STARS 2019/20 ANNUAL REPORT For The 2019/20 Fiscal Year THE POWER POSSIBLE
A LETTER FROM OUR LEADERS Dear Friends: 2019 marked the 13th year of Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports serving youth, adults, and military veterans with disabilities in a variety of outdoor activities. The year also marked STARS reaching new beginnings while also transitioning new leadership. In December, we celebrated the remarkable accomplishment of moving into the STARS Ranch, completing Phase 1 of a capital project that was 4 years in the making. The STARS Ranch includes a 27-bed lodge, commercial kitchen, great room, administrative offices, and an equipment building. If you have not seen it, please come by for a tour. On March 14th, the 2019-20 winter season ended abruptly due to COVID-19, but we still had much to celebrate. January brought our very first in-house groups staying at the beautiful Ranch facility with four ‘STARS and Stripes’ veterans’ camps, including 2 visually impaired groups, joining us for winter fun on the ski slopes. We are happy and grateful to report that our three fundraising events for the year were very successful bringing $388,000 of much needed revenue support for our operations. Farm to Barn, Biking the Boat, and Mountain Challenge events were critical fundraising events to help provide programming to participants, have the ability to give scholarships to those in need, and sustain our full-time staff. In March of 2020, the STARS Board of Directors welcomed Gardner Flanigan as Executive Director to lead STARS into the next chapter of serving our many participants. In other staffing news, Susan Petersen joined the STARS team in May as Development Director and long-time employee Ron Southworth was promoted to Program Director in September. Beginning in late June we were able to offer limited summer programming in a safe environment with our Youth Adventure Camp, Outdoor Explorers, Private and Semi-Private Therapy Riding Lessons, Western Adventure Camp, and Trailblazers for a number of local youth with disabilities. As our world continues to face challenges in many directions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are filled with gratitude for the elements that remain steady and constant. Our entire dedicated staff from last winter is returning for the 20/21 ski season, and we are so appreciative for the support we receive from our volunteers, generous donors, business partners and the Steamboat Springs community to continue to play an important part in delivering our mission to empower and enrich lives through adaptive recreational activities. This annual report highlights our continued commitment to the youth, adults, and veterans with cognitive or physical disabilities. Thank you for your ongoing support. What we do at STARS is more important now than ever before in the organization’s history. We take our responsibility to positively impact our participants lives very seriously, and we invite you to partner with us in 2020-21 to continue the legacy of Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports. With Gratitude, GARDNER FLANIGAN GAIL JENSEN Executive Director Board President

PARTICIPANTS SAY IT BEST Ellie Zwak, STARS Participant with “I’ve been part of STARS...gosh, I Program Director, Ron Southworth started in a bi ski and I was like, ten years old. After the bi ski thing, I switched to stand-up skiing and they had me tethered for the first couple of years. I’m really good now. I’m a pro. I can stop. Literally I can stop on skis! STARS is the best, and it’s the best because I show up knowing that you’re going to be here, and it makes me so happy. If there was no STARS, I don’t know what I would do. I look forward to it every day and get excited.” Ellie Zwak, STARS Participant VISIT STEAMBOATSTARS.COM OR CALL (970) 870-1950 TO DONATE

INTRODUCING “When I’d first come to STARS, we STARS RANCH would stay at the lodges, different hotels. And the experience was good, The STARS Ranch, a place for Hope and Healing, became but it wasn’t the same. Now that I’ve a reality as staff moved into the new administrative offices done the Ranch, it definitely wasn’t in December 2019. A vision that was 4 years in the making, the same because we’d go back for the STARS Ranch offers a healing environment for people the evening and just spread out and with disabilities, and their caregivers. The STARS Ranch just kind of chill on our own. But now, includes a 27-bed lodge, commercial kitchen, a Great Hall when we came back to the Ranch this gathering space, administrative offices, and an equipment time after skiing, it was just all the chat, building. Our 9-acre parcel of land has room for Phase 2 just constant. And everyone like, ‘Wow, which may include an equestrian facility, summer yurts what a day,’ and just talking about their and an accessible nature trail. experiences and just bonding a whole lot more now that we’re together, than it was when we were all separated in the evening.” Lonnie Bedwell, STARS & Stripes Veterans’ Camp Organizer and STARS Ranch Attendee
A PLACE FOR Lonnie Bedwell HOPE AND HEALING The beautiful lodge constructed by HLCC is a community asset providing accessible accommodations and a centralized hub for year- round programming for people with disabilities. Having a location like the STARS Ranch for groups to stay together allows for socialization opportunities, life skills learning, and an easy place to help support everyone’s needs in one accessible location. January brought our very first in-house groups staying at the beautiful Ranch facility with four ‘STARS and Stripes’ veterans’ camps, joining us for winter fun on the ski slopes and evenings filled with karaoke, storytelling, and sharing stories of experiences. Construction of the $6,200,000 lodge and equipment building completes Phase 1 of the STARS Ranch vision with donated funds and pledges of $5,567,000 raised to date.
