The goat academy Members’ Handbook BYS VYKEN EVENTS Bys Vyken Events was formed in 2016. The idea behind the company was to promote Cornwall in more of a light than just “we all surf, eat pasties and argue about bloody jam”, along with the physical act of exploring the heritage of this beautiful county of ours, both coastally and inland, from mining heritage to smuggling and piracy and pilgrims. Runners aren’t always aware of where they run. The average race is just a race. We don’t provide just “races”. We provide an experience. Something that gives its audience a chance to learn, earn and be a part of something truly unforgettably special. Our events and running experiences are the most bespoke around. We showcase our love for our home through our love for running and event directing. Whether it’s a physical event or a virtual event, you won’t find anything generic about us. Born in Cornwall, made in Cornwall, placed on the map by you, our loyal and supportive runners. MEMBERSHIP Signing up and showcasing the desire to find the biggest hills and run them repeatedly! The goat academy Members’ Handbook BENEFITS Something to aim for and achieve in a world where a chance to be able to do and achieve anything currently seems further away by the day. An opportunity to pursue the ability to get better at hills and be better and stronger than you used to be, both physically and mentally. Page 8 of 39
The goat academy Members’ Handbook INSPIRATION Quotes can offer up a bit of encouragement or a starting point, push, or reaffirmation of a way forward. Here are just a few to remind us of some basics: If you can, help others, if you cannot do that, at least do not harm them. If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” The person who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The person who walks alone is likely to find himself in places no one has ever seen before.” Whatever gets your goat gets your attention. Whatever gets your attention gets your time. Whatever gets your time gets you. Whatever gets you becomes your master. Take care, stay safe and don’t let things get your goat – you are the goat! Page 9 of 39
The goat academy Members’ Handbook We are all different, we all take different roads, we all achieve different things, but not matter where we go, we take a little of each other everywhere. Page 10 of 39

Proofage The goat academy Members’ Handbook Scapegoat activity]. National Geographic suggest that Silly Billy a herd constitutes a minimum of 20. This is a very, very rare sight to see goateers in such numbers and of course, under pandemic restrictions and into the future we may see the word ‘Herd’ be forgotten and lost as goateers will only be seen running together as they run past each other in opposite directions on a lonely coast path. The evidence you submit to confirm your submissions for activities. When you manage to finish work early and get some cheeky unplanned goateering done. Execution of Goateering and forgetting to start your watch. Page 17 of 39

The goat academy Members’ Handbook MY FAVOURITE HILL Some Goat Academy members tell us about their favourite hills….. Goateer Abi Mackay name: What do you I don’t...... They call it a Royale with cheese call your hill? Somewhere on Dartmoor Location: It isn’t..... hate them all Why is it your favourite? Goateer Adrian Brown name: What do you Ruses Mill Hill (Well, usually I call it pain!) call your hill? Location: Between Higher Larrick and Ruses Mill It’s local, it’s horribly steep for good Why is it your feeterage, it’s got some nice views and a favourite? lovely river at the bottom where I stop for a rest Goateer Claire Barlow name: What do you I call my hill the big one. call your hill? Location: From the bottom of Kirland just outside Bodmin to the top of the Beacon. Why is it your It's the closest biggest hill I’ve got to where I favourite? live. Its broken down into 4 parts, first bit is called 'another fecker', the next is the road that joins the next bit, the third part is called 'up to Page 33 of 39
The goat academy Members’ Handbook the style' which is my go to hill rep session and the last bit is up through a squishy field, over another style and up to the top of the Beacon. You are rewarded with lovely views Goateer Debbie Gibbs name: What do you 2 mile hill call your hill? Location: A391 Bypass out of St Austell Why is it your It’s on my doorstep (well we live halfway). It is favourite? near enough a two mile hill broken up into five segments by roundabouts. Useful for goating, hill reps and speed work. Goateer David William J name: What do you My favourite climb is Porthgwarra to Gwennap call your hill? Head Location: Porthgwarra, St Levan Why is it your It's because it's the first place on the south favourite? section of the SWCP that you can see Longships Lighthouse. It's my favourite lighthouse. I am a lighthouse nerd and have the SW grid ref of it tattooed on the back if my neck. Gwennap Head is exactly 5K away from Land's End and the path on the headland looks like the surface of the moon. It's actually very similar looking to the path before the drop in the Kynance Cove 40 miles south of it. I was married at Land's End and we had a complete view of Longships on a rainy day and Gwennap Head (in fact that whole last part to Land's End) always reminds me how lucky I am Page 34 of 39
The goat academy Members’ Handbook to have Sal. So even though it's a twat of a climb to get up there, you're rewarded with being able to not only see Longships and Carn Bras (the rock that the lighthouse sits on), but you can also see The Lizard Point and The Lands End Hotel from the same spot. The climb to Gwennap Head just makes me realise that even though the view gives me the realisation of how incredibly small we all are compared to the rest of the universe, it also makes me realise how big your life can be with a little bit of love in it from those who matter most. Goateer Sharon Hambley name: What do you Hill to Temple Church call your hill? Location: Temple Church, Bodmin Moor Why is it your My selection of hills has changed since Goat1 but favourite? mainly because of the tighter restrictions. My favourite this time has good elevation and is in a beautiful and peaceful part of the countryside Page 35 of 39

The goat academy Members’ Handbook FAQs Question Answer Why am I having trouble Our event tech guru, Adrian is signing in? only a message away on our Facebook page. Does it have to be Strava? No, but a GPS device that shows the full distance and full elevation is needed to prove you did it. Do I have to wear my number No, but some people that on every run? choose to laminate them so that they don’t get torn or disintegrate in rubbish weather. If I do the most miles, will I win? No. The challenge is the completed elevation in the least amount of miles that wins. Is only running allowed? No, you can walk and you can use a treadmill but other modes of transport (e.g. cycling) are not allowed. Page 37 of 39
