Martyrdom of Ordinary Life: Fortitude Our Lord is a God who deeply understands the weakness and brokenness of human nature. As Christ was preparing for His passion, He promised His disciples that He would not leave them abandoned but after Him would come the Holy Spirit, the Advocate. Although the disciples did not fully understand what He meant, Jesus knew that all men and women would need help in living a faithful life; which is why we need the Holy Spirit. Through the Holy Spirit, we are given seven gifts which help sustain the Christian life. One of those gifts is ‘fortitude’ which the Catechism of the Catholic Church defines as “the moral virtue that ensures firmness in difficulties and constancy in the pursuit of the good. It strengthens the resolve to resist temptations and to overcome obstacles in the moral life” (CCC 1808). For Christians, then, the model and source of fortitude is Christ himself. He provides us with a constant example, going to the extreme of giving up his life for love of us. He also tells us that \"without me, you can do nothing.\" Christian fortitude makes it possible for us to follow Christ day after day. Fortitude helps us realize that true happiness lies in following God's will, even though fear, prolonged effort, mental or physical suffering, or danger may mask that fact, or threaten to put us off course. From the beginning, Christians considered it a privilege to suffer martyrdom, for they recognized that it meant full identification with Christ. Throughout history, the Church has kept up the tradition of giving particular veneration to martyrs, those who by a special gift of grace, shed their blood to proclaim their faithfulness to Jesus, thus offering the supreme example not only of fortitude, but also of Christian witness. Although there have been martyrs in every age, especially our own, for most Christians these days it is unlikely that we will ever be in that situation. Nevertheless, as Pope Benedict XVI has reminded us, there is also a \"martyrdom of ordinary life\", a testimony that today's world needs very badly. There is the silent and heroic testimony of \"so many Christians who live Christianity without compromise, fulfilling their duty and dedicating themselves generously to the service of the poor.\" Here our eyes turn naturally to our Blessed Mother, for she stood at the foot of her Son's Cross, giving an example of extraordinary fortitude without suffering physical death, to such an extent that she can be truly called a martyr without dying, as in an ancient liturgical prayer: \"Blessed be the Virgin Mary who at the foot of the cross merited the palm of martyrdom without dying.\" As St Josemaría wrote, \"Marvel at Mary's courage: at the foot of the Cross, with the greatest of human sorrows – there is no sorrow like her sorrow – filled with fortitude. And ask her for that same strength, so that you too can remain beside the Cross.\" May we as Christians, call upon the Holy Spirit for this special gift to rise up to the challenges we face today. Through the mystery of Jesus Christ, we know that “our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us” (Rom 8:18). Although many of us will not be called to martyrdom, we are called to be witnesses of the gospels and joyfully unite our daily struggles and challenges to the Cross. Our dear St John Paull II writes “There are many, a great many manifestations of fortitude, often heroic, of which nothing is written in the newspapers, or of which little is known. Only human conscience knows them ... and God knows! I wish to pay tribute to all these unknown courageous people. To all those who have the courage to say \"no\" or \"yes\", when they have to pay a price to do so! To the men who bear an extraordinary witness to human dignity and deep humanity. Just because they are unknown, they deserve a tribute and special recognition.” Come Holy Spirit and teach how to endure our daily crosses and provide us with Your gifts and fruits to persevere in this life and pursue the Heart of Christ. Amen. - Anita Malika

Relationships & Mutual Understanding I would like to talk about how we encounter relationships in our day to day life. The word Relationship simply means the way in which two or more people, groups, and countries behave toward and deal with each other. According to Anthony Giddens PHD, a British Sociologist, “a relationship will only carry on being successful as long as the relationship is meeting the individual’s partners needs and they benefit from it”. Let us analyze some of the essential factors from our daily practical lives which may positively influence our relationships: 1. Effective two-way communications: Communication is the two-way process of reaching A MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING in which participants not only exchange information’s, ideas, and feelings but also create and share a meaningful dialogue. Do you think we are communicating effectively as always? Obviously, your answer may be Yes, but in the reality, it’s NO. In order to communicate effectively, your way of communication should be kind, honest, and consistent. Without consistent communication, your relationship will not survive. The more you communicate with each other, the closer you will be. 2. Mutual-Understanding: Mutual-Understanding is empathy towards each other. Whatever affects one correspondingly affects the other. Having a mutual understanding of each other’s feelings, needs and, wants are essential to maintain such mutual understanding. Here I’m going to share some tips which I think can help you to foster your mutual understanding ability: (a)Think before you speak. (b) Accepting each other’s flaws. (c) Taking a step back to calm down. (d) Being real and transparent. 3. Self-Love: Self-love is your ability to recognize and prioritize your happiness and well-being in everything you do in your day to day life. You need to love yourself first in order to get into a relationship and to sustain that relationship. 4. Self-Respect: This is always the name of the game without further explanations. 5. Mutual-Trust: Trust is the faith you have in someone that they will always remain loyal to you and love you. To trust someone means that you can rely on them and are comfortable confiding in them because you feel safe with them. 6. Being able to admit mistakes and to talk about them: No one is perfect. We all have faults and make mistakes. We need to learn to understand and let go of mistakes from you or your partner. Sincerely talking about mistakes that happen in a relationship is a key to solving many of the inter-personal relationship problems. This will help bring peace and joy into your relationship. As a conclusion, Compassion, Acceptance, and Forgiveness are three cornerstones of any relationships. These are the key qualities that will help you throughout your relationship even through the difficult times. Especially during the present COVID-19 pandemic, these cornerstones will be helpful to remember. There are some things you just can’t fix it in a relationship but you accept it, adjust it, and move on. It reminds me of the old adage - \"Known is a drop; unknown is an ocean\". Weathering the storms together is a big part of what relationships are all about! - Joseph Ammakil

A Memorable Farewell On behalf of the New Jersey Christ the King Knanaya Catholic Church, I would like to write a brief farewell message to Renny Achan, as we call him affectionately. I am sad to say that after serving over 8 years as the Spiritual Director/Pastor of our community and church, Renny Achan is leaving us. He will be serving in Dallas, Texas which will be his new home. One day we all need to bid farewell to someone special in our life. Some people come into our lives and leave suddenly while others leave a huge impact and awaken us to a new understanding with their shared wisdom. They stay in our lives for a while, leave footprints on our hearts, and we never end up staying the same person as before. Renny Achan is one of those people who has made such an immense impact in our community. We were very fortunate to have him. It was a pleasure and privilege to have associated with Renny Achan. He had the wisdom to bring the best out in each one of us. He made our lives easy by procuring our own church which is a milestone in the history of our community. There is heaviness in our hearts as we say goodbye. Farewells are never easy especially after Renny Achan’s service of 8 years and becoming so close to all the parishioners. Eight years filled with many memorable memories. Renny Achan’s contributions to the church have been immense and tremendous. We appreciate the work and services he has provided us through this time. He has left a huge mark in our community and we are deeply thankful to him. This is a difficult time but leaving is sometimes inevitable. Renny Achan, as you serve your new role as Pastor of Christ the King Knanaya Church in Dallas, we are praying for your continued good health in order to keep doing well in your next job. Thank you for all that you have done for us. May God bless you for becoming such an impact to all of us and our community. You will always be remembered. May those you love bring love back to you and may all your wishes come true. With only one request, please remember us in your prayers, we bid you farewell with a heavy heart. All the best and good luck in your future endeavors. We will miss you. Alex Nedumthuruthil PRO, New Jersey Christ The King Knanaya Catholic Church
