STARS 2021/22 Annual Report For The 2021/22 Fiscal Year
A Letter From Our Leaders Hello friends and supporters, For Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports, 2021/22 fiscal year will be remembered for incredible rejuvenation with programming bouncing back to 97% of pre-pandemic levels. This started with a summer that saw STARS move its equestrian facility to a beautiful new location at the D2 ranch (now called Zen Ranch) and rolling strong through a winter of continued transition with a temporary Base Camp location as the Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation undergoes an unprecedented base area development. During last fiscal year, it was wonderful to see our instructors, volunteers, and participants gearing up for a big day in the outdoors in the Yampa Valley. Overnight camps and groups also bounced back as STARS hosted 14 camps at the beautiful STARS Ranch facility. Camps ranged from kids’ groups from the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind, to Spinal Cord injury camps with the Craig Hospital and Access Adventures, to veterans’ groups with Team Semper Fi, our STARS & Stripes camps, and Visually Impaired veterans’ camps. The 2021/22 fiscal year saw STARS achieve unprecedented results in achieving our funding goals with three in-person fundraising events proving to be a great time for all with outstanding outcomes. It is always impressive and humbling to witness the show of support from donors and grants from foundations in supporting the belief in what STARS delivers. In short, a solid and heartfelt thank you from the entire STARS team to all of our participants, volunteers, and supporters who engaged with us last year. A huge thank you to our full-time and seasonal staff for their commitment to the mission and working overtime during peak programming to ensure the best experience possible for our participants. Looking ahead, we celebrate our 15th winter in a new Base Camp location at the Steamboat Ski Resort and look to grow our programming numbers while delivering on our mission to empower and enrich lives through adaptive recreational activities. Winter is here, so let’s hope for lots of the white stuff as we create possibilities on and off the mountain! In closing, we cannot adequately express our gratitude for our numerous partners in helping STARS continue to provide life-changing experiences for individuals with a disability. Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership! With sincere appreciation, GARDNER FLANIGAN JEFF MESSINGER Executive Director Board President

Participants Say It Best “Theo has been involved with STARS for several years now. Theo is bilaterally deaf and also has autism. He participates in the summer camp and also skiing in the winter. I feel like we are all family and the fact that most of the staff stays the same is fantastic as it keeps routine and familiarity for Theo, which is key for him. I do not think that Theo would be able to participate in most of the activities if it were not for the generous scholarships and the wonderful staff. He gets to do things that he probably wouldn’t get to do if not for STARS. In the time that he has been with STARS, Theo has gone from skiing with tethers, to skiing on his own. He has increased his stamina from 1 hour when he started to almost all 3 hours!! I got to ski with him a little last year and it was so much fun and I don’t think that would have happened if not for you. His instructor last year has ASL as a second language which is AMAZING as she was able to communicate with Theo in a whole new way and not everyone can do that! And the summer program is amazing as he has kayaked, gone horseback riding, biking, and hiking! And he has made so many friends, staff and fellow participants alike. It is nice being in a group where no one stares at you or makes fun of you. He has an amazing time with everyone and has truly grown personally, physically because of all of you. I truly appreciate the experiences that Theo has been able to have because of STARS! We are truly grateful and blessed for everyone involved in STARS!!” Jolene G. Theo’s mom
“No Greater Way To Help A Man Than To Heal A Man” “The STARS program has given me an opportunity to reconnect with the mountain life, with skiing. The chairlifts are still the same and the snow still makes the same noise when you ski on top of it whether you’re standing or sitting. Ron gives me the confidence I need to feel that sense of normalcy on the mountain. No greater way to help a man than to heal a man.” Ryan D. LOOKING TO VOLUNTEER WITH STARS? “My Experience Far Surpassed Any Expectations I Had” “My participation and experiences with the STARS program last year far surpassed any expectations I had going into the season as a volunteer. My personal situation was that I had just retired from my professional career and wanted “in a valuable way” to “give back” since I now had the time. I originally chose the STARS program because as a life-long skier I felt I had the skills needed to help our participants have a safe and great time enjoying Steamboat. I also thought I would enjoy the instructing experience. What I did not expect was that for everything I put into it I got so much more out of it. There were so many spiritually strong moments with our participants (and parents/spouses), fun meeting and skiing with our veterans/service members and being part of a great team of STARS staff. It was a winter full of fun, smiles, adventure and personal challenges. The joy of accomplishment by our participants and in many cases, dreams coming true just filled my heart. For instance: The 8 year old boy who after a first day of ever being on skis looks up and says (with excitement in his eyes)....I Just Skied didn’t I! (He could not wait to show his dad!) Or the veteran who for the first time was able to enjoy powder skiing in the trees with his sit ski. He said it was the first day in a long time that he had not once all day thought about his pain or problems. I can’t think of a better and more rewarding way to give of my time and of myself! Proud to be part of such a great program and mission.” Sincerely, Dave Kocera STARS 2021/22 Volunteer Rookie of the Year
