BUYING A PUPPY The Boerboel is manageable, reliable, obedient, trainable, intelligent and calm with a balanced, confident nature. Their unconditional love shown to their human family is what makes them stand out above the rest! Owning a Boerboel brings with it lots of love, pleasure and joy, as well as a sense of security. It also comes with responsibilities – the most important of which is to have the necessary information to make an informed decision at the outset. It is in your own interests to buy a registered dog from a SABBS registered breeder, and to insist on proof of his/her paid-up membership. You may also wish to check on the status of the breeder with the SABBS Office. This will ensure that you will receive the proper documentation with your dog, as well as confirm that the breeder complies with the rules and guidelines set by SABBS. JUDGING CRITERIA Showmanship is important. All participants will be judged with consideration of the extent to which they are representative of the Boerboel, in accordance with the SABBS Breed Standard. MEET OUR JUDGES SHUPI WILL Shupi has had an interest in dogs from a very young age. Being a lawyer and having to travel across the African continent on business, he decided he needed a reliable guardian dog to be with his family while away from home. This was the beginning of a decision to choose the Boerboel as a family guard dog. Shupi first joined SABT in 2009, initially as an owner and as his interest developed, he became a hobby breeder. His passion for the breed led him to undertake courses to become an Appraiser and ultimately qualifying as Senior Appraiser and with time developed into a very good show judge. Shupi lives in Harare but travels across the continent regularly during which time he enjoys visiting Boerboel enthusiasts and breeders. THYS VON SOLMS On the farm I grew up with dogs. My love for Boerboels arose as a result of the versatility of the breed - good family dog, watchdog, as well as a worker’s dog in certain cases. My love for the breed made me take a Breeders and Selectors course in 2000 and I was placed as top student in all three categories: theory, practical, as well as Overall Best Student. After appraising many dogs as an apprentice appraiser, I was promoted to Appraiser in 2000. In 2001, I was appointed as Senior Appraiser, after passing all necessary exams. Since 2000, I was actively involved in breeding Boerboels, however, I had to unfortunately downsize considerably in 2005 because we moved into town. From 2004, I also started appraising Boerboels overseas, as well as offering Courses. I have previously also been Chief Judge at International shows. For the past 20 years, I have continued to be actively involved as a Senior Appraiser of Boerboels. It is my passion to share my knowledge with people and live out my love for the Boerboel breed. 11
MEET OUR JUDGES ANEMARI PRETORIUS I bought my first Boerboel in 1992, became totally mesmerised with the breed, immediately joined the SABT/SABBA and started breeding up to the end of 2019, when my husband got terminally ill. I attended the 1st Breeders’ course that was held in 1997, as well as most of them that were presented after that. I was appointed as senior appraiser in 2001 and since then have appraised dogs in RSA, Africa, USA, Europe, UK, Australia and Scandinavia, as well as judging shows in all these countries. I also presented breeders’ and appraiser courses in all these abovementioned countries and after thoroughly scrutinising their results, appointed senior appraisers, as well as learner appraisers. My love for the breed runs deeply through all that I value and hold dear in life. The Boerboel is, and always will remain, a huge influence and love in my life. JOHAN BLOMURES I have been involved in the Boerboel world for many years! I grew up with Boerboels and started breeding Boerboels in 1996. I completed my Appraiser course in 1997 and I appraised over 1000 Boerboels before being promoted to Senior Appraiser. I passed my judges course in cattle in 1986 and I have judged shows both Nationally and Internationally. I am still involved in the Brangus community assisting with training and screening of more than 8000 cattle on the linear classification. To this day, I still judge at Cattle Shows as well! 12
