The captivating images of Pujya Swamiji throughout the years, which include images of him with various luminaries and students as well as amazing photographs of India, makes this a work of art and a feast for the eyes and soul. I have been blessed to meet Swamiji both in India at Parmarth Ashram in Rishikesh and in Los Angeles. MUSIC MEDICINE /BOOK BY CHRISTINE STEVENS Sounds True Whether it’s your best friend, favor- ite pastime, or religious practice, music holds a special place for everyone. In the highly-anticipated Music Medicine, mu- sic therapist Christine Stevens explores the physical, emotional, and spiritual benefts received when engaging in the ocean of sound. A recent Gallup poll indicated that only 7.6% of Americans over the age of eigh- teen had played an instrument in the past year (due to fear of failure—a syndrome Stevens coined as instrumentphobia). Ste- vens shares scientifc research, examples from various scriptures and Deities, and cross-cultural practices everywhere from South African schools to Native Ameri- can tribes suggesting why we need to break through the mold and simply play. From rhythm, melody, harmony, silence, and the inner music that guides us, Music Medicine outlines how music is medicine for the mind, body, soul, heart and spirit. By learning to play in harmony with oth- ers, we learn how to live in harmony with the world around us. By the last inspirational page, you’ll fnd yourself pulling out your rusty old in- strument, never wanting to forsake your beloved friend again. If you haven’t yet tuned into your musical self, you’ll probably feel called to tap into music’s healing sound vibration. flm samsara << Many of the images, like the monks, reveal an engaged relationship with spirit, including the echo of chanting in the cathe- dral of Notre Dame, young monks turning a prayer wheel, and a sea of pilgrims pray- ing at Mecca. One of Samsara’s most breathtaking im- ages was the flmmakers’ favorite shoot: an aerial scene of the Bagan pagoda tem- ples scattered amongst the lush green of Myanmar, or Burma, visually presenting the power of spirit. They flmed the ex- panse while in a hot air balloon, gliding above the temples. The journey also guides us through some intense imagery related to the impacts of our choices: revealing people sifting through the detritus of a Philippine gar- bage dump, men hauling sulfur in a Java- nese volcanic mine, a munitions factory, prayers along the wailing wall, food pro- cessing plants, and the grace of women bal- ancing baskets in an African marketplace. Portraits abound on screen as we gaze into eyes larger than life, such as a particu- larly soulful glance of a geisha, cementing our human connection on this spinning wheel. The use of skillful time-lapse pho- tography further entrances, including the mesmerizing eye of a hurricane in Mecca or the people rushing by in subway stations. The flm is a stunning, almost intoxicat- ing visual experience that took me on this journey of Samsara. I felt the beauty, suf- fering, sadness, and ecstasy that we all ex- perience on the wheel of this life. The clear message here is that we need to wake up and become more aware of our environment, our consumerism, our con- sumption, and our collective slave/robotic hypnotic mannerisms. After watching the flm, I was left with a feeling of how im- portant is it to love and support each other as love is the universal energy that con- nects us all to the beauty that exists. When I asked Magidson how the journey of mak- ing this flm impacted him, he said it taught him to be more compassionate and more grateful – reminders to us all. [ SPA FEATURE ] Listen in on the interview Under a Tree conducted with Serene, and learn how she implements these values into her work at the spa and into her daily life: UaT: What is your passion? What wakes you up in the morning and gets you going? SS: My passion and what I’ve always wanted to do is to build a space for guests to be transformed. I facilitate the process by helping guests to look within their own lives, helping them to see the choice for gratitude and appreciation in all that they have. I assist guests to have transformational experiences while also helping them to have gratitude for every moment, every experience. Even in the throes of grief or despair, there is something beautiful that can be appreciated in each moment. Perhaps someone smiles at you at the grocery store, or you see a beautiful bird. There is always something to appreciate, even within the intricacy and depth of one’s emotions or the currency of one’s thoughts. When we are full of this gratitude, we have so much more to offer the people around us. This is what drives me, helping people appreciate everything in their lives. UaT: Can you tell us an experience of how gratitude has shifted your life? SS: Interestingly, you sometimes see people with so much less than what we have here in the United States really enjoying and appreciating their lives. I once spent three weeks in Africa and saw people struggling to get by, to fnd something to eat, who were happy and smiling. In contrast, here at home we have so much more to be grateful for every day. The fact that you are alive and breathing is something to be appreciative of. It is all about carrying this energy forward. I am honored by the massage therapists who work here on the property; they too bring that understanding of gratitude for the moment and all the gifts forward to the guests in each treatment. [ HOME FEATURE ] [ HOME FEATURE ] When we are inspired by space, we may spontaneously play with our practice, loosened from the constraints of a mat. In Udaya’s upstairs hallway, the expansive airy quality lends itself to Rosanna Tavarez and Julie Docherty’s parallel reverse warriors. These are times when our fellow practitioners inspire our own poses. The cool blue surface of the salt water pool can serve as a yoga mat, juxtaposing strength and softness, fuidity and grace with the stability of the surrounding support. Rosanna’s plank pose and her boat pose are creative expressions of Hatha Yoga: the sun and the moon, hard and strong cement, the soft and yielding water, the way our practice plays the edges and opposites. Poolside on the long, luxurious built-in benches, Julie and Ashley strike a pose, proving that yoga can certainly happen anywhere. Inside the round walls of the yurt, Ashley Walsh adjusts Paul Teodo in warrior. The discipline of our time on the mat nourishes our ongoing practice, our spontaneous fow, and then expands for our return to the daily routine.
