David P. Smith 149 this question of a believer. It is very ineffective. There is no evangelism because the believer makes no effort to share the Good News except when asked. However, true Lifestyle Evangelism is at least balanced with good works and good outreach. Question: “What is lifestyle evangelism?” Answer: “Lifestyle evangelism” is an evangelism strategy that focuses on living a holy, winsome life among unbelievers with the goal of attracting people to the message of Jesus Christ. Many variations of lifestyle evangelism exist, but the definitive resource is the book Lifestyle Evangelism by Joe Aldrich. Lifestyle evangelism has been popular since the 1990s, and many Western Christians have sought to share their faith through their lifestyle in addition to their verbal testimony. In contrast with other methods such as tracts, crusades, and media-based outreach, popular in the mid-twentieth century, lifestyle evangelism focuses on building relationships with one person at a time. Through friendship, opportunities arise to share the gospel.111 The importance of looking at Lifestyle Evangelism is noted in the effect it has had on soulwinning, per se. Even though there can be a balanced approach, yet it is seldom balanced. Referring to evangelism the following pastor states: I just didn’t do it. I didn’t know any non-Christians. My whole world was the church. I worked with Christians, socialized with Christians, and worshiped with Christians. All of my evangelism was “official”—preaching, funerals, walk-in counseling. I wondered what sort of evangelist I would be without all the official opportunities. If I were not a pastor, would I be any good at doing what I told my flock to do?112 Mark Lauterbach Mark Lauterbach describes many pastors today. They find themselves in circumstances that do not seem conducive to soulwinning. The alternative then is to do pulpit evangelism, which basically means to present the gospel in the pulpit in hopes that those who are lost in the congregation will become saved through the message. We are grateful for the faithfulness of these pastors in at least proclaiming the gospel every week. Yet, this is not “doing the work of an evangelist” as Paul taught in 2Timothy 4:5. An evangelist is a soulwinner wherever he goes, not just in his pulpit. If the pastor satisfies himself with Lifestyle
150 The Art and Science of Soulwinning Evangelism, he will not be a soulwinner. Then the term, soulwinning, becomes somewhat of an irritation. He will even scoff at it as being somewhat archaic, or say things like, “door-knocking doesn’t work anymore.” It is therefore much more convenient to avoid the term ‘soulwinning’ and adjust to Lifestyle evangelism. Some would prefer to preach a salvation message in their pulpit where there are few if any unbelievers, instead of reaching out to find the unchurched and the unreached in their communities. CHANGING THE TERMS Personal soulwinning, as a statement, has been downgraded over a period of 50 years to mean; personal evangelism, then personal witnessing, then effective witnessing. This author experienced this downgrade in the classes he took at seminary. The term, soulwinning, was already being ‘improved upon’ fifty years ago by well-meaning teachers who were pastors of local churches where they practiced mostly pulpit evangelism. The common points of persuasion to the student were to simply satisfy oneself with being an ‘effective witness’ rather than a soulwinner. Being a soulwinner suggested one was winning souls to Christ. Many were not winning souls, so it was much more convenient to be a more effective witness for Christ. It sounds harmless, however, the fruit of this has produced little fruit for countless pastors throughout their ministries. “Sharing your faith” is another statement that is used to substitute for effective witnessing. Since there has been little ‘effective witnessing’ in the churches, it sounds a lot less threatening to say “Sharing your faith”. What does that mean? Sharing your faith ought to mean that one shares with another why he believes in Jesus Christ and how that person too can be saved for all eternity. If one is not careful this term could be misconstrued as telling someone that you go to church or that you are religious. Be careful to truly share your faith as Billy Graham describes it: 1. Tell them about God’s plan—peace and life. God loves you and wants you to experience the peace and life He offers. The Bible says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) He has a plan for you.
David P. Smith 151 2. Share our problem—separation from God. Being at peace with God is not automatic. By nature, we are all separated from Him. The Bible says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). God is holy, but we are human and don’t measure up to His perfect standard. We are sinful, and “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). 3. Talk about God’s remedy—the cross. God’s love bridges the gap of separation between you and Him. When Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose from the grave, He paid the penalty for your sins. The Bible says, “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” (1 Peter 2:24). 4. Our response—receive Christ. You cross the bridge into God’s family when you accept Christ’s free gift of salvation. The Bible says, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” (John 1:12)113 RELATIONAL EVANGELISM Relational evangelism is an effective means of making friendships for the purpose of winning the lost soul to Christ. We are not denouncing any form of evangelism in this book. We are highlighting the dangers of some attempts at changing the terminology, specifically ‘soulwinning.’ Relational evangelism, friendship evangelism, or servant evangelism are terms described in the following article: “Friendship Evangelism,” also known as “lifestyle evangelism,” “servant evangelism,” or “relational evangelism,” is a form of evangelism commonly practiced in present-day American evangelicalism. The overarching principle in “friendship evangelism,” regardless of the methods employed, is to befriend an unsaved person with the hope of one day having the opportunity to share the gospel with him or her. It is both a common and accepted practice among proponents of “friendship evangelism” to spend an undetermined period of time (days, weeks, months, even years) in an effort to develop a relationship with an unsaved person. Proponents of “friendship evangelism” often see the presentation of the gospel as a privilege given by the unbeliever, or a right earned by the believer, which is made possible through the investment of time and service in a relationship.114
152 The Art and Science of Soulwinning Relational evangelism can be effective in reaching the lost, one- at-a-time. The downside of this kind of evangelism is that it takes an interminable amount of time to see any results. Although there are results. It may take years of patiently praying, developing the relationship, and allowing the lost person to slowly begin to open up to the point of a discussion about his soul. This type of evangelism ought to be developed by all of us. We never know when the person will open up to the gospel and receive Christ. The soulwinner will develop relationships with people that he cannot reach immediately. He knows the urgency of sharing the gospel to his new found friend, and rather than gamble on his soul’s lost condition by waiting for months or even years (because he could actually die before hearing the gospel) he shares enough for the lost to come to Christ at that very moment. The soulwinner will wisely keep from driving a wedge between himself and the lost in hopes that he will be able to share again on another day. THE MISSIONAL LIFE What does “missional living” mean? Answer: “Missional” or “missional living” is a Christian term that in essence describes a missionary lifestyle. Being missional includes embracing the posture, the thinking, behaviors, and practices of a missionary in order to reach others with the message of the gospel. The term “missional” gained its popularity towards the end of the 20th century with the influence of Tim Keller, Alan Hirsch, and others, as well as the Gospel and Our Culture Network. Their basic premise is that all Christians should be involved in the Great Commission of Jesus (Matthew 28:19-20). Though many churches have mission statements or talk about the importance of having a mission, where missional churches differ is in their attitude toward the world. A missional church sees the mission as both its originating impulse and its organizing principle. It is patterned after what God has done in Jesus Christ, that is, to be missional means to be sent into the world; not to expect people to come to us. This idea differentiates a missional church from an “attractional” church.115 The concept of ‘missional’ is admirably defined for us by the above article. ‘Missional’ simply means for the church to act like the missionary who goes to a foreign field with the view of evangelizing that field through whatever
David P. Smith 153 means he can. The church is to be ‘missional’ in its own community. This is a great concept, and it is scriptural as per the Great Commission, Matthew 28:18-20. The idea is to become ‘missional’ as opposed to ‘attractional.’ The local church is commissioned to go out and bring them in, not to ‘attract’ them into the church. Nonetheless, if we become missional will we be evangelistic? If we go out with the intention of not bringing them in, then to what purpose are we becoming missional? In the book of Acts (2:38-47) it was clear that the church went out (sent/missional) but that the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. There was an attraction. It was the preaching of the gospel in the languages that were present on that day in Jerusalem. It was very attractional and missional at the same time. If we could use the term ‘missional soulwinning’ it would strongly suggest that our goal in being missional is to be soulwinning; “Go out and bring them in”, be ‘missional’ and ‘attractional.’ Ed Stetzer comments on the importance of a church planter being intentionally evangelistic (soulwinning): If the church planter is not intentional in evangelism, the planter— and very soon, the new church—will lose its evangelistic zeal. A reduced evangelistic focus foreshadows the long-term loss of evangelistic zeal. Missional churches need to model Christian community and to invite others to join the journey of faith while practicing intentional evangelism.116 Without soulwinning there is no church planting. Without soulwinning there is no church growth. Without soulwinning a church will eventually die. Therefore, let us embrace the terminology that best fits the Great Commission—soulwinning.
CHAPTER 11 SIGNS OF HOPE There are signs of hope on the horizon for spiritual revival. There is always hope. When we become hopeless we lose ground, we go backwards. We cannot go backwards when our Savior instructs us to “Go into all the world and preach the gospel.” There will probably be a great harvest of souls yet to come even as Jesus is about to return. We know that “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.” (Matthew 24:14) When the good news gets into every nation it is because soulwinners have gone out to win the lost to Christ. There is going to be a lot of soulwinning evangelism. Some believe in a coming revival that will be astounding, beyond belief, world-wide. We see hints of it in Matthew 24:14. Praise God that the greatest hope of all is still moving us forward, the Blessed Hope of the return of Christ. We want to take as many souls with us into the new kingdom of our Lord Jesus Messiah, into the new millennium where we will live and reign with Christ for a thousand years. There is a world-wide movement of evangelical churches working tirelessly to bring the gospel to the ends of the earth. The reports of people coming to Christ are coming from every part of the globe. The Joshua Project reports that there are now only 7,040 more unreached people groups that have yet to be reached with the gospel. Only twenty years ago the number of unreached people groups was well over 16,970. Of the world’s 7.48 billion there are still 3.14 billion unreached.117 Wycliffe translators are feverishly working to translate the gospel into all of the languages of the world by going into the most remote places on earth, bearing the precious seed. This is genuine soulwinning on the cutting edge of mankind’s existence. In North America new ministries are being formed specifically for the purpose of evangelism. New ministries are popping up everywhere
156 The Art and Science of Soulwinning focused on evangelism both nationally and internationally. The list of ministries engaged in evangelism would be too numerous to list on this paper. The planting of new churches is a critical component to the increase of soulwinning evangelism. New churches are being planted all over the USA and Canada. Planting new churches is one of the best ways to do evangelism. In a study determined to find out why some churches grew and others did not it was discovered that: All denominations surveyed placed church planting as a very important, if not the number one, strategy for evangelism. . . The fact is, starting a new ethnic congregation or focusing on a particular generation in a new start is much easier than trying to change the culture of an established congregation.118 Therefore, a lot of new churches ought to be planted ASAP. Unfortunately, planting new churches is often the last thing an association of churches focuses on simply because it may have declined to the point it can no longer raise sufficient funds to pay a planter’s salary or subsidize him with a stipend. Notwithstanding, the financial resources are really not the solution to the dilemma as much as prayer and faith will be. Faith lags very low among many as they see their resources dry up or the lack of interested men and women who will step out by faith to start churches bi-vocationally. Our motto should be “Whatever it takes to do the commands of our Savior”. The resources and finances are available even if they are still in the pockets of believers. God provides. Seminaries play a critical role in the promotion of and practice of soulwinning. Seminaries over a period of many years tend to change in their focus. Many fine Bible schools have started out to prepare men and women for the ministry which included active participation in soulwinning as a requirement for graduating from their educational and religious studies. The schools would require weekly Christian service reporting from each student. Over the years this writer has seen seminary after seminary fall away from these good practices which held students accountable. It is very refreshing too, to discover that some of those schools have renewed personal soulwinning accountability and caused their professorial faculty to lead out in evangelism among their
David P. Smith 157 students. Some schools refuse to allow professors to teach on campus if they are not actively evangelizing. Reaching the postmodern person or the millennials will not necessarily take place by building beautiful edifices of worship or by providing multiple ministry programs. So often these superficial factors reach existing believers, or people that are searching for extracurricular programs for their children or for themselves. Secular postmoderns are one of the largest segments of our present society. Personal soulwinning is likely to be the only effective way to reach these secularists in this writer’s opinion. And then there was Covid-19. The book has yet to be written on the pandemic of 2020. There is hope on the horizon. O, for the passion for souls to rise among us! May it be caught by God’s people everywhere.
