THE BEGINNING OF THE WAR Hannibal had always hated Rome, since he was a little child. Hannibal even made a promise to his father which was: he would always hate Rome. He kept his promise. As he became a Carthaginian general, he attacked one of Rome´s allies in southern Spain. The war began in 218 B.C. Hnnibal outsmarted the Romans since they were planning a counterattack but Hannibal led thousands of soldiers (60.000 aprox.) and war elephants out of Spain and across the Alps to invade the Italian Peninsula. This caught the Romans by surprise. This is how the war started.
CARTHAGE IS DEFEATED After 17 years of war rome defeated carthage. you may ask how did rome defeated them? well the key to defeat hannibal was to invade his homeland, he went to save his homeland. This combined hannibal's weakened army was the key to romes success. the army was weakened because they didn't expect that the journey to rome was going to be so thought. This were the reasons why it was less complex for rome to defeat carthage on the second punic war.
