MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Well, this has been a year that no one could have ever imagined. COVID-19 wreaked havoc on much of what we do at Pekin Park District. Facilities and offices were closed for a while, staff worked from home, some staff were furloughed, playgrounds were off-limits, and programs, sports and rentals were either canceled, postponed, rescheduled or just not offered at all. Many limitations have been placed on what we can and cannot do which limits our offerings. The Park District did continue to operate though, maintaining our parks and outdoor facilities for the residents that did want to venture out to enjoy some leisure activities. We also took advantage of our indoor facilities being closed by making various repairs and improvements. The Park District did complete the replacement of DragonLand Water Park’s mechanical system. Though we were not able to open this year due to COVID-19, we cannot wait to open the water park next year, as I’m sure our residents are excited as well. The Park District is moving forward with the planning of its Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) Grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) for improvements to Mineral Springs Park. The first improvement will be phase one of the new skate park. Due to COVID-19, we decided it was best to not hold an in-person public meeting to garner input on the skate park. We did put a survey out on-line and over 90 responses were received. For those that provided comments and insight on what you would like to see in the new skate park, thank you. From the information gathered in the survey, American Ramp Company designed a new skate park to be constructed in three phases. The first phase is part of the grant project. It is yet to be determined when the other phases will be completed. The Park District went out to bid for a new dehumidification and ventilation system at Veterans Memorial Arena to not only improve our ice rink operations, but also improve the moisture conditions of the Arena in the summer, allowing the facility to be more useable for summer camp and other activities, events and rentals. While Parkside Fitness was closed, the facility received a makeover with new equipment and layout in the weight room, and a fresh coat of paint for the majority of the facility. We hope you are beginning to feel more comfortable with stepping outside of the house and getting back to a more normal routine. The Park District is doing its best to follow all guidelines and recommendations of our local and state health departments, and the CDC, in order for you to feel comfortable and safe participating in our programs or visiting our facilities. Being a government agency, we feel it is our duty and responsibility to follow the guidance put in place by these agencies. If we all work together, we will get through this sooner rather than later. Our goal for 2021 is to get back to a typical summer of enjoying Mineral Springs Park and all it has to offer, along with all the other parks, amenities and facilities we provide throughout the community. Respectfully, Cameron Bettin Executive Director, Pekin Park District 5
The Pekin Park Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not for profit charitable organization. Its mission is to provide a means by which park supporters can help improve and beautify our parks and expand participation in activities and programs through a well-funded Gift Program and long- term sustaining Endowment Program. This funding mechanism helps to meet future needs and enhancements to keep our parks the cherished community icons they have become. It also provides a means to leave a lasting legacy to be enjoyed by future generations of park users. Endowment gifts earn interest and dividends and can provide for maintenance, scholarships, enhancements and improvements. The Gift Catalog provides items that one may purchase as recognition or memorials and includes park benches, picnic tables or planted trees. Past projects include funding for the James Field Improvements Project, coordination of funding for the Pergola Project, and many trees planted throughout our park system. TREE DONOR PROGRAM The Pekin Park Foundation Tree Donor Program provides opportunities for meaningful tributes to family and friends, in honor of the birth of a child, special birthday, wedding, anniversary, various other special occasions, or a memorial to honor the memory of a loved one. Tree plantings are needed in many park locations including McNaughton Park, Lick Creek and Parkview Golf Courses, Pekin Park District Sports Complex and many other parks. The Superintendent of Parks will work with donors to select the best area suited for the type of tree planting desired. Plantings are done in the spring and fall. Tree cost is $300 or more depending on the size and type of tree chosen. Donors will receive a Commemorative Certificate and a document including a picture of the tree and an aerial map with precise GPS coordinates. Donated tree info is included in the Pekin Park Foundation Tree Donor Record Book as well as the Pekin Park Foundation website. Donations may remain anonymous if desired. Gifts are tax deductible and provide the community with a piece of nature that will benefit the area for years to come. For additional information, contact Cameron Bettin at (309) 353-4328 or [email protected] Potential donors may go to pekinparkfoundation.org to view the gift catalog and complete an inquiry form. How to register: Online: pekinparkdistrict.org Fax: (309) 347-3970 Mail: 1701 Court St., Pekin, IL 61554 Walk-In: Veterans Memorial Arena, Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. (behind the football stadium) A note about our classes: Our more popular classes fill up quickly. Classes may be added, moved, combined or dropped depending upon enrollment numbers. What do I wear to Tumble, Dance and Cheer classes? For their safety, tumblers wear leotards or elastic waistband shorts with a T-shirt tucked in tightly (please no baggy shirts or jeans). Tumblers are barefooted or wear non-skid tumbling shoes. Hair needs to be pulled back away from the face. No jewelry, please. Cheer wears a white tennis shoe (or cheer shoe). These shoes are to be worn in the gym only; no outside street shoes will be allowed on the tumble trak. Dancers wear leotards, tights or t-shirt with dance appropriate pants. All ballet classes wear pink ballet shoes; hip hop classes wear black slip-on jazz shoes. Hair needs to be pulled back away from the face. No blue jeans or loose-fitting pants, please. Policy regarding observation of classes: Because students focus and concentrate better without mom or dad in the class, family and friends are not allowed to observe classes. Periodically we will offer “Watch Week”, a time family and friends are invited to watch their dancer during the last 15 minutes of class. “Watch Week” dates to be announced. PEKIN PARK DISTRICT 14
