bunkers, repairing ball-marks, and not causing unnecessary damage to the course. There is no penalty under the Rules for failing to act in this way, except that the Committee may disqualify a player for acting contrary to the spirit of the game if it finds that the player has committed serious misconduct. Penalties other than disqualification may be imposed for player misconduct only if those penalties are adopted as part of a Code of Conduct under Rule 1.2b. b. Code of Conduct The Committee may set its own standards of player conduct in a Code of Conduct adopted as a Local Rule. The Code may include penalties for breach of its standards, such as a one-stroke penalty or the general penalty. The Committee may also disqualify a player for serious misconduct in failing to meet the Code’s standards.
3. Playing by the Rules You are expected to recognize when you have breached a Rule and to be honest in applying your own penalties. You may ask for help with the Rules from a referee or the Committee, but if help is not available in a reasonable time you must play on and raise the issue later. There are times when you must make estimates, such as the spot where to replace your ball, the point where your ball crossed the edge of a penalty area or when taking relief under the Rules. You are expected to consider all available information and to make a reasonable judgment in the circumstances. A penalty applies to you when a breach of a Rule results from your own actions, the actions of your caddie, or the actions of another person acting with your authority or knowledge. Penalties are meant to cancel out any potential advantage. There are three main penalty levels: a. One-Stroke Penalty: Applies in both match play and stroke play. b. General Penalty: Loss of hole in match play and a two-stroke penalty in stroke play. c. Disqualification: Applies both in match play and stroke play. 4. Safety Player’s should ensure that no one is standing close by or in a position to be hit by the club, the ball or any stones, pebbles, twigs or the like when they make a stroke or practice swing. Wait until the players in front are out of range. Players should always alert green staff nearby or ahead when they are about to make a stroke that might endanger them. If your ball is heading in a direction where there is a danger of it hitting someone, shout a warning immediately. The traditional word of warning is “fore!”. 5. Priority on the Course Unless otherwise determined by the Committee, priority on the course is determined by a group’s pace of play. Any group playing a whole round is entitled to pass a group playing a shorter round. The term “group” includes a single player. It should be remembered that consideration should be shown to others on the course at all times. 6. Pace of Play The Rules of Golf Guide has highlighted that it is wrong to think that players are the cause of all issues relating to pace of play, but, nevertheless, the behavior of the players on the course also needs to be examined. There is no doubt that one group, or even one player, can create issues for all of the other players on the course by demonstrating poor etiquette in relation to pace of play. a. Being Aware of Position on the Course Players need to be aware of their group’s position on the course, and how they are impacting on the pace of play of other groups. The basic advice in this regard is that if a group keeps up with the group in front, the players in that group will rarely be accused of slow play. Players should always be looking forward to ensure that they are maintaining a good position in relation to the group in front, for example, making sure that they do not have an empty par 4 hole in between them. If ground has been lost on the group in front, then all of the players in the group should take responsibility for making up that ground as quickly as possible. It is inevitable that there will be holes that take longer to play than would normally be the case, either due to bad play or some other delay, but the key is for the all the players in that group to ensure that the group gets back into position promptly. The self-assessed pace of play control system (see Appendix I) can assist in ensuring that players take responsibility for making up lost ground. b. Various Actions Players Can Take to Improve Pace of Play
i. Position of Bags or Carts When players are approaching the green, golf bags or carts should be positioned to allow for quick and efficient movement off the green towards the next tee. ii. Marking Score Cards While it is strongly recommended that players remain at the green to watch the other players in their group hole out, the marking of score cards should not be done at the green if this may delay play of the group behind. Mark score cards on the way to or at the next tee. That said, the player who is first to play from the next tee should play first and then mark the card. iii. Playing a Provisional Ball. Ball searches and lost balls are a feature of golf, but they do cause delay. However, the delay can be significantly minimized if the player whose ball might be in danger of being lost has played a provisional ball. A player should play a provisional ball if they think that their ball may be out of bounds or if there is any possibility that it may be lost, other than when it is clearly in a water hazard. The result of playing a provisional ball is that the player will not have to return to the spot of the previous stroke to put another ball into play. Another practical result is that often, having played a provisional ball, the player is less concerned with taking the full three minutes to search for the original ball in the knowledge that the hole can be completed with the provisional ball. iv. Watching the Flight of the Ball Carefully. The problem of lost balls can be significantly reduced if all players in a group make a conscious effort to watch each other’s shots and their own shots as carefully and as often as possible. This will result in less searching time and fewer lost balls. v. 'Ready Golf'. As referenced in the Management Practices section above, playing “ready golf” is permissible in stroke play and can improve pace of play. Even if the management at a course has not made a request for players to play “ready golf”, players in stroke play can agree to do so. vi. Choosing an Appropriate Form of Play. The vast majority of golf is not overseen by a committee or other administrator, which means it is the golfers themselves who decide how many players will be in their groups and what the form of play will be. The choices that are made will impact on how long it takes to play. vii. Choosing an appropriate time to play If golfers want to play quickly, they should attempt to get one of the first starting times of the day and set the pace or choose a quieter time of the day when the course may be under-utilized. 7. Care of the Course Players should avoid causing damage to the course by removing divots when taking practice swings or by hitting the head of a club into the ground, whether in anger or for any other reason. Players should ensure that no damage is done to the putting green when putting down bags or the flagstick. In order to avoid damaging the hole, players and caddies should not stand too close to the hole and should take care during the handling of the flagstick and the removal of a ball from the hole. Players should carefully repair any divot holes made by them and any damage to the putting green made by the impact of a ball (whether or not made by the player himself). Players should not lean on their clubs when on the putting green, particularly when removing the ball from the hole. The flagstick should be properly replaced in the hole before the players leave the putting green. Before leaving a bunker, players should carefully fill up and smooth over all holes and footprints made by them and any nearby made by others. If a rake is within reasonable proximity of the bunker, the rake should be used for this purpose. Local notices regulating the movement of golf carts should be strictly observed.
20 MUST KNOW RULES OF GOLF CHANGES From January 2019 1. Drop from knee height (NOT shoulder height) 2. Measure the area to drop in with the longest club in your bag (except a putter) 3. Drop in and play from the relief area 4. When dropping back-on-the-line, your ball cannot be played from nearer the hole than your chosen reference point 5. Time to search – 3 minutes (NOT 5 minutes) 6. If you accidentally move your ball when searching for it, replace it without penalty 7. No penalty for a double hit – it only counts as one stroke 8. No penalty if your ball hits you or your equipment accidentally after a stroke 9. No penalty if your ball strikes the flagstick when you have chosen to leave it in the hole 10. Spike mark and other shoe damage on the putting green can be repaired 11. Ball accidentally moved on putting green – no penalty and replace 12. Ball marked, lifted and replaced on putting green is moved by wind to another position – replace ball on the original spot 13. Penalty areas replace water hazards, and you can move loose impediments, ground your club and take practice swings in penalty areas without penalty, just as you can on the fairway or in the rough 14. You can’t take relief from a penalty area unless you are at least 95% certain your ball is in the penalty area 15. In bunkers you can move loose impediments 16. In bunkers you cannot touch the sand with your club in the area right in front of or right behind your ball, during your backswing or in taking practice swings 17. Free relief is allowed if your ball is embedded on the fairway or in the rough (but “embedded” means that part of your ball is below the level of the ground) 18. Unplayable ball in bunker – extra option to drop outside the bunker for 2 penalty strokes 19. You cannot have your caddie or your partner standing behind you once you begin taking your stance 20. Canadian: 3/8 of combined handicap. Straight Foursomes: 1/2 of combined handicap. PINEHURST Pinehurst involves two players both teeing off on a hole and then playing their second shots with their partner's ball. They then chose which ball they prefer and play proceeds with alternate strokes. If Player B hit the second shot of the chosen ball, Player A will hit the next shot The team’s handicap is determined by taking 3/8 of the aggregate handicaps of both partners. CANADIAN FOURSOMES Canadian Foursomes is played with a partner and both players tee off on all holes. The players then decide together which ball is in the best position and the other ball is taken out of play. If Player A hits the selected ball from the tee, then Player B will hits the next shot or vice versa. Play continues on an alternate basis until the hole is completed. Incurring a penalty shot does not affect the order of play. The handicap of each team is calculated by taking 3/8 of the aggregate of team members' individual handicaps. The handicap of each player must be shown on the card. Since Canadian Foursomes is a Stroke event, it is simply scored that way on the card showing a gross and net score. The team with the lowest score is the winner. STRAIGHT FOURSOMES Foursomes is an event in which two players play a stroke competition as partners using an single ball and alternating shots. The players also alternate tee shots (e.g. if Player A tees off on the odd numbered holes Player B must tee off on the even numbered holes. If either player incurs a penalty shot it does not alter the order of play. This event may also be played in mixed teams of male and female, in which case all players tee off on their respective tee blocks when teeing off.
