MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Wow, it was so wonderful to see everyone back in the parks again. Last year was so dreary with the minimal activity, but this year was quite the opposite — back to the way it used to be and then some. Families waiting in line to get into the pool. Kids zipping down the waterslides. Groups playing miniature golf. Families riding the boats. Picnics and cookouts happening throughout the park and at the shelters. Kids doing tricks with their bikes, skateboards, and scooters at the skate park. Layups and jump shots taking place at the basketball courts. People coming out to the Farmers Market at the Miller Center parking lot. Dogs and their owners enjoying Happy Tails Dog Park. People out enjoying the Fourth of July and the wonderful fireworks display put on by the Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce. The sound of the Sunday Night Pekin Park Concert Band filling the air. Children running around, swinging, climbing, and sliding at the new playground. Balls being hit back and forth on the tennis and pickleball courts. Infield dirt being kicked up by slides and diving plays on the softball fields. Golf balls being teed up and driven down Lick Creek and Parkview fairways. Archery programs and tournaments being held at Dirksen Park. Horseback trail rides occurring at McNaughton Park. Disc golf tournaments being played. The Pottawatomi Trail Run taking place in the spring. Soccer, baseball, and softball games and tournaments being played at the Pekin Sports Complex. Summer camp taking over the park and being able to utilize the dry ice rink floor when it is raining. People coming back to work out and play tennis at Parkside Fitness. Seniors coming back to enjoy the friendship at the Miller Center. The Illinois River Valley Special Recreation Association summer camp reaching all new participation numbers. Now that is what a park is supposed to be — filled with people laughing, playing, exercising, and just having a good, healthy, and safe time. We as a staff missed that and we missed you. Welcome back and thank you for your support of our programs, services, and facilities. It truly is appreciated and a joy to serve you and this community. Respectfully, Cameron Bettin Executive Director, Pekin Park District 5
