FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK “We want education by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded and by which one can stand on one’s feet” - Swami Vivekananda Education offered in Army Public School, Delhi Cantt aims at empowering students to become critical thinkers, problem solvers and leaders with discerning minds. In the twenty first Century, education does not mean academic excellence only, it means transforming every student into a self-reliant and contributing member of the society. Keeping this objective in mind, Army Public school, Delhi cantt provides an amalgam of scholastic and co scholastic education. “The more complex the world becomes, the more creative we need to be to meet its challenges”. School education in this institution focuses on the 4Cs i.e., Creativity, Critical thinking, Communication and Collaboration. Hence the focus is on skills rather than on marks. The school hosts a plethora of events and activities to develop these skills and offer enough opportunities for students to identify and hone their talents. Globalization and digital technology have transformed the world. APS DC makes sure that the children are trained to keep abreast with the latest in all fields and enable and empower them to sail smoothly in this VUCA world. “If we teach today’s students as we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow,” -John Dewey, American philosopher, and educator. Our curriculum and almanac are planned in such a way that the children engage themselves in experiential learning. Children look forward to attend school as it facilitates learning through activities. Sports play a pivotal role in shaping children’s personality. FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK ‘’Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from indomitable will’’. Mahatma Gandhi. Army Public school, Delhi cant aims at preparing the present generation with the skills, intelligence and the wisdom to emerge as future leaders. Encouraging students to work together on a creative challenge, and allowing them to reflect on the learnings they take from the exercise, will help them better understand what it means to be a part of an increasingly collaborative and connected world. The institution provides ample opportunities with an objective to help them learn through their strengths. The school does not focus on just offering learning experience. The eminence of the institution is attained through the achievements of the children. Horizon espouses the school spirit of achieving excellence through team efforts and collaborative spirit. As Helen Keller rightly said, “Believe. No pessimist ever discovered the secrets of the stars, or sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new heaven to the human spirit.” The students of APS DC are encouraged to believe in themselves. Belief leads to confidence and confidence results in success. We are proud to showcase the stories of success, triumph and glory in all spheres of education. The institution echoes the philosophy ‘’Success each day should be judged by the seeds sown, not the harvest reaped.” The success of the institution lies in instilling the values of hard work and honest efforts in the minds of young children to face life with grit and determination. STUDENT EDITORIAL Horizon”- the term, encompasses a place where the sky meets the Earth! It is synonymous with endless experiences and innumerable possibilities which our magazine symbolizes.“ “We are not at the end but at the beginning of a new physics. But, whatever we find, there will always be new horizons continually awaiting us” Michio Kaku After two irksome years of online classes, we were all glad to be back in school After that one scary phase of sitting in front of the screen all day long, adjusting to normal classes was cumbersome. I won’t deny that, but it also was something we all looked forward to. Initially it was hard to adjust, but one factor tha remained constant was the unstinted support of the institution. The schoo encouraged the students to unleash their innate talents and helped them achieve their goals. Holistic development is an important aspect of school life hence we were given a wide horizon of opportunities and support in fields other than academics! With various interhouse and interschool competitions and zonal events, we all got to discover and nurture our talents ! Be it debate or quizzes, we excelled in them with flying colours. The institution stands for inclusiveness as is clearly depicted by the innumerable equal opportunities provided to the special and the differently-abled children, putting them at par with everyone else . At every single step,,our mentors being our guiding light showed us the road to success. All these experiences have been an integral part of this enriching voyage, APS Delhi Cantt , with its welcoming nature, feels like a home away from home having inspired all of us to cherish each and every moment. We also inculcated In us the “Will to Win” and motivated us to always give our best in this journey called “life”! This magazine encapsulates the feelings and journeys of various DeCasians inscribed with ink, as we give you a glimpse of how we’ve expanded ou “horizons” and looked beyond the same! We, the proud and robust DeCasians , hereby, take you through our enriching academic journey through this magazine “HORIZON” . Hope you enjoy flipping through the pages it as much as we did compiling it !! -Aarushi Singh XII B

In a World full of misery, Happiness is Utopian Aiming for world peace is the most perfect idea, just as perfect as Pegasus and unicorns. But let me break the news to you my friend PERFECT DOES NOT EXIST! And this is the reality of life. We have witnessed humanity’s long history of war and violence .Numerous books, articles and scientific studies have also found that humans are naturally programmed to be hostile, contentious and combative. For instance the renowned psychiatrist Sigmund Freud advanced the theory when he asserted that all people possess a reserve of aggressive energy that manifests naturally as violence. Even in nature we observe aggressive impulses among various species in animal kingdom so even though humans have evolved and have the complex reasoning and cognitive abilities, much of our innate basic impulses are similar to those of the other species. Humans find one reason or the other for conflicts... If not for survival they fight for resources if not for resources they kill for greed and if not for greed the war is for power. We witnessed 1st World War in 1914 then 2nd World War in 1939 and numerous civil wars, internal disturbances, Iran Iraq wars, Gulf war in 1990, disintegration of USSR in 1991, disputes over territories, water, oil and various other resources. And of course we can't forget the brutal partition of our own motherland in 1947.Hence the idea of absolute and complete world peace goes against our very nature We as humans have a tendency to be seduced by the need for power and the greed for more and this is aptly portrayed by the ongoing catastrophic conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Even within a democratic country like India we are facing border disputes between Assam and Nagaland. Well are we really naïve enough to believe that 195 countries all over the world would follow the same path and have a consensus on diverse issues I believe that if we have to live in peace, we have to defend ourselves.... and if we have to defend ourselves then we have to be prepared for war. Therefore War is inevitable!! 26 Vishakha Jiswar 12 G
If I were a Brave heart…… Gallantry award winners give up and come out of their comfort zone for the nation so that all the other citizens of their nation sleep soundly. They are a personification of sacrifice, love and compassion and always keep the Nation’s flag flying high! Every Gallantry award winner stays in our heart forever and remains embedded in our memories One such braveheart was Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal who displayed the highest degree of valour during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971 and was awarded the Param Vir Chakra for displaying exemplary devotion and bravery. He has lit a spark in the minds and hearts of the youth who are inspired to join the forces and serve the nation If I ever get an opportunity to live the life of 2/Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal then the safety, honour and welfare of my nation would always come first. I would always try to keep abreast with the latest and most advanced warfare tactics and use my leadership and intellectual qualities to lead my team whenever my nation needs me. Just like 2/Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, even I would protect my nation with complete devotion and dedication. The joy of being a disciplined and well-organized soldier and protecting the nation and its citizens is just unimaginable. Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal has truly given a boost to my dream of joining the armed forces. He being my role model ,I will ensure that I live up to the ideals of a brave heart and follow his footsteps in making my nation stronger and safer.. Jai Hind ! Rohan Hazarika 11 G
THE MIND OF AN OVERTHINKER The sun glimmering over the light-blue sea… As I enjoy the calmness of the waves and hope and mirth within me. Still far from my destination, I still have a long distance to fare, But I know that one day, I will surely be there. But alas! Why is the sky turning grey? Why are the waves so angry, as if looking for a prey! And here I am, in my tiny boat of faith, clutching on to the planks, trying not to be knocked off aboard. Oh my! Two hands, humongous and scaly, The next moment, all I could feel was the coldness of the water And those hypothermic hands, as I fall deeper, the last ray of hope, vanishing……no matter how hard I try to break free, I am going deeper…and deeper and deeper…………….. “Not a cloud in the sky, got the sun in my eyes and I won’t be surprised if it’s a dream” sang I, as I sat back into my tiny little boat of faith. The waves were calmly dancing in the glimmering sunlight of hope and everything seemed to be just wonderful, just so simple. I could see my destination, though I was still miles away, and it all did seem pretty much like a dream, “Ah! Mesmerizing views, nothing bad can even happen!” , or so I thought… As I was appreciating the beauty of my life, like a bolt out of the blue, grey clouds of self-doubt started overpowering the now smoky sky, coloured with the hues of overthinking, which was a few moments back so heavenly. “Oh my!” cried I, as the uproar of the waves , empowered by dread and agitation, gradually started increasing. The line – “ and I won’t be surprised if it’s a dream” still going on inside my head, seemed like a paradox. As the despair grew, so did my tries of staying aboard . I was clutching hard onto faith but alas! The next thing I felt was the cold waves engulfing me as I was thrown into the deep blue waters, of my depressing thoughts. I was drowning…..falling deeper……as the last ray of hope disappeared…..i was just going down, deeper and deeper and deeper…………. Arushi 12 B

Mental Health Being healthy is being free from any physical , emotional , psychological and mental illness . All of us always talk about our physical health and constantly work on our diet and fitness regime to increase our immunity and to keep physically fit .We rarely talk of our mental health and do the least to keep ourselves mentally healthy. What is mental health? Mental health not only means being free from any stress or depression but also includes keeping one’s mind and thoughts healthy .To me , my mental health is happiness inside and outside. So, what should we do to keep ourselves mentally healthy? To begin with we can follow the following techniques to remain mentally healthy . Be in the present-Many a times we keep on discussing and reminding ourselves of the events or incidents that had happened in the past or we keep on worrying about future .This leaves us worried and depressed . We should instead practice to keep our thoughts and mind in the present situation .This will really be helpful and not only increase our efficiency but also improve our mental health. Change it or just enjoy it : Sometimes certain happenings in our life are not according to what we want .We try to change these situations. The ability to mould all the situations according to you requires conviction and fine communication skills .Try to develop these skills in you .But if you are unable to change or mould the situations according to you ,it is always better to be a part of the change and enjoy it. Be a learner always: In the rapidly evolving era ,we need to keep ourselves updated .For this, we need to keep on learning and sometimes unlearn and relearn so that we do not feel left out . Be optimistic : Always try to see the brighter side of the happenings which will positively affect your mental health..Teach your mind to think positive and be positive. Do your best but expect the least : Most of our negative thoughts are because of people or relations not meeting our expectations. It is always better to give your best to all relations but not to expect any returns. Also don’t pay heed to what others say or think about you Spare some time for not doing or thinking anything : This will refresh your mind and thoughts. Even the mind needs time to rejuvenate . In the end ,I would like to say that mental health is much more important than appearances , to-do lists ,or people’s perceptions .It’s OK not to be OK sometimes. So relax, refresh and enjoy your journey of life. Pratibha Mehta PRT
Inclusive Education - A Core Value of APSDC Inclusive education is not an experiment to be tested but a human right and a value to be followed as inclusion in education means ultimately inclusion in the society. Acclimatising to this value, we have transformed our school into an inclusive quality education hub where learners with disabilities are provided with the support, equity of opportunities & a barrier free environment for their holistic development. The journey of transforming APSDC into an inclusive quality education hub has been riveting under the vision of our prescient principal Dr. Neetu Kapoor and the inclusive education team. In this journey of invigorating an inclusive ecosystem in the school, we have built the infrastructure i.e. a resource room, an occupational therapy room, a study center, health & wellness room, a multi skill foundation room and sensory park through which, the special educators and counsellors, give needs based remedial interventions and socio-emotional counselling to students with disabilities. We have also developed a core inclusive model for the school, conducted various sensitisation and capacity building workshops for teachers to adept them in screening & identifying students for disabilities, adapting their pedagogies through differentiated instructions for creating a multisensory learning environment in the classrooms, collaborating with special educators on making Individualised Education Plans (IEPs) as well as adapting & altering methods of assessments for Children with special needs. Empowering and collaborating with parents of children with disabilities has been integral throughout this process for which a parent support group has been formulated. The implementation of this ecosystem has made a significant impact in the lives of children with special needs through improved participation in curricular and co-curricular activities. Our students have participated & won laurels in the Special Olympics as well as other sports events. We’re devoted to reaching and breaking the milestones of inclusion. We’re not only going to keep upgrading the inclusive education wing but also empowering students with disabilities to adept them with employability skills, social & functional skills, as well as working on their physical and mental health. LESSONS FROM THE COVID OUTBREAK If someone asks me what did you learn from this pandemic I would simply say: It taught me to love, to care, to respect, to help, to introspect. Though this pandemic has killed innocent people but we’ve also learned a a lot from it. I’ve been thinking a lot - what is it that will come out of all this? The answer is clear Equality! This situation has shown us that we are all the same regardless of our religion, culture, customs, or whether we are poor or rich! The virus shows no prejudice. It connected us and showed us the impact of humanity. It reminded us of who we are. There is an old saying “THERE IS GOOD IN EVERY EVIL”. We finally got time to develop a hobby, I too am learning how to code which I always wanted. It also made all of us learn the importance of personal hygiene and keeping health as priority. But above all, this Pandemic reminded us to value what we have. “They say there is light at the end of the tunnel, And I could see the light! Well how can we forget our new found superstars, no I am not talking about some superstar or some sports icon, I am talking about doctors yes! who gave their lives to save us, so that we can spend time with our families. So I would like to end up with the words of sir Peter Sheppard “We do not heal in isolation but in togetherness” So “LET’S BE MINDFUL OF OUR EARTH AND IT WILL BE KIND TO US. THERE IS NO RAINBOW WITHOUT RAIN. REMEMBER THAT.” So “UNITY” is the lesson that we have learnt through this Pandemic “UNITY IS POWER” and Power lies in us!! NAME- Tamish Kumar CLASS- 9 D, APSDC

DEAR PARENTS O my dear parents, I love you a lot, And I must thank god, for the parents I have got. You are the ones who understand me better, In whose heart I take shelter. You always keep your eyes on me to care, And you are the ones with whom I like to share. There is no doubt that you are the best, Who always work hard for me, and the rest. There are no words to praise you, And everything you give me has a mark of goodness of you. No one in the world can take your place, As you are the ones who support me in every step of life’s race. Every happiness of mine is incomplete without you, Because every moment of mine is only for you. I always see you become upset when you scold me, And I know this happens because your hearts are connected with me. You are the most valuable teachers who always guide me to walk the right way. Dear parents, no one in the world is like you, The only thing I want to say is that I love you. ANUSHKA KUMARI , 9th E
DILEMMA OF A WORKING WOMEN She is bold, she is beautiful; she is caring…A wonderful wife, outstanding friend, nurturing daughter, adorable sister, nurturing mother. Yes, we are talking about woman. A “one man army” behind all of us, ''. Traditionally the Indian women have been home makers. The status of women was always one grade down to men in the society. That’s the reason 79% of Indian women don’t even seek work. But, now in modern India with literacy, awareness of equal rights and the growing technology a large number of women are stepping out of their homes to work. Society becomes judgemental about working women as they are incapable of balancing both personal and professional front. However I believe that working women are positive role models for their children, instilling in them the idea that women’s role can include a thriving career apart from domestic tasks. Infact ,children of working mothers tend to be more independent, accommodative and adjust to time and situations more easily as compared to others. Since working mothers fall short of time, they substitute quantity time for the quality one. Children learn to respect their efforts and understand the value of devoting time to family while pursuing their dreams. However homemakers should not be regarded any less than working women. The comparison itself is absurd. Women altogether shouldn’t be questioned on their role as mothers. They would do anything but compromise with this role. A very important contribution of working women bring is financial stability which has a significant influence on the upbringing of children. Having both parents working ensures a comfortable and financially secure life which empowers them to take up the career path of their choice. In the end, I just want to say “Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change” Vinayak Srikkant 10 D
DEGRADATION OF MORAL VALUES IN TODAY’S YOUTH Young ones when nourished properly can grow like a huge redwood tree but if ignored or neglected can erupt like a volcano. India is considered to be a young country as approximately 600 million people in India are younger than 25 years of age. The youth play a pivotal role in shaping the socio-economic structure of any nation. Values that are predominantly held and pursued today include dishonesty, disrespect and an increased interest in the pursuit of injustice and other crimes just to acquire wealth. Therefore a rise in the crimes involving youths has become a matter of serious concern. Modern societies are experiencing the wave of corruption driven by the “get rich quick syndrome”. Today’s youth are devoid of basic moral values. Our greed for material gains, obsession for possession and hunger for higher position is dragging us deep down towards the dungeons of moral decadence and degeneration. Financial independence and economic growth have made us more rebellious and uncompromising. Nowadays, Moral values like simplicity, sensitivity and sympathy can only be found in quotations. Each and every act of ours is guided by some selfish motive. Today our love is not unconditional pure love rather it is directly proportional to the bank balance and the property the other person owns. We belong to the land of Shravan Kumar and Eklavya; the land of BHISHMA PITAHAMAH; where supreme sacrifices were made to keep a word of honor and truthfulness. What a paradox! It is the bitter truth that there are thousands of poignant tales of residents of old age homes; that tell us the sordid reality of how the young generation is turning a blind eye to their parent’s needs. Young India just sees parents as a mere obligation. And we all have heard stories about children and grandchildren hitting their parents and grandparents for preventing them from using mobile phones haven’t we? . How can we ignore such horrid facts? This is a grim reality and bitter truth that today’s youth is becoming morally weak but the question is who is responsible for this moral degradation? Social environment, peer pressure or our education system? Our education system, unfortunately, helps us prosper economically but does not emphasize on enhancing our social and emotional stability. Due to this lack of moral and social stability, youth is becoming victims of all the drug abuse and violence. To make youth conscious about such evils, education based on moral and ethical values should be provided to them so that they become rational human beings, and not to turn monsters in the form of humans . . Moral values should be part of our practical curriculum only then the youths can be the agents of change in their societies and become “light in perceived darkness” Jerry Springer once said “ We all are born as empty vessels and it is the moral values that shapes us!” Let us help ourselves to fill our empty vessels with moral values. Yes we need to change ourselves and the change begins with me and us. Name – Rohan Kumar Hazra Class – 11G

MY DEMONS Our inner demons are what we call the devils. We all have these demons within, They say face your inner demons ; Own your responsibility. Ego is a Demon bigger than anything in this world. We must fight our Demons to bring out the angels in us. We must all face our Demons sooner or later. A devil craves chaos; angel seeks peace. Never give an opportunity to the Demon in you. Let it not overcome and devour you. Don’t let your Demons control you… Akanksha Patel 9E WOMEN EMPOWERMENT I am not a burden It’s you, who considers me so, Through these orthodox thoughts You have made me feel so. Am I? Things are getting rough, a tad-bit tough, Making me sweat and whine... I am always complaining 'Bout what's mine! ENOUGH!! Justifying, ENOUGH!! explaining, Damn! Even, enough's saying: Yeah, it's about time, I let go... The Little-BIG Insecurities, The Figments of Fear, That I somehow hold dear! The Chip on my Shoulders, Crushing me with Boulders! Noooo! Am not gonna cry, Though, I don't understand why! Like a shell, they shielded me... What's wrong, What happened?! How did we end up estranged! Whyyyy did things have to CHANGE! Uhmm yeah, I've noticed, In muddy water, grows lotus... Though, I still don't know, Why or How!? It doesn't matter, Only that the shell's too short now! okay wow, So , Am I Growing Somehow?! Selfie Obsession Stand well back and leave me alone, I’ve got it covered with my smartphone, I’ve taken my own image one more time, For my social media profile is on the line, I’m showing my followers how unique I am, I’m a selfie taker with a positive plan. I am not quoting a rhyme but the reality of present generation. I want to raise the curtain to the world where we only hear the sound of click click click ! Before I put forth my views on this very hard-hitting subject – “Selfie”: A new obsession I’d like to say that selfies can be good, but obsession never. Selfie with family Enjoying with my friends Even I wouldn’t mind posting one. But, Selfie with a dead body Selfies at funeral How disappointing Expression of emotions is always right But what about Inhumanity in disguise?? Nowadays we spend more time reflecting on our selfie, than we reflect on ourselves. We’re living in a world of self-interest and self-promotion, where we share all our best bits, but leave out the emotion. We edit and exaggerate, we crave for adulation, We pretend we don’t notice the social isolation Don’t give in to a life where you follow the hype, Give people your love, don’t give them your like. You’re too old for this, You’re too young for that. That’s for kids, not” women” of your age, That’s for adults, not “kids” of your age. I am sometimes too young for something, And sometimes I am too old. I am too young to make my own decisions, So it’s probably high time that I take decisions on my own. I don’t have milk teeth, Nor do I have the wisdom tooth I am too old for slides, swings and see-saws, I am too young for partying, clubbing and shots. Who am I? I sometimes wonder Not a woman, not a girl I am just a teenager Searching for a reply !!!!!!! Aditi Gupta IX ‘E’
