POPULAR SPORTS IN POLAND

ALPINISM 1

Alpinism, known also as mountaineering or mountain climbing, is the sport that involves climbing high mountains. One of the varieties of mountain climbing is himalaism in which Polish climbers have achieved many successes. The most famous Polish alpinists: - Jerzy Kukuczka, - Krzysztof Wielicki, - Wanda Rutkiewicz, - Adam Bielicki, - Artur Hajzer 2

ATHLETICS 3

Athletics is a group of sporting events that involves competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking Disciplines: - Marathone, - Running, - Racewalking, - Jumps (long, triple high and pole vault), - Throwing (discus, hammer, javelin, shot put), - Combined track and field events (pentathlon, heptathlon, decathlon) The most recognizable Polish athletes: - Anita Włodarczyk (hammer throw), - Tomasz Majewski (shot put), - Kamila Skolimowska (hammer throw), - Robert Korzeniowski (racewalking), - Anna Rogowska (pole vault), - Paweł Fajdek (hammer throw), - Irena Szewińska (running, long jump), 4

CLIMBING 5

Climbing, is a sport in which a person wants to reach the top of some objects: natural like mountains or artificial like climbing walls. The person can only use his or her strength: legs, hands or a different part of the body. The most famous competitions are: - IFSC World Cup and Championships, - Olympic Games (since 2021). The most famous Polish climbers: - Aleksandra Mirosław (World Record Holder for Speed Climbing), - Aleksandra and Natalia Kałucka, - Marcin Dzieński (World Champion from 2016) 6

FOOTBALL 7

Football , known in Poland as “piłka noż na”, is a game in which two opposing teams (11 players each) try to score a goal against their opponent. There are several football leagues in Poland and the most important is the top league. Poland is also represented at international events such as the FIFA World Cup. The greatest achievement of the Polish national team: The third place in the FIFA World Cup in 1974 and in 1982. The most notable players: - Robert Lewandowski, - Jakub Błaszczykowski, - Wojciech Szczęsny, - Łukasz Piszczek, - Zbigniew Boniek 8

HANDBALL 9

Handball is about passing a ball using hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the opposing team by two teams of seven players. A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes, and the team that scores more goals wins. The most famous tournaments: World Championship, Olympic Games, Summer Olympic, Asian Olympic, Common Wealth Games. In 2015 Polish team was third in the World Championships. The most famous Polish players: - Sławomir Szmal, - Karol Bielecki, - Kinga Grzyb, - Karolina Kudłacz-Gloc. 10

RACEWALKING 11

Racewalking - the competitive sport of racing at a fast walk while maintaining continuous foot contact with the ground and keeping the supporting leg straight. Distances: - 20 km, - 50 km, - Paris-Colmar walking competition, 450 - 500 km, - Indoor races - 3000 m and 5000 m. The most famous Polish walkers: - Robert Korzeniowski, - Grzegorz Sudoł, - Agnieszka Dygacz, - Beniamin Kuciński - Katarzyna Zdziebło, 12

SAILING 13

Sailing includes various competitive sailing formats like yachting, kite surfing or windsurfing that are sanctioned through various sailing federations and yacht clubs. Sailors can race in a fleet of sailing craft, individually or in pairs or teams. The most famous regattas: - Cowes Week, - Volvo Ocean Race, - IQFOIL Sailing World Championships The most famous Polish sailors are: - Mateusz Kusznierewicz (olympic gold medal 1996 and bronze 2004), - Jolanta Ogar and Agnieszka Skrzypulec (olimpic silver medal 2020), - Zofia Noceti-Klepacka (olimpic bronze medal 2012), - Przemysław Miarczynski (olimpic bronze medal 2012) 14

SKI JUMPING 15

Ski jumping , sport in which competitors try to achieve the furthest jump sliding down the hill. The style and the force of wind are also included in the final score. The competition consists of qualifiactions and 2 rounds. In winter it is performed on snow and in summer on special kind of artificial grass. The most famous tournaments: Ski Jumping World Cup, Ski Flying World Championships, Four Hills Tournament, Raw Air and Grand Prix (held in summer). The Polish jumpers won countless competitions, many World Championships and stood on the podium six times during Olympic Games. The most famous Polish s kijumpers: - Adam Małysz, - Kamil Stoch, - Dawid Kubacki, - Piotr Ż yła. 16

Tennis 17

Tennis original name \"lawn tennis\" a game in which two opposing players (singles) or pairs of players (doubles) use rackets to hit a ball and bounce over a net on a rectangular court. There are four main, most prestigious tournaments, Grand Slam tournaments: - Australian Open, - French Open (Roland Garros), - Wimbledon (in GB), - US Open. The most famous Polish players: - Iga Świątek, - Hubert Hurkacz, - Magda Linette, - Agnieszka Radwańska 18

VOLLEYBALL 19

Volleyball is a sport in which the points are scored if the ball hits the ground on the opponent's side or it leaves the court after the opponent's touch. Volleyball is a team sport played by six-man teams separated by a net. The most famous tournaments are: - FIVB Volleyball World Cup, - FIVB Volleyball World Grand Championship, - FIVB Volleyball World League The most famous Polish players are: - Bartosz Kurek, - Michał Kubiak, - Mariusz Wlazły, - Agata Mróz-Olszewska, - Wilfredo León, - Aleksander Śliwka. 20
