ICFFT his year the International Contemporary Furniture Fair evolved into, simply, ICFF. No longer an acronym, it is now the fair’s sole name. In tossing aside its unwieldy former moniker it has gained a wider scope, becoming the most comprehensive fair dedicated to contemporary design across all disciplines. All is embraced: faucets, furniture, fabric and more are here in droves, showcased as heavyweight bulls amongst the china-shop sensibility of the Javits Center’s architecture. Considering the multitude of exhibitioners we cannot write of trends as we once knew the HYLAND - ICFF Preview
phenomenon, for saying something is trendy belittles the zeitgeistof the design community, not to mention efforts of the designersthemselves. In the year Rihanna ascended the stairs of WintourianHeaven in a robe of Chinois lemon confection, inspiring waves ofawe and memes, it seems more appropriate to speak of macro andmicro worldviews colliding in a time of digitally trained eyes and arenewed emphasis on makers’ hands.Emerald Expo’s Kevin O’Keefe, ICFF’s visionary leader, has grownthe fair thirty-percent last year as well as this year. Bold moves includeItalian exhibitors from Milan’s HO.MI Fair, a Luxe. Magazineluxury home section, extensive ASID events and a plethora of newexhibitors. The HYLAND Award for Lifetime Achievement in Design will bepresented to Tom Dixon at the ICFF opening night party at theMuseum of Modern Art, Saturday May 16th.To celebrate the fusion of Art and Design, HYLAND EditorChristopher Hyland commissioned Alexander Gendell of Folditureto create an art installation in the form of a triptych, The Good Angels, asynthesis of furniture and textile as art, honoring the creative energieswhich form a common thread not only among the participants ofICFF but among those who seek balance, the common good.ICFF, in its extensive breadth, presents to the world the commongood found in the best of Design. -The EditorsPrevious page:Alexander GendellThe Good Angels, Triptych, 2015Mixed Media: Folditure furniture and Christopher Hyland, Inc. textiles.Commissioned by Christopher S. I saw in Alexander Gendell’s work the singular opportunityto create a fine art triptych emanating from the fusion of theartistic aspects of furniture and textiles, a world which heand I inhabit, all the while memorializing and celebratingthe good angels of Fort Saint Angelo, of Lincoln, of MartinLuther King, Jr. and of Walter Benjamin - the angels of hopeand peace. My interest regarding castles, good angels and peace beganduring childhood. A haphazard assemblage of wood The Goodremnants, logos, cardboard boxes and Angelsbooks, constructed on the third floor of triptychmy parents house, formed my models comm-of famed castles Saint Angelo and Saint issioned fromElmo. AlexanderAs a school boy I eventually visited Gendellthe real Forts Saint Angelo and Elmo commemorateson Malta, where 450 years ago an epic all thosebattle occurred between East and West. individualsFor me Fort Saint Angelo came to and entitiessymbolize a physical embodiment of that seekpeace, its namesake the spiritual. I to resolvelater realized a childhood dream when conflicts andthe castle was returned to the Knights sustain peace.who once occupied it during the siege:today their mission no longer includeswar, but rather the charisma of assistingthe needy of all faiths and races, East orWest. The Good Angels triptych commissionedfrom Alexander Gendell commemoratesall those individuals and entities that seekto resolve conflicts and sustain peace.Martin Luther King, Jr. told me, whilea student at Lawrence Academy: “lookevil in the eye and give it no succor.”Lincoln, however arduous the price, pursued the noble course. The Good Angels with Folditure chairs removed, Christopher Hyland fabric remaining who I came to know during university, commissioned an image of an angel from Klee, and although his thoughts were pessimistic I found his narrative inspired by the Good Angels. An alternate name for the triptych could very well be “The Holy Angels of Peace” in keeping with Fort Saint Angelo’s name. Gendell invites us to reveal the layers by literally sitting on the folding chairs which form part of the work: integrating our bodies and in effect creating a performance piece. As his Folditure chairs are peeled away, the image of Christopher Hyland fabric remains, in this case a textile inspired by a field of millions of grass blades, each one representing a different life story, a different aspiration, yet all forming a natural, harmonious whole, a visual metaphor for peace.
