Since University I knew I was interested in making a career as a teacher. I did not know how much a Master’s degree would have propelled me into my career. When I finally wrote my Master’s thesis I was so engrossed in the material that it was like I was transported to a different place. I was busy chasing theories and researching different things and I was too busy to really enjoy the things I had before me. At the time I began my Master’s I was dating still. Topics for Discussion Situation Reading After the Spring of 2020, it became clear that Education had not really kept up with student needs. One area that students nowadays have developed beyond education is their relationship with technology. Students are using their personal technology more than ever. They seem to have started using their devices for a lot of the things we in the field of education teach. Calculators for math for example can compute math. Students are also using devices that limit the need to memorize information. With instantaneous access to the internet, we are able to search for answers faster than we are able to understand in a traditional course. The future of education should take into account the modern day use of technology and the shift it presents to human thinking. We in Education need to be more resourceful to be able to support a changing world and not simply see ingenuity as a distraction. Comprehension 1. Many restaurants have fresh fish. Salmon, being one of the local delicacies, is most commonly placed on sushi rice and eaten with wasabi and soy sauce in the traditional Japanese style. This is such a common and simple lunch routine for so many that work downtown that it is not something people need to do together. Salmon sushi is found in many Japanese restaurants in a long rectangular plastic case with a clump of wasabi and a packet of soy sauce so that it can be easily taken out. I would often find a park bench and eat my lunch peacefully while watching the animals and people in downtown Vancouver. One thing I missed while I was working from home in 2020 was Odeng. The fish cake in hot fish broth is one of those cold-weather treats you eat on the side of the road at a food stall in South Korea without even thinking. I love the spicy broth and simple stick of hot food in the cold weather. It is never easy to share the food with others. Topics for Discussion Situation Reading Credit is very different in the U.S. To calculate your credit score, you almost need a personal banker or a credit service. The credit score is used for many things: loans, buying a house, going to university, and getting a car are just some of the items you need a credit score for. The calculations are made based mostly on your ability to pay back small loans, usually based on your history of paying for credit cards. In most countries, a credit card is used similarly to a debit card. Debit cards withdraw money from your account directly when used. In the U.S. a credit card is deducted retroactively, meaning a card will be paid at the end of the month and will not immediately withdraw from your account by default. You need to pay for your credit card like you would pay for the energy you use at your house each month. Using these monthly payments a score is created that has a huge impact on your ability to share trust in other lenders later on in your life. Always pay your bill on time and your score will be good! Our goal with the blog was to share some of the ridiculous things we encountered each day in a humorous way. Humor provides a unique opportunity to turn negatives into positives. What was once something to avoid is now something to endure and share. I am grateful that I have the outlet to share with my sister. It gives me somewhere to place stress and enables me to wade through the negativity of a situation until I come up with something shareworthy. Topics for Discussion Situation Reading During 2020’s Covid-19 pandemic I had my first officially paid staycation. In the past, we had take our vacation time to relax at home, but this was different. I wanted to get out and go travel somewhere, anywhere, but I was stuck at home due to travel restrictions. Instead of travelling, we stayed home. I took the time to perfect my home routine. I developed a system to help us get through our busy nights taking care of our two kids. We decided on a routine. I would wash the dishes then leave them for my wife to rinse and stack. I would take care of the laundry because the dust irritates my wife’s allergies. She would focus on the kids because I become too impatient when they don’t listen. On the whole the staycation became valuable. It allowed us to spend more time together. While it initially gave us more time to be with our children as they grow up, it quickly became kind of tiring to repeat the same routine. Sometimes my hast decision-making creates problems. I often have to apologize for doing things too fast and loud. I think it is important to complete something when you start it, so I always push through. I am less worried about the process than the outcome. For others, it is important to understand the process. I believe this is a form of micro-management that I do not agree with. It is difficult for me to work with people who make demands on procedural things. I pride myself in logistics and feel that flexibility is more vital to task completion than procedural benchmarks. This concept is at odds with quite a bit of education. Education finds procedural benchmarks and objective procedures to be a cornerstone of clear pedagogy. I find this a crutch to subjective understanding.
