MESSAGE FrOM THE EXECUTIVE DIrECTOr It’s hard to believe that summer is winding down and the school year is beginning. Where did the time go? We hope you enjoyed spending time at the Pekin Park District this summer participating in an activity or program or utilizing one of our park facilities. We have had some challenges this year and I would like to update you on a few, which we have been diligently working on. First, losing the slides at DragonLand Water Park for the season right before opening was the last thing we wanted as it affected us as much as it affected you. The Park District is committed to the Water Park and is in the process of preparing bid specifications for a new mechanical system. We plan to go to bid this fall to get true costs of the project, which we estimate to be over $500,000. We also plan to re-coat and re-color the water slides extending their lifespan. This is an exciting project that will be like having a new pool projected to last another 20 plus years. In regard to the Lagoon, we feel confident we have come up with an environmentally safe maintenance plan that will help us keep the curly leaf pondweed and algae under control and the pond looking good. In regard to the skate park, the aging wood structure is becoming increasingly difficult to repair and maintain, and is unfortunately becoming a safety issue, hence the remaining ramps are currently closed off. The Park District realizes the importance of this facility to the community and the need to update it in some fashion based on public input and increased use once the majority of rules were eliminated creating a skate at your own risk facility. The Park District submitted an Open Space Land Acquisition and Development Grant (OSLAD) application to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for some improvements throughout Mineral Springs Park. We worked with a consulting firm to determine costs of the various improvement projects to incorporate into the grant application. These projects include improvements to the skate park, the playground, the tennis courts along Coal Car Drive, walks around the Lagoon and Pavilion, the fishing piers and viewing pier around the lagoon, the boat dock, and the bathrooms by Royal Avenue. The estimated cost of the project is $1,305,200. If awarded the grant, $400,000 will come from the State, $181,700 from other grants and agreements, and $723,500 will be the Park District’s share. You may ask yourself, how does the Park District plan to pay for these improvements? The DragonLand mechanical system will be funded by a restructure of bond reissuance or extending our debt service this fall. For the OSLAD grant, we again plan to restructure another bond reissuance in the fall of 2020, or possibly utilize some funds from our Pekin Park Foundation, in order to fund our local match. Except for the minimal annual tax-increase we are allowed by statute (being a tax-capped community), these bond reissuances or extension of debt service will not result in additional increases to your taxes. Lastly, I want to state that the Park District Board of Commissioners and staff care deeply about the parks and recreational opportunities we provide for you. We are working diligently to improve the iconic Mineral Springs Park, and all our other parks and facilities, because we know how important they are to the Pekin community of which I am proud to be a part of and now call home. Should you ever have any questions, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail me, or stop in to see me. Respectfully, Cameron Bettin Executive Director, Pekin Park District 5
The Pekin Park Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not for profit charitable organization. Its mission is to provide a means by which park supporters can help improve and beautify our parks and expand participation in activities and programs through a well-funded Gift Program and long- term sustaining Endowment Program. By having this funding mechanism in place to meet future needs and enhancements, the park will continue to serve as the cherished community icon that it has become. It also provides a means to leave a lasting legacy to be enjoyed by future generations of park users. Endowment gifts earn interest and dividends and can provide for maintenance, scholarships, enhancements and improvements. The Gift Catalog provides items that one may purchase as recognition or memorials and includes park benches, picnic tables or planted trees. Past projects include funding for the James Field Improvements Project, coordination of funding for the Pergola Project, and many trees planted throughout our park system. TREE DONOR PROGRAM The Pekin Park Foundation Tree Donor Program provides opportunities for meaningful tributes to family and friends, in honor of the birth of a child, special birthday, wedding, anniversary, various other special occasions, or a memorial to honor the memory of a loved one. Tree plantings are needed in many park locations including McNaughton Park, Lick Creek and Parkview Golf Courses, Pekin Park District Sports Complex and many other parks. The Superintendent of Parks will work with donors to select the best area suited for the type of tree planting desired. Plantings are done in the spring and fall. Tree cost is $300 or more depending on the size and type of tree chosen. Donors will receive a Commemorative Certificate and a document including a picture of the tree and an aerial map with precise GPS coordinates. Donated tree info is included in the Pekin Park Foundation Tree Donor Record Book as well as the Pekin Park Foundation website. Donations may remain anonymous if desired. Gifts are tax deductible and provide the community with a piece of nature that will benefit the area for years to come. For additional information, contact Cameron Bettin at (309) 353-4328 or [email protected] Potential donors may go to pekinparkfoundation.org to view the gift catalog and complete an inquiry form. Growing up, Fritz Ewalt’s mother and sister were both dieticians, so healthy eating and playtime were big parts of his childhood. As early as five years old, Fritz enjoyed riding motorcycles or spending an afternoon outdoors, most times with fishing pole in hand. But a lot can happen as we age into adulthood. In 2017, Fritz weighed nearly 400 pounds. The simple tasks he’d taken for granted, like walking up a hill to his favorite fishing spot, now made him short of breath. That’s when he realized he needed to change. With a membership to Parkside Athletics, Fritz took matters into his own hands to lead a healthier life. That same year, Fritz signed up for the fall weight-loss challenge at Parkside. He started out simple with lifting weights and using the stepper machine. Pairing his exercise with low-calorie foods like tuna, green salads, and tons of raw veggies, Fritz began seeing results! Not only were his food choices becoming healthier, but he needed smaller portions to feel satisfied. At the time, his goals were to weigh 275 pounds, build a dirt bike, and compete in the AMA Grand National Hill Climb! Fritz explains, “When I got down to 320, I joked with a friend that if I keep losing weight, I’ll have to build my own bike!” And he did it! Now at his goal weight, Fritz no longer watched from the sidelines, but he competed in the competition and took 9th place in the 750CC and 9th place in the Open Class Competition. Today, Fritz works out 5 days a week and attends the “Fit at 50+” class every Tuesday and Thursday, “The Fit at 50+ class is mostly ladies, but everyone is friends and we talk about everything! It’s a very positive atmosphere.” With the help of his new friends at Parkside Athletics, Fritz can enjoy life again, “I am living my life as I was in my 20s and 30s!” What’s next? Well, it’s not uncommon to catch Fritz in the kitchen or out by the grill. But he’s thinking of taking his love for cooking public. His brother owns a restaurant and his sister works as a chef. His goal is to ignite some friendly competition to try to beat them at their own game! And he credits his ability to focus on new passions with joining Parkside, “I knew I had to lose the weight. And I had to want it bad enough.” -“Now, I like to live everyday like it’s the first day of the rest of my life!” Fritz explains, “You never know what’s going to happen.” FRITZ PARKSIDE ATHLETICS MEMBER SPOTLIGHT 11

MINOR HAWKS HOCKEY This low-cost program is for boys and girls who are new to hockey and want to “suit up” in full gear and try this great game! Minor Hawks is a “Learn to Play” program offered through Pekin Park District for boys and girls ages 4 to 8 sponsored by the Chicago Blackhawks, Illinois Amateur Hockey AHAI, and USA Hockey. Working with coaches and staff of Veterans Memorial Arena and Pekin Amateur Hockey Association, your son and/or daughter will learn not only how to skate, and be introduced to the game of ice hockey, but Minor Hawks will also demonstrate to young athletes the life lessons of teamwork, self-confidence and determination that stay with them into their adult years. Hockey’s unique fitness advantage starts with skating, which develops many muscle groups that other sports do not. Unlike walking or running, skating isn’t something that’s done every day. This inherent uniqueness makes hockey a less “boring” road to building and maintaining fitness! Register online at pekinparkdistrict.org or in person at Veterans Memorial Arena. Minor Hawks Session #1 Clinic Dates*: Saturday, Nov. 2, 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 10 a.m. Cost: $60R/63NR; if registration received by Oct 28 $73; if registration received Oct 29 or later Code: 20REC251 Minor Hawks Session #2 Clinic Dates*: Saturday, Jan. 11, 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 10 a.m. Cost: $60R/63NR; if registration received by Jan 6 $73; if registration received Jan 7 or later Code: 20REC252 *Note: Times and dates subject to change based on ice availability. 16 PEKIN PARK DISTRICT
LITTLE STARS HOCKEY Our popular Little Stars Hockey program is designed for the youngest hockey star hopefuls (ages 3-5 years). Little Stars works on the fundamental skills of hockey: power skating, stick handling, passing, shooting, and most importantly, sportsmanship and team play. No prior skating experience is necessary. Our coaching staff have many years of hockey experience as former players and coaches, and we also have the assistance of Pekin Dragon Hockey as game schedules permit, which means some of the best coaches in the area will help your skater develop for recreational or competitive hockey in the future! Actual games begin at the end of the first session. All games are noncompetitive, set up to teach team play and concentrate on only the love of the game. The league schedule will be two 45-minute practices and one game weekly. Loaner equipment will be provided at no extra charge. Session #1 Dates: Oct. 8 – Nov. 15 Cost: $81R/$84NR Code: 19REC003 Session #2 Dates: Nov. 19 – Jan. 10 No games on Nov. 29 or during holiday break: Dec. 23 – Jan. 3 Practices resume Jan. 6 Cost: $81R/$84NR Code: 19REC004 Session #3 Dates: Jan. 14 – Feb. 21 Big game: Feb 21 Cost: $81R/$84NR Code: 19REC0005 Practices: Tuesdays: 5 – 5:45 p.m. Wednesdays: 5:15 – 6 p.m. Games: Fridays 5:15 p.m. FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Why is hockey good for kids? 1) Hockey builds character. Since hockey is a team sport, children who play hockey learn the value of working with others. 2) Experiencing the wins and losses that come with playing hockey helps a child deal with the wins and losses in life much better. Hockey also promotes a strong sense of self, positive self-esteem and pride. 17
Pekin Park District’s tumble, dance and cheer program is designed to develop coordination, balance, flexibility, and fitness in both girls and boys. The Miller Center is a place to thrive and grow as an aging adult. It’s purposefully designed to accommodate both active adults and the laidback types. Alisha Dault, Miller Center Administrator explains, “One huge hang up is the word ‘senior.’ People think it means older and being sedentary, but the Miller Center has seniors who want active, engaging trips and activities.” If you’re an adult who enjoys consistent physical exercise or someone that likes to play cards and engage in friendly conversation, the Miller Center has a place for you with a prime focus on creating an active community for seniors. “Members of the Miller Center enjoy bingo and game night, traveling to different towns to go consignment shopping, trips to the museum, casino trips to Iowa, and plenty of exercise classes,” explains Alisha. Jodi Burham, frequent participant in Miller Center activities states, “I look forward to my weekly exercise classes at the center! Everyone at the center is so active, friendly, and supportive!” And some days while they are traveling about, they throw in an impromptu stop to somewhere new, “We don’t always follow our agenda, states Alisha, “Sometimes we open Google Maps and search for what else is near us and go there too! We’re a place that’s a home base for people to be social!” Beyond a fun hangout space for social adults, the Miller Center offers transportation services for the unique needs of this demographic. Two cars are available to take members to their doctor or medical appointments, grocery shopping, and even to the hair salon and barber shop! Driver Dick Brewer furthers, “I enjoy being with people. That human connection is what drives me to keep working!” Dick’s employment started with a one-time outing for an event at the Miller Center that turned into a strong 5-year career, “Working here makes me feel like I’m doing something good for the community.” Plus, big updates are coming! The Miller Center is currently under construction. Alisha explains, “This year has been a year of change for us. We will have a grand re-opening in October to show off our new digs and hopefully encourage some new faces!” “Come in and you will be greeted with a smile, Alisha encourages. “There is no membership fee and it’s a place where you can connect and enjoy your age!” The Miller Center 551 S. 14th Street Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. MILLER CENTER PEKIN PARK DISTRICT 28
