So, if I am not chasing my son around on his bicycle, I am feeding, changing, or putting my daughter to sleep. Being a Dad is truly an honour and I am having the most fun I have had in ages. Actuarial Manager: Sales and VAPS Before you became a parent, how did you unwind? I am an avid fisherman so whenever I can, I go fishing. Two weeks ago, I took my son fishing and he really enjoyed it. Fishing is something that I try to squeeze in as often as I can because I enjoy it so much. Initially my challenge was to find a dam close by, but luckily, I’ve found a few spots. Modderfontein has an awesome dam for day fishing. My favourite fishing spot is in the “awabmtrisfniheIollsa’hlotyicmohtsreInhtowiennteavairsg, mremIigearmaeetsnam,.ed”n Free State - Allemanskraal Dam. My father and his brother grew up in the Free State and they used to fish there. In the same area there is a holiday resort called, Aldam Estate and it’s become a family tradition to visit the resort and fish once or twice a year. What is it that you enjoy about fishing? Fishing is the kind of sport that you either love or hate. There aren’t many people who enjoy fishing because it requires patience. Ironically, when I am fishing, I feel the most relaxed. Once I’ve cast a line into the water, I can happily sit back all day even if nothing bites. It’s my time to unwind and relax; I stare out at the dam and think. It’s a special treat when my dad joins me because we enjoy each other’s company. My dad and I have had some interesting encounters. When I was at varsity, I remember us going on a fishing trip for a week, and we didn’t catch a single fish! This happened twice [laughs]. MiStories - Ettiene Gertzen 53

Legal Manager You say you know how to shut down from work, so what do you do in your downtime? I love cooking! On Saturdays, you’ll probably find me making my famous ‘hard body’ chicken, that always has my family and friends begging for more. Oh, now here’s something not everyone knows about me: I binge watch any and every bit of reality TV I can find, all Saturday night, into Sunday morning! From the Real Housewives, to 90 Day Fiancé, even Basketball Wives. I tend to get too invested in them and I need to remind myself, it’s not my life. Not my circus, not my monkeys! [laughs] Who is your biggest inspiration, personally and professionally? My mother. Having been raised by my grandmother, I only got to know my mother much later in life. Oooh, my mother, she never quits, and believe it or not, at her age right now, she’s pursuing her matric certificate for the third time. My mother always says “As long as I’m not dead, I’m still valid. So, if you’re still alive, you have no reason to give up.” I also have a former boss, someone I still connect with to this very day. He’s great at offering me real perspective, telling me what I need to hear, even when it’s hard. If you could change one thing in our country, what would it be? To teach young boys, men, young and old, to shift their mindset about the role of women, the value of women, the purpose of women. Gender-based violence is what it is because few men are taught, from an early age to respect women. We matter. We are worthy. We are capable. We are strong. And if there is a culture that denigrates women, for the sake of culture, let me define my own. We find that in certain cultures, even women denigrate women. And we need to change that. Small steps, small actions, one step at a time. For example, we could start by offering the same school subjects to girls that are often reserved for boys. Small steps, small actions. Big changes, big outcomes. ata‘wewt“gehOtsveieaenekMuemarsbrasyirWen’tehsyhatioeny!”nr,gee, MiStories - Dineo Motlhamme 55

Christine Engelbrecht How long have you been at MiWay and what do you do at MiWay? I have been at MiWay for 14 years and three months. I was part of the first 50 people that were appointed before MiWay launched, and I have been part of the furniture ever since. I started as a PA to the former Head of Sales, Riaz Cassim. After three years in that role, I moved to HR where I became an HR Administrator and then in 2018, I was promoted to HR Team Leader. 58 MiStories - Christine Engelbrecht
HR Team Leader When you started 14 years ago, how did you hear about the job? And how did you hear about MiWay? My aunt Cathy was Riaz Cassim’s right-hand woman. I was living with my aunt at the time when she told me about the opportunity. I went for an interview and I was then offered the job and I have been here ever since. What has it been like to watch MiWay grow over the years to what it is now? It has been quite a journey from the time that we started up until now. When MiWay first started the business was quite small and I knew everyone, and everyone knew me. As the company has grown, I have had to accept that I don’t know all the departments like I did and there are also lots of people that I don’t know. That used to bug me, but the I realised that the company needs to grow; and it’s been amazing to watch it flourish. What’s really made MiWay super awesome is its culture. I think it’s important for people who work at MiWay to fit the culture of the organisation. To grow with the company you need to understand and respect its essence and culture. What influence did your upbringing have on the person you are today? My dad played an incredible role in my life, and although he passed away eleven years ago, he still has an impact on the way I live, the way I interact with others, and well, everything I do. He was always positive, regardless of just how rough things got. I grew up in Phoenix, where it could get rough. And it did. But he was rock-solid. He never got fixated on the negative stuff. Obstacles were things to be overcome, not things to hold one back. Speaking of which, my dad faced so many giant obstacles after a major car accident which saw him going through reconstructive surgery over a period of six months. He became iron man, literally with metal plates in so many parts of his body, including his face. It meant he’d always have trouble going through those machines at the airport, setting it off, with just his face…hahaha ha ha! I can’t be Iron Man, but I’m trying! 64 MiStories - Salesh Behari
Sales Manager What does family mean to you? Listening. Acceptance. Patience. Love. In our home, it was just my sister and me. And I have to confess, while I really did love her back then, and I still do today, there was a constant rivalry between us to be the favourite in the family. In some respects, I probably was. I was the eldest grandson after all…! [laughs]. I must tell you, I come from a big family. My paternal granny had nine brothers and two sisters, and my maternal grandfather had seven brothers. No TV back then, so our family gatherings were big! With so many different people, of different ages, you learn a lot about navigating a diversity of personalities and perspectives. About acceptance and patience. My favourite memory is that one time my granny forced me to sit with her, while she watched me peel a 10kg bag of potatoes for a wedding. At the time, I didn’t know why she insisted that we ‘do this together’, but oh, the stories she told me, the wisdom she shared with me…what a day! Looking back at that moment, I love her even more for it. So ja, for me, family means acceptance, patience and love. And of course, a whole lot of listening like I did while on potato-duty, a task I found myself bragging about afterwards, to anyone who would hear me…hahaha ha ha! I enjoy cycling, jogging and I play professional volleyball, which doesn’t always make my wife happy because it means I’m out a lot. Um, what else is there…? MiStories - Salesh Behari 65

Atalia Jacobs Legal Manager Karate is not the only superpower in Atalia’s wheelhouse. Much like Mr Miyagi’s protégé, Daniel-Son, she knows how to finish strong – in one of her races (yes, she loves running too!), she finished the last 50m of a 150m race with a ruptured muscle! In her earlier years, Atalia enjoyed both track and field events, including 400m hurdles, 4x100m relay, high jump and long jump. As if that was not enough to push her physical mettle to the limits, she also played ten- nis, making the cut for the first team when she was a wide-eyed 15 year old. She also obtained her Provincial Colours in Netball. Sport demands discipline in terms of eating habits, training, exercise and well, every aspect of your life. Is this something that comes naturally to you? I’ve always loved discipline, such that when I was in matric, I enrolled in the military. I wanted to be part of our country’s Defence Force. Many interviews, many medical and academic tests later, I was eligible to join the military and study through them, but I opted to pursue a Law Degree at TUKS. I wasn’t sure that the work-study life would work for me considering that I had to study for six years. I finally graduated and practiced as a litigation attorney before joining the insurance industry at OUTsurance. The discipline, karate-chopping, thrill-seeking adrenalin junkie who became a lawyer…? [Hhhmmm…I wonder who wins the everyday household disputes?] Funny thing is that I was probably a little more into discipline, as a lifestyle, than my dad, who also served in the military. A disciplinarian and his school deputy principal in both primary and high school, Ashik’s mother ran a tight ship and knew how to keep him in line. Her pragmatism played a big role in his decision to abandon his pursuit of a full-time career in the music industry, a deep passion, he says, will never leave him. You seem very clear that you made the right decision? I understood that music was a long road to stability, longer than a road which offered job and income se- curity. If that makes me a conformist, I’m ok with that. My bills are paid every month, I’m able to give my family – my wife and two girls, aged nine and five - a life they’re worthy of, because of ‘my conformity’. I’ve always listened to music differently, I appreciate the beats, the sound, the rhythm. I used to compose just about every day, and I’ve contributed to many local bands, which was so rewarding for me. Who’s influenced this ‘cool as a cucumber’ part of you the most? My sisters and I often talk about it, and I have to say, it’s my dad. I’m seeing more and more of him in my character. In fact, the parts of myself I love the most, I thank my dad for. My grandad too. Open-minded and so free, he ‘jumped ship’ in Mauritius all those years ago. And I love that! Who were you as a little girl? As the youngest of three girls, yes, I was doted on by my parents [giggles]. Obviously, when I was five years old, I had no idea who I wanted to be when I’d grow up. All I remember was lots of girlie tea parties and picking flowers in my mom’s garden. I also loved animals, so by the time I was 10 years old, I started thinking of a career as a vet, or doing something in conservation. When I was 16 years old, it was going to be a food tech, marine biology, or nature conservation career. What can you not leave home without? Lip balm. I had a side hustle because my salary wasn’t enough, I only earned R1400. In my spare time, I used to fit sound and security systems into cars because that was the KZN vibe. So, I made a little bit on the side; I think it was a bit of a hobby as well. I worked myself to the bone. I worked at the bank Monday to Saturday, then Friday to Sunday evening I was doing my side hustle. I did this for about three years and realized I didn’t have much to show for this work. But that is where my dedication, passion and commitment to work was established and I was able to continue with that momentum throughout my career. So, I wouldn’t want to change anything, if anything, I would say it paid off, because what happened then contributed to where I am now. MiStories - Burton Naicker 87
