The building is exposed to the N1 Highway along its western boundary : • The design exploits its highly visible position by implied transparency to public functions of the building – the western automated glass screened façade is a window to the city punctured by the masses of Conference facilities and Library. There is a juxtaposed, with Solid and light weight technology strengthened by slender steel struts of the common walkway – “ Corporate Street” • Functional Nodes link office wings to the Corporate Street . This common interaction zone houses informal meeting areas and doubles up as a permanent exhibition space. • Automatic solar control shading devises limit, manage the ingress of the western sun into the Corporate Street. The screen open base assists with natural ventilation into the large interaction, exibition volume. The building is read through a transparent unplanned public spine link to programmed spaces : ablutions, meeting rooms, conference facility and resource centre supporting control office accommodation under un-noticable security web. The purpose of the project was to create a creative space where people from various campus buildings and scientific research backgrounds can commune socially share ideas and do research. The building’s various function rooms can also be booked to host presentations, conference calls and meetings. The building’s facilities include: • Multi-functional social pause area and relaxation space. • Multi-functional exhibition and gathering space • Research and reading area with work cubicles and web access. • Technologically equipped auditorium which doubles as a function venue and open out onto an exterior deck/break away space. • Two small meeting rooms. • A coffee shop equipped with fully functioning kitchen and exterior deck. • Custom graphic artwork commissioned to reflect the science and research background of the CSIR.
