come to The Precis Team is glad to announce that we are presently working towards creating a monthly E-newsletter, the first of its kind, by the students of CIS (College for Integrated Studies, University of Hyderabad). We have taken up this initiative to provide a platform for our fellow UoH members to showcase their talents, both artistic and critical. We want to create a network across campus and provide a space where people with similar interests can bond. This newsletter will consist of everything; poems, stories, articles, artwork, photography, diary entries, movie reviews, columns, experiences etc. of all languages. We want everyone to step forward and exhibit their passions and skills, even anonymously if they wish to. Through this newsletter, we hope to achieve everything mentioned above. This is an exciting step for the students of CIS and we will work towards ensuring this is a success. We look forward to your love and support. PRE Wel CIS 03

Her eyes closed tight palms covering her ears Head bent low to the ground, Seeing the powerful lightning flash frightened and afraid of the thunder showers was a routine for her She thought to herself and decided all this should now be ‘once upon a time’! Today, She sat down in her balcony her backbone straight pressure of the strong wind forked her face warning about the upcoming battle. Her eyes were bold to face the big lightning, a powerful flash hit her eyes She just blinked and opened her eyes again Even more determined to face the next opponent – The Thunder The gigantic crackling sound breached straight from the clouds into her ears Her head trying to reach the ground no more Was up straight Her eyes spoke – Yes! That fear was now ‘Once upon a time’! - Losari Vaishnavi 18ILMB04 08

TOURAINE, A. (1985). An Introduction to the Study of Social Movements. Social Research, 52(4), 749-787. Retrieved from http://www.jstor.org/stable/40970397 The very intellectual requirements to study the notions of any social reality would constitute four areas: commitments towards specific problems in pursuit of generalization of a broader social life; commitment towards the idea; adherence towards historical reflections; and finally, the methodological implementations of specific conceptual orientations. These would make sociology study a place without the empirical notions of philosophy where one would go highly opinionated or abstract. This is precisely what Alain Touraine tried to emphasize in the initial part of his study on social movements on how naïve it is just collectively to describe actions with a blend of crude opinions, thus explaining the limitations of ideology in making research meaningful. The context of this study (published in 1985) is an essential factor in realizing the significant conceptualizations that the author has tried to bring in. With the concepts of protests and social agitations, and mass movements (narrowed down to the term ‘social movements’) being shaped by the industrial societies as collective actions in the 1970s, a collective action, as explained by Touraine, is not something associated with a social movement but is only impulsive and thus, not bring any social change. According to him, social movement, unlike a collective action, is about the 15
protesting actors defining their identity of selves, understanding the orientations of the collective, recognizing the social nature of the dominant one in power, and understanding their nature of mobilization, all of which does not imply a mere collective reaction. Thus, it could be understood that, for Touraine, a social movement is a dimensional aspect of various concrete struggles, which through its actions of ‘social conflict,’ structures and transforms the ‘being’ of society. Now coming to the understanding of these social conflicts, Touraine tried to categorize them about the preliminary essence and the scope of the change that the conflict desires to bring in. These categorizations are: In quest of collective interests that would help the entire class gain an optimized position in the context of their struggle, for example, the labor movements; in the trial of restructuring the socio-cultural identity, where the enemy is seemed to be an invader who is a threat to their original status, for example, struggle among various ethnic groups; formation of a political force that has a potential of high social mobilization; in defense of a social privilege, the anti-revolutionaries; in pursuit of social control of the predominant pattern; and finally the quest of a formation of a new socio-political order. Though the author subsequently uses only the fifth category of ‘social control of predominant pattern,’ it has been made very clear that such a ‘conflictual action’ is not merely a single element but, on a larger scale, is one among the various aspects that equally help understand a social movement. However, the one the author took note of could probably be the central element that he might have felt that helps understand the intricacies of a ‘social movement.’ According to Touraine, these six categories of social conflict in a way correspond to three stages of one’s social life: organizational structures that separate the conflicting actors and thereby suggesting more self-determining stakes of the conflict; political systems that integrate the actor of the social movement with socio-politico-cultural ideals and alienate the opponent; and cultural orientation which corresponds with the second stage. With such a correspondence, Touraine views ‘social movement’ with a new perspective, as a critical factor in a society that is interlinked with the notions of liberation, emancipation, going against various forms of social domination, and in defense of the actor of the social movement against subjugation, alienation, and exploitation. He believes that social movements, unlike as a 16
tool of change in the socio-politico-cultural trend, should be considered as something that focuses on the systematically established tensions among various participants of society, primarily when centered around multiple instruments of social transition and has the potential to ‘achieve’ what the movement has been fighting for. While being at an alternate standpoint to Marx, who believes revolutions are ‘unavoidable’ in the presence of the oppressive nature of capitalism, Touraine thinks that whoever is subject to such a logic of domination cannot be genuine actors in the movements of social change. Furthermore, he analyses how it is the demand for identity and community and not the notions of positive functionalism or cynical structural Marxism that portray the most diverse illustration of social life. In conclusion, while the author tried to both criticize and recognize the relative understandings of various schools of thought behind the concept of ‘social movement,’ he also tried to point out the massive transformation in the central debates around the categorizations and various standard viewpoints of the notion of ‘social movements’ and hits at the uncertainty that prevailed in the adaptation of various models on the study of social movements. He further points out how it becomes the central problem of debate in a rapidly changing world to acknowledge and understand the ‘control’ of social change and how it must oppose the ‘strategies of social movement’ and similar probable complementary approaches. It stands relevant to date, as it must be understood that change is neither a causal effect of a collective action nor of an involuntary societal reaction, but as discussed earlier, is a detailed analysis of various factors of the self and the dominating one, to bring a systematic and structural transmission in the society, unlike a collective impulsive reaction that could become a mere expedient of mobilization without any glimpse of actual social change. - Anurag Dwibhashyam 17 19IAMS03
