PREFACE Praise be to Allah , Lord of the Worlds. Blessings and Salaams on Prophet Muhammad , his family and his companions. We praise Allah  and thank Him for His Countless Blessings upon us. The title of the book, HIFZ is an Arabic word, which literally means the memorization of any information. The meaning of the word in common usage, refers specifically to the memorization of the Holy Qur’aan. We have thus used it in its original meaning and it refers, to the memorization of the short Surahs from the Holy Qur’aan, as well as the Du`aas for daily use found in the Sunnah. In short, this series of books, which have been compiled for learners, includes not only all the Arabic components of Salaah, but also, the various supplications required in the life of a Muslim on a daily basis, as Allah  states in the Holy Qur’aan:- And your Lord says: \"Call on Me; I will answer your (Prayer) [Surah Ghafir (40), Verse 60] Furthermore, the Prophet  has said: Supplication is the essence of worship. (Tirmizi) Today we find ourselves in a situation where we rapidly assimilate knowledge, sometimes without giving due importance to its manifestation in our day to day lives. Keeping this in mind, this series has been compiled with the intention of instilling a love for the way of life of our illustrious Prophet Muhammad . The salient feature of this series is that, together with the Arabic text and the translation of each supplication, the etiquettes and virtues as contained in The Sunnah, have also been included. This is done with the aim of motivating the reader to act according to the Sunnah in such a manner, that the various supplications do not remain as mere verbal ritualistic incantations.

Another noteworthy feature is the summarization at the end of each Surah, which will Inshaa Allah, prove to be invaluable in giving the reader an insight into the message of the Holy Qur’aan. Finally, it must be remembered that this series has been compiled with the following objectives:- 1. The memorization and consequently the recitation of the Arabic text with the correct Tajweed (rules of recitation) and Makhaarij (pronunciation of the letters). 2. The understanding of the meaning and message of each Du`aa and Surah. 3. The practical application of the different etiquettes on a daily basis. NB: The achievement of these objectives is dependent largely upon the educators and parents. Although this series is primarily compiled as standard textbooks for the madaaris, its usage will be immeasurably beneficial to all, Inshaa Allah. We hope that this series will enlighten many minds, inspire many hearts and motivate readers into memorizing its contents and applying it to their daily lives. We humbly request our learners and readers to ask Allah  to Bless all those who have played a role in the compilation and publication of this series. May Allah  grant us forgiveness, steadfastness & dedication to serve Him. Ameen. This icon denotes additional information. DEPARTMENT OF HIFZ Islamic Educational Organisation of Southern Africa

SURAHS SURATUL KAAFIROON 1. Say! “O disbelievers. 2. I do not worship what you worship. 3. Nor will you worship that which I worship. 4. And I shall not be a worshipper of what you worship. 5. Nor will you worship that which I worship. 6. To you your religion and to me my religion.” 1

SUMMARY This surah was revealed because the disbelievers of Quraysh asked the Prophet  to worship their idols for a year and they in turn would worship Allah  the next year. The disbelievers of Quraysh thought that in this manner they could make everyone happy. The Prophet  did not agree. From this Surah, we learn that:- 1. Allah  told the Prophet  to tell the disbelievers that he will not worship what they worship (idols) even for a second and they (the disbelievers) are not worshippers of what he (the Prophet ) worships (i.e. Allah ). So to them (the disbelievers) their religion and to him (the Prophet ) his religion (i.e. Islam). 2. We do not do things that are wrong to make people happy. We only do what is right and correct - this is what pleases Allah . 3. We follow Islam only. 4. We worship Allah  only in the way shown to us by the Prophet . We do not follow our desires as the disbelievers do. Allah  says in the Holy Qur’aan regarding the disbelievers in Surah An- Najm (53), Verse 23: “They are but names (of the idols) which you have named – you and your fathers – for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord!” 2

SURATUL FEEL 1. Have you not seen how Your Lord dealt with the people of the elephant? 2. Did He not make their treacherous plan go astray? 3. And He sent against them birds in flocks. 4. Pelting them with stones of baked clay. 5. Thus He made them like devoured dry straw. 3

SUMMARY This surah tells us about the incident of the elephants which took place in the year that the Prophet  was born. Abrahah, the governor of Yemen, built a huge church in competition to the Ka`bah with the hope of attracting the Arabs to his church. However, the Arabs did not turn away from the Ka`bah and this angered Abrahah and he made up his mind to destroy the Ka`bah. He marched with a great army equipped with elephants and sent a messenger to the Chief of Makkah, Abdul Muttalib, to tell him that he did not come to fight the Makkans but to demolish the Ka`bah. Abdul Muttalib asked for the return of his camels which were taken by Abrahah. Abrahah was surprised that he was not concerned about the Ka`bah. Abdul Muttalib replied: “I am the master of the camels, the Ka`bah has its own Master, He will protect it.” In the meantime, Allah  sent a flock of birds to stone the attackers with stones of sand and clay. Abrahah and his army were completely destroyed. In this Surah we learn that Allah  has the power over everything. HE () destroyed such a mighty force so easily by making small birds to throw the stones. This is a proof that Islam is the true religion and the K`abah is Baytullah House of Allah). In Surah Aali-`Imraan (3), Verse 96 Allah  says: “Verily the first house (of worship) appointed for mankind was that at Bakkah (Makkah), full of blessing, and a guidance for Al `Aalameen.” Then in Surah Al-Baqarah (2), Verse 125, Allah  says: “And (remember) when We made the House (the Ka`bah) a place of resort for mankind and a place of safety. And take you (people) the Maqaam (place) of Ibraheem  (the stone on which Ibraheem stood while he was building the Ka`bah) as a place of prayer, and We commanded Ibraheem  and Isma`eel  that they should purify My House (Ka`bah) for those who are circumambulating it, or staying (I`tikaaf), or bowing or prostrating themselves (there, in prayer).” 4

SURATUL HUMAZAH 1. Woe! To every slanderer, backbiter, 2. Who amasses wealth and counts it. 3. He thinks that his wealth will make him last forever. 4. By no means! He will be flung into the crushing one. 5. And what will explain to you what the crushing one is? 6. (It is) The kindled fire of Allah. 7. Which rages over (mens) hearts. 8. Verily it will close in upon them (from all sides), 9. In columns outstretched. 5

SUMMARY This Surah which was revealed to Prophet Muhammad  in Makkah, condemns all sort of scandal, backbiting and selfish hoarding of wealth, because they destroy the hearts and affections of man. Every person who slanders others and backbites habitually, who amasses wealth and counts it over and over again will be doomed. They think that their wealth will remain with them forever or make them immortal and they never care to think that a time will come when they will have to depart from this world. Hadrat Abu Hurairah  reported the Prophet  as saying: “When a man dies, his acts come to an end except three, recurring charity, or knowledge (by which people) benefit, or a pious son who prays for him.” (Muslim) In Surah Al-Hujuraat (49), Verse 12 Allah  says:- “O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion; indeed some suspicions are sins. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allah. Verily Allah is the One Who forgives and accepts repentance, Most Merciful.” 6

SURATUT TAKAATHUR 1. The rivalry for worldly gain distracts you. 2. Until you visit the graves. 3. Nay, you shall soon know. 4. Again, you shall soon know. 5. Nay! Were you to know with certainty of mind. 6. You shall certainly see the Hell fire. 7. Again, you shall see it with certainty of sight. 8. Then on that Day you shall be questioned about the pleasures (you enjoyed). 7

SUMMARY This Surah draws attention to the fact that man’s greed for wealth has no limits and to the fact that abundance of worldly goods and the comforts of this life is the greatest obstacle which keeps man away from the real object of life. Visit the graveyard frequently as this will make you realize that the ultimate abode is the Hereafter, and to achieve good in the Hereafter we must fulfill Allah’s  orders in this world. Once we have reached our graves, then it will be too late to realize the truth. Then the true reality will appear before us. Why not strive for that reality in this very life? If we do not use our reasoning faculties now, we shall yet see with our own eyes, in the Hereafter, the penalty for our sins. We shall be questioned about the pleasures that we enjoyed in this world. In Surah Yaseen (36), Verse 65, Allah  says:- “This Day, we shall seal up their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their legs will bear witness to what they used to earn.” 8

KALIMAH RADD-E-KUFR O Allah! I seek protection in You from joining partners to You knowingly and I seek Your forgiveness from what I do not know and I repent and free myself from disbelief and joining partners with You and from all sins. I submit to Your Will, I believe and I say: There is no god but Allah and Muhammad  is Allah’s Messenger. 9

DU`AA AFTER WUDU O Allah! make me of the repenters and make me of the purified. Wudu is the key to Salaah. If our Wudu is not performed correctly, our Salaah will not be accepted by Allah . Therefore, we must perform our Wudu correctly. Hadrat `Umar  narrated that the Prophet  said: “If one after performing ablution completely, recites the Kalimah Shahaadah and the above Du`aa, all the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him and he may enter through any gate he wishes.” (Muslim, Tirmizi) 10

DU`AA WHEN LEAVING HOME (I leave) In the name of Allah (and) I have put my trust in Allah, and there is no power and no might except with Allah. On leaving home, one should recite the above Du`aa. It is important that we must put our trust in Allah  daily before leaving home and to have Allah`s  protection with us. Hadrat Anas  reported that the Prophet  said: “When a man comes out of his house and recites the above du`aa, he is addressed at that time: “This is sufficient for you. You are protected, saved and guided.” The Shaitaan leaves him alone, saying to another Shaitaan, “How can you tackle a man who is guided, saved and well-protected?” (Abu Dawud) 11

DU`AA FOR FASTING O Allah! I shall fast for You tomorrow. Fasting is one of the Pillars of Islam. It is Fard upon Muslims to fast in Ramadaan. Prophet Muhammad  said: “The fragrance of the mouth of a fasting person is more pleasant to Allah  than the smell of musk.” (Ahmad, Baihaqi) DU`AA ON BREAKING FAST O Allah! I have fasted for You and I believe in You and I am breaking my fast with the food given by You. Hadrat Mu`aaz bin Zahrah  reported that when the Prophet  broke fast, he used to say: “O Allah, for you I fasted and over your provision I broke it.” (Abu Dawud) 12

DU`AA AFTER DRINKING WATER All praise be to Allah Who gave us sweet water to drink through His Mercy and did not make it bitter because of our sins. 1. Hadrat `Umar  reported that the Prophet  said: None of you must eat or drink with his left hand as the Shaitaan eats and drinks with the left hand. (Muslim) 2. Hadrat Ibn Abbas  has reported that the Prophet  said: Do not drink (water) in a single breath like the camel, but drink it with 2 or 3 pauses. Mention the name of Allah when you start drinking and praise Him () when you finish. (Tirmizi) 3. Hadrat Ibn Abbas  has reported that the Prophet  prohibited from breathing into or blowing upon a vessel from which one drinks. (Tirmizi) 4. Hadrat Anas  has reported that Prophet  forbade that a person should drink while standing. (Muslim) 5. Look into the water before drinking. 6. One should not drink from the chipped end of a cup. (Abu Dawud) 13

DU`AA ON WEARING CLOTHES All praise be to Allah Who clothed me with that through which I cover my body and through which I attain beauty in my life. 1. Recite the above Du`aa on wearing clothes. 2. Hadrat Abu Huraira  reported that when the Prophet  put on his garment he began from his right side. (Tirmizi) 3. When removing the clothes begin from the left side. (Tirmizi) 14

WHEN A LOSS OCCURS To Allah we belong and to Him is our Return. [Surah Al-Baqarah (2) : Verse 156] In Surah Aali`-Imraan (3), Verse 185, Allah  says:- “Everyone shall taste death. And only on the Day of Resurrection shall you be paid your wages in full. And whoever is removed away from the fire and admitted to Paradise, he indeed is successful. The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception.” In Surah Al-Ambiyaa (21), Verse 93 Allah  says:- “But they have broken up and differed as regards their religion among themselves. (And) they shall return to us.” It is clearly stated in the Qur’aan that we will surely return to Allah . Therefore we must prepare for our death, because this life of ours is a passing phase and death will soon put an end to it. We must remember to recite the above Du`aa whenever we hear of a loss or experience a loss, be it of a person or of an object. 15

SALAAH (DUROOD) AND SALAAM O Allah, Shower Your Blessings upon our Leader Muhammad and upon the family of our Leader Muhammad and Shower Your Favour and send salutations (upon him). In Surah Al-Ahzaab (33), Verse 56 Allah  says: “Verily, Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet, O you who believe, send blessings on him, and salute him with all respect”. Hadrat Abu Huraira  reports that the Prophet  said: “Allah sends ten blessings upon the person who sends one blessing on me.” (Muslim, Abu Dawud). Hadrat Anas  narrates that the Prophet  said: “If one hears my name, he should send blessings upon me. When a person sends one blessing upon me, Allah  sends ten blessings upon him, forgives ten sins and raises him by ten degrees (in Jannah).” (Ahmad, Nasai) Hadrat Ibn-e-Masud  reports that the Prophet  said: “The person who sends blessings upon me abundantly, will be nearest to me on the Day of Judgement.” (Tirmizi). 16

NIYYAH FOR ZUHR SALAAH I pray four Raka`aat Sunnah of Zuhr I pray four Raka`aat Fard of Zuhr I pray two Raka`aat Sunnah of Zuhr I pray two Raka`aat Nafl of Zuhr 17

NIYYAH FOR `ASR SALAAH I pray four Raka`aat Sunnah of `Asr I pray four Raka`aat Fard of `Asr 18

Salaah is the most important of all forms of worship. It is the first and foremost action to be reckoned for on the Day of Judgement. Therefore one should observe Salaah at the appointed times, with a perfect Wudu and complete devotion. The regular observance of Salaah helps in strengthening one`s faith in Allah . In Surah Al-Ma`aarij (70) Verses 34,35 Allah  says: “And those who guard their Salaah well, such shall dwell in the Gardens (Paradise) honoured.” In Surah Al-`Ankaboot (29) Verse 45, Allah  says: “Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book (the Qur’aan), and establish regular Salaah; for Salaah restrains from shameful and unjust deeds; And rememberance of Allah is the greatest without doubt. And Allah knows what you do.” Hadrat Abu Huraira  narrates that once the Prophet  asked his companions, “Do you believe that dirt can remain on a person bathing five times a day in a stream running in front of his door?” “No, replied the companions, “No dirt can remain on his body.” The Prophet  remarked, “Similar is the effect of Salaah offered five times a day. With the Grace of Allah  it washes away all the sins.” (Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmizi, Nasai) Hadrat Huzaifa  says that, “Whenever the Prophet  happened to face any difficulty, he would at once resort to Salaah.” (Ahmad, Abu Dawud) 19
