THE HARE WITH MANY FRIENDS Illustrated by Sonam Tobgay

Once there was a hare, and she loved making friends. She had many friends. She was very proud of it, thinking everyone liked her.

But one day, she heard the hounds were hunting hares. The hare was scared and went to ask for help from her friends.

So, she went to the horse. The hare asked the horse to carry her on his back to escape from the hounds. But the horse refused her, saying that he had important work to do. He said, “I am sure that other friends would help you.”

She then asked the bull to chase away the hounds with his horns. The bull replied, “I am very sorry, but I have a date with a lady. You should ask your friend, the goat.”

Then she ran to the goat for help. The goat also didn’t help her and said, “My back is small and bony and might harm you. The sheep will help you for sure.”

So she went to the sheep and told him about the hounds. The sheep said, “I am sorry, I cannot help you today because I heard that the hounds eat sheep. But I will help you next time.”

Lastly, she went to the calf. The calf was her last hope. But the calf did not help her because he was young and did not like to take responsibility.

By that time, the hounds were near, and the hare could not think of anything, so she ran as fast she could. Fortunately, she escaped.

She learned her lesson, and after that, she never made friends. Moral: He that has many friends has no friends
