8. 1980 CARTER-MONDALE CAMPAIGN MEMORABILIA It has been said that Jimmy Carter chose to use green and white on his presidential campaign materials to honor his heritage as a peanut farmer. While we cannot say for certain what the motivation was, this collection of memorabilia speaks to the popularity of the choice. You can adorn yourself and your dining room with these Carter-Mondale green-and- white items. The woven hickory bark for the gorgeous, comfortable, and durable seat was harvested in eastern Tennessee. 11. NEPAL ELECTION MEMORABILIA An observer vest worn by President Carter during the Nepal elections in 2013 is offered in this lot. The front of the blue fishing-style vest displays the Carter Center logo along with the word “Observer.” Both also appear on the back along with the phrase “Nepal CA elections November 2013.” With the vest is a lanyard holding President Carter’s identification card that lists “Delegation Leader” as his title and an 8-inch by 10-inch color photograph that shows him smiling with a young Nepalese child. DONALD STEIN CHINA PHOTOGRAPHS Donald Stein, a leading Emory neuroscience researcher and longtime supporter of The Carter Center, is also an extraordinary photographer, and these are certified giclée prints of his original works. The prints are on fine art paper and use archival pigmented inks to guarantee color quality, accuracy, and detail that capture the original digital image. Each comes with a certificate of authenticity and is labeled 1 of 3. The winning bidder will decide whether to purchase one or both of these limited-edition photographs. The first photograph is titled “Members of The Cabinet” and features four Asiatic black bears, recognizable because of the v-shaped white patch on their chests. The photograph was taken near Beijing at a zoo close to the Great Wall of China. Captured at just the right moment, each bear has its own distinct pose as it looks out at the crowd. The second photograph is titled “The Caravan: Somewhere in the Taklamakan Desert, China.” It shows a view, from a distance, of a caravan of camels and riders in a vast desert heading toward the lone building on a sand dune. HANDCRAFTED EARRINGS AND NECKLACE SET For the past three years, the Atlanta Contemporary Jewelry Show has been held at The Carter Center, and artists Carol and Jean-Pierre Hsu have displayed their creations there. This husband-and-wife team is from Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, and the two work together to create aerodynamic mobiles and eclectic, colorful jewelry. The Param (which means wind in Korean) necklace in gold, chablis, and orange is 14 inches long and closes with a clasp behind the pendant, which hangs from four 11⁄ 8-inch-diameter black rubber cords. The matching Kopec (which means hill in Czech) earrings are for pierced ears and are 17⁄ 8 inches long including sterling earwire. CARTER, DENG, AND XI COLLECTIBLES Here we have a collection of items that celebrate the relationship between President Carter and leaders of China. First is a beautiful photograph taken by Michael Evans that shows President Carter and Deng Xiaoping waving as they walk down a row of uniformed American servicemen. It is signed by President Carter. Next is a set of three commemorative plates featuring images of Jimmy Carter. One shows him alone, the second shows him with Deng, and the third shows Carter and Xi Jinping. The keepsakes were created as gifts and given to The Carter Center at the annual forum on Chinese-U.S. relations held at The Carter Center. The robes measure 48 inches by Winning bid: 70 inches and 51 inches by 69 inches. $15,000.00 Donor(s): The Carter Center Value: $750.00   Winning bid: $2,000.00 18. “BEHOLD” SCULPTURE REPLICA In 1978, artist Patrick Morelli was inspired to create “Behold.” The sculpture is based on a ritual seen in the critically acclaimed television miniseries “Roots,” where a newborn is held up to the heavens and told, “Behold the only thing greater than yourself.” In 1980, when President Carter signed the bill that created the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta, Coretta Scott King designated a space on the grounds for a larger version of the statue that she had received from Morelli. The 10-foot-tall “Behold” monument, on which this 15-inch by 4-inch by 3-inch version is based, was unveiled on January 11, 1990. Included with the statue is a framed small collage showing photographs of the sculpture and of President Carter and Mrs. King on the day the bill was signed. 19. STEFAN FINDEL PHOTOGRAPH “Trees, Mills Mansion, Staatsburg, NY” is one of the pieces in Stefan Findel’s Hudson Valley, New York, portfolio. The image shows a road leading through trees to an entrance with stone pillars on either side. The only artist to do so, Findel used carbon printing to transfer the photograph to glass and then applied 24-karat gold leaf to the back. 21. HAND-TURNED MOULTHROP WOODEN BOWL Matt Moulthrop is a third-generation wood turner who uses a lathe and hand-forged tools to turn logs into sculpture. According to his website, his creations can be seen in the Smithsonian Institution, the Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of American Art, and The Carter Center. The wood for this bowl came from a pecan tree that fell when Hurricane Michael swept across the southeast and hit the Carters’ farm in Plains, Georgia. After being turned into the initial shape, the wood was treated for several months to prevent cracking. The bottom of the bowl is signed by both President Carter and Matt Moulthrop. 67. JOHN MUIR MANUSCRIPT John Muir (1838–1914) was an American naturalist, author, envi- ronmental philosopher, and early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States. The display table and sculpture were designed and fabricated of reclaimed maple, oak, and walnut by 26-year-old Kyle Cottier, a multimedia artist born in Louisville, Kentucky. Cottier graduated from the Art Academy of Cincinnati and works in New York in the studio of Doug and Mike Starn. The title for this piece comes from a Bill Callahan country album released in 2009. Cottier states, “The music speaks to the goal that we all come together as one free and equally powerful and beautiful creature.” His next solo show is in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, in October 2019. 78. HANDCRAFTED UKULELE This handcrafted tenor ukulele has a unique design that allows the soundhole cutouts, which are shaped like the Hawaiian Islands chain, to resonate at a higher level. The sides, neck, and body are made of acacia wood, which is highly sought after for its durability and beauty. The face of the instrument is made with American spruce, and the fingerboard is made of Mexican cocobolo with a zebra wood inlay. The instrument was handcrafted by Bud Tovar. In a 2012 interview with the late Gilbert Kaplan, host of the radio program “Mad About Music,” President Carter said that the ukulele is the only instrument he ever learned to play. 82. CEDAR CHEST BY PRESIDENT CARTER A handcrafted cedar chest made by Jimmy Carter is a collectible that is both functional and ornamental. Built in his workshop in Plains, Georgia, between October 1997 and January 1998, the chest measures 24 inches tall, 23 inches deep, and 39½ inches long. According to his book “The Craftmanship of Jimmy Carter,” President and Mrs. Carter have a matching chest in their bedroom. This one was originally sold at the 1998 Winter Weekend auction. It was painted by President Carter in January 2008. 3. “ Old Grist Mill” is a piece created by President Carter in March 2008. It measures 30 inches by 24 inches and is commercially framed. The oil-on-canvas painting features a serene view of an old mill with its large water wheel and a bridge as seen from across a lake.
