PREFACE Praise be to Allah , Lord of the Worlds. Blessings and Salaams on Prophet Muhammad , his family and his companions. We praise Allah  and thank Him for His Countless Blessings upon us. The title of the book, Hifz, is an Arabic word, which literally means the memorization of any information. The meaning of the word in common usage, refers specifically to the memorization of the Holy Qur’aan. We have thus used it in its original meaning and it refers to the memorization of the short Surahs from the Holy Qur’aan as well as the Du`aas for daily use found in the Sunnah. In short, this series of books which have been compiled for learners, includes not only all the Arabic components of Salaah, but also various supplications required in the life of a Muslim on a daily basis, as Allah  states in the Holy Qur’aan: And your Lord says: \"Call on Me; I will answer your (Prayer)” [Surah Ghafir (40), Verse 60] Furthermore, the Prophet  has said: “Supplication is the essence of worship.” (Tirmizi) Today we find ourselves in a situation where we rapidly assimilate knowledge, sometimes without giving due importance to its manifestation in our day to day lives. Keeping this in mind, this series has been compiled with the intention of instilling a love for the way of life of our illustrious Prophet Muhammad . The salient feature of this series is that, together with the Arabic text and the translation of each supplication, the etiquettes and virtues as contained in The Sunnah, have also been included. This is done with the aim of motivating the reader to act according to the Sunnah in such a manner, that the various supplications do not remain as mere verbal ritualistic incantations.

Another noteworthy feature, is the summarization at the end of each Surah, which will Inshaa’Allah, prove to be invaluable in giving the reader an insight into the message of the Holy Qur’aan. Finally, it must be remembered that this series has been compiled with the following objectives:- 1. The memorization and consequently the recitation of the Arabic text with the correct Tajweed (rules of recitation) and Makhaarij (pronunciation of the letters). 2. The understanding of the meaning and message of each Du`aa and Surah. 3. The practical application of the different etiquettes on a daily basis. NB: The achievement of these objectives is dependent largely upon the educators and parents. Although this series is primarily compiled as standard textbooks for the madaaris, its usage will be immeasurably beneficial to all, Inshaa’Allah. We hope that this series will enlighten many minds, inspire many hearts and motivate readers into memorizing its contents and applying it to their daily lives. We humbly request our learners and readers to ask Allah  to Bless all those who have played a role in the compilation and publication of this series. May Allah  grant us forgiveness, steadfastness & dedication to serve Him. Ameen. This icon denotes additional information. DEPARTMENT OF HIFZ Islamic Educational Organisation of Southern Africa

SURAHS SURATUL BAYYINAH 1

1. Those who have disbelieved from among the people of the Book and the polytheists could not break off (from disbelief) until there came to them the Evidence, 2. A Messenger from Allah, conveying (to them) revelations blessed with purity, 3. Wherein are laws right and straight. 4. And those who were given the Book did not differ until after there came to them the evidence, 5. And they were not commanded except that they should worship Allah, sincerely in their Faith, as upright men devoted to Allah alone, and that they should establish regular Prayer, and give Charity, and that is the Straight Religion. 6. Verily, those who disbelieve from among the people of the Book and among the polytheists (those who assign partners to Allah () will be in the fire of Hell, to dwell therein; they are the worst of creatures. 7. Verily, those who believe and do righteous deeds, they are the best of creatures. 8. Their reward is with their Lord (in) gardens of eternal bliss, beneath which rivers flow, to dwell therein forever, Allah is well pleased with them and they are well pleased with Him, all this for him who fears his Lord. 2

SUMMARY OF SURATUL BAYYINAH The Holy Prophet  received the seal of the Divine Revelations, namely Al-Qur`aan Al-Kareem. Therefore the Holy Qur'aan and the Prophet Muhammad  are the Clear Evidence. Allah  distinguished truth from falsehood, because the revelations, as this Surah shows, contains all the pure and essential teachings of the previous scriptures. Thus, this surah emphasises that Prophet Muhammad  is the continuation and seal of all Divine Revelations. This surah should also serve as a warning to Muslims not to allow false beliefs to be mixed up with the true religion, leading to disunity among the believers. Allah  then says that those who still deny the truth, in spite of the clear evidence brought to them by Prophet Muhammad  will enter Hell. They have rejected Allah's  Guidance and His Noble Purpose in creating them and are therefore the worst of creations. Those who believe and do good are the best of creatures. They will find their reward with Allah  in the beautiful garden of Paradise, where they will eternally. Allah  will be well pleased with them and they will be well pleased with Allah . Abu Bakrah  reports that a man enquired, O Messenger of Allah , who amongst men is best the best? He () said: “He whose age is long and whose actions are good.” He enquired who amongst men are the worst? He () said: “He whose age is long and whose actions are bad.” [Ahmad, Tirmizi] 3

SURATUL `AADIYAAT 4

1. By the (steeds) that run with panting (breath). 2. And striking sparks of fire, 3. Raiding their enemies at dawn, 4. And thereby raising dust, 5. And penetrating into the midst (of the foe). 6. Verily, man is ungrateful to his Lord. 7. And to that he himself is a witness, 8. And he is violent in his love of wealth. 9. Does he not know, when, that which is buried in the graves is scattered? 10. And that which is in the breasts (of men) becomes known? 11. Verily, on that day their Lord will be well acquainted with them. SUMMARY OF SURATUL `AADIYAAT In the first 5 verses of this Surah, Allah  takes an oath by the warhorses that were used by the Arabs during battle. Allah  describes the strength and speed with which these horses penetrated the ranks of the enemy line. In verse 6 Allah  is reminding man about his ungratefulness to Him. Therefore it is important that we appreciate Allah`s Blessings upon us and remember Him. In Surah Ibraaheem (14), Verse 7 Allah  says: “And remember when your Lord proclaimed: if you are grateful (to Me), I will give you more (of My Blessings); but if you are ungrateful, verily My punishment is indeed severe.” Then verses 9-11 portray the scene of Resurrection. On that day man shall proceed from their graves to the Plain of Resurrection. There, their actions and deeds shall be shown to them. The smallest possible action of every soul, good or bad shall be before him. Every soul will witness how Allah  deals with each action. In Surah Yaaseen (36) Verse 54 Allah  says: “This Day (of Resurrection) none will be wronged in anything, nor will you be rewarded anything except that which you used to do. 5

SURATUL INSHIRAAH 1. Have we not expanded for you your chest? 2. And we removed for you your burden? 3. That had weighed down your back? 4. And raised for you your esteem? 5. So verily, with every difficulty, there is relief. 6. Verily, with every difficulty, there is relief. 7. Therefore when you have completed (your worldly duties), turn to worship. 8. And turn your attention to Your Lord. 6

SUMMARY OF SURATUL INSHIRAAH This Surah portrays the Divine care for Prophet Muhammad  such as giving him solace, relieving his difficulties and praising his name. In Surah Al-Hijr (15), Verse 97, Allah  said to Prophet Muhammad : “We do indeed know how your breast is distressed at what they say.” In this Surah Allah  consoles the Prophet  by saying that He has expanded his breast. This made it easy for the Prophet  to receive Divine Revelation and propagate Islam with ease and confidence. Allah  tells us that He Himself has raised Prophet Muhammad’s  esteem, honour and fame. In Surah Al-Ahzaab (33), Verse 56 Allah  tells us that He and the Angels continuously send Blessings on Prophet Muhammad  and commands us that we the Believers must also send Salaah (Durood) and Salaams to him. Can there be greater honour, remembrance and status than this? Prophet Muhammad  is remembered after Allah  by Muslims worldwide in the Azaan, Iqaamah, Salaah, Du`aas, sending of Salaah (Durood) and Salaams. Prophet Muhammad  is also remembered in the Heavens, Sidratul Muntaha, etc. Allah  promises that with every difficulty there is relief. When one remains patient during hardships and puts his trust in Allah  and does not become despondent, Allah  surely creates ease for him. In Surah At Talaaq (65) Verses 2-3 Allah  says: AAnd whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him. Verily Allah  will accomplish his purpose. Indeed Allah has set a measure for all things.” Finally, Allah  says that when one has completed one’s worldly duties, then one should turn to Allah  in prayer. 7

DU`AA AFTER SALAAH My Lord! make me one who establishes regular Salaah, and (also raise such) among my off-spring, our Lord! and accept my prayer. Our Lord! forgive me and my parents and the believers on the day that the reckoning will take place. [Surah Ibraaheem (14): Verse 40-41] Salaah is the best way to communicate with Allah . One of the favours showered on a person who performs his Salaah is that his Du`aas are answered. Abu Umamah  reports: It was said: “O Messenger of Allah , which supplication (Du`aa) is most accepted. He () said: (One) in the middle of the latter part of the night and at the end of the ordained (Fard) prayers.” [Tirmizi] Therefore, we must take the opportunity and always ask Allah  to forgive us, our parents and believers by reciting the above Du`aa. 8

Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves and if You do not forgive us and do not have Mercy upon us, we shall certainly be lost. [Surah Al-A`raaf (7): Verse 23] After Allah  had created Hadrat Aadam  and Hawa  they stay in Jannah. Allah  told them to enjoy all that was provided in Jannah, but He  commanded them not to go to a certain tree. However, Shaytaan said to them: “Your Lord did not forbid you this tree save that you should become angels or become of the immortals. “And he (Shaytaan) swore by Allah to them both (saying): “Verily, I am one of the sincere well-wishers for you both.” So Shaytaan misled them both with deception. Then when they tasted of the tree, that which was hidden from them of their shame became manifest to them and they began to cover themselves with the leaves of Jannah. And their Lord called out to them: “Did I not forbid you that tree and tell you: Verily, Shaytaan is an open enemy unto you?” [Surah Al A`raaf (7):20-22] Allah  sent Hadrat Aadam  and Hawwa  down to earth. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2), Verse 36 Allah said: “Get you down, all, with enmity between yourselves. On earth will be a dwelling place for you and an enjoyment for a time.” Whilst on earth Hadrat Aadam  was inspired by Allah  with words of repentance. [Surah Al-Baqarah (2), Verse 37] The above Du`aa is the words through which Hadrat Aadam  was inspired by Allah  and through which his repentance was accepted. From the above verses, we learn that Allah  Guided man right from the time of Aadam  and Allah  says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2) Verse 38 that: “Whoever follows My Guidance, there shall be no fear on them, nor shall they grieve.” 9

DU`AA WHEN VISITING A SICK PERSON Do not despair. This is a cleansing (of sins), If Allah wills. Do not despair. This is a cleansing (of sins), If Allah wills. O Allah! cure him. O Allah grant him recovery from all illnesses. Hadrat Ali  reported that the Prophet  said: ”When a Muslim enquires about the health of another sick Muslim at dawn, seventy thousand Angels continue seeking salvation for him till dusk. If he visits him in the evening seventy thousand Angels continue invoking blessings on him till the morning and he will have gathered fruit in Paradise.” [Tirmizi] Therefore, we should make it our duty to visit the sick and recite the above Du`aa. Hadrat Abu Hurayrah  reports that the Prophet  said: “For every misfortune, illness, anxiety, grief or hurt that afflicts a Muslim, even the hurt caused by the pricking of a thorn, Allah  removes some of his sins. [Bukhari, Muslim] 10

JANAAAZAH SALAAH NIYYAH I pray to Allah the Most High and I seek forgiveness for this dead (person). I follow this Imaam. Maq’al bin Yasar  reported that the Prophet  said: Read Surah Yaaseen over your dying man. [Ahmad, Abu Dawood, Ibn Majah] Ayesha  reported that a man said to the Prophet : My mother passed away suddenly and she did not make any bequest and I think that if she had the chance she would have given charity, if I give charity on her behalf will she receive the reward? The Prophet  answered, “Yes”. [Bukhari, Muslim] From this Hadith we learn that performance of good deeds like reciting the Qur’aan with the intention of sending the reward to the deceased is regarded as virtuous. 11

FIRST TAKBEER After (the first Takbeer) recite:- THANA Hands should be raised when saying this Takbeer. Note that the Imaam only, recites the Takbeers loudly. The followers should repeat the Takbeers after him, but silently. Note also that the hands are raised at the time of reciting the first Takbeer only. Glory be to You O Allah! and praise be to You, and Blessed is Your name, and Exalted is Your majesty, and High is Your praise, and there is no god besides You. 12

SECOND TAKBEER After (the second Takbeer) recite:- DUROOD IBRAHEEM O Allah! Shower Your blessings upon Muhammad  and upon the family of Muhammad  as You showered Your blessings upon Ibraaheem  and upon the family of Ibraaheem . Verily, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah! Shower your favour upon Muhammad  and upon the family of Muhammad  as You showered Your favour upon Ibraaheem  and upon the family of Ibraaheem . Verily, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. 13

THIRD TAKBEER After (the third Takbeer) recite:- DU`AA FOR JANAAZAH If the deceased is an adult, then the following Du`aa is read. DU`AA FOR JANAAZAH (ADULT) O Allah! Forgive our living and our dead, our present and our absent, our small and our big and our men and our women. O Allah! Whoever from amongst us is kept alive, keep him alive on the path of Islam. And whoever from amongst us You cause to die, let him die with Imaan (faith). 14

DU`AA FOR JANAAZAH (BOY) O Allah! Make him for us a source of salvation, and make him for us a source of reward and benefit, and make him for us an intercessor whose intercession has been accepted. DU`AA FOR JANAAZAH (GIRL) O Allah! Make her for us a source of salvation, and make her for us a source of reward and benefit, and make her for us an intercessor whose intercession has been accepted. 15

FOURTH TAKBEER After (the fourth Takbeer) terminate the Salaah with tasleem towards the right and left shoulder. SALAAM / TASLEEM Peace be upon you, and the Mercy of Allah. As death is inevitable, man must remember death at all times and what will occur after it. Constant remembrance of death protects man from sins. In Surah Al-Jumu`ah (62) Verse 8, Allah  says: “Say (to them): Verily, the death from which you flee will surely meet you, then you will be sent back to (Allah), the All Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will tell you what you used to do.” 16

DU`AA WHEN ENTERING THE GRAVEYARD Peace be upon you O dwellers of the graves. May Allah forgive us and you, you are our forerunners and we are at your heels. Whoever visits the grave should face the deceased, greet them, and supplicate for them. Hadrat Ibn Abbas  reported: “Once the Prophet  passed by the graves in Madinah. He turned his face toward them and recited the above Du`aa [Tirmizi] 17

WHEN LAYING THE DECEASED TO REST IN THE GRAVE In the Name of Allah, and on the creed (way) of the Messenger of Allah. Hadrat Ibn `Umar  reported that when a body was placed in the grave, Prophet Muhammad  recited the above Du`aa. (Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Tirmizi, Ibn Majah, Nasai) Therefore, it is Sunnah for persons placing the body in the grave to recite the Du`aa. It is also Sunnah to place the body on its right side facing the Qiblah. 18

DU`AA WHEN FILLING THE GRAVE WITH SOIL FIRST handful: recite “From it (earth) did We create you SECOND handful: and to it shall We return you THIRD handful: and from it shall We bring you out once again.” [Surah Taa-Haa (20), Verse 55] It is desirable to encourage those attending the burial to throw 3 handfuls of soil over the grave from the head of the body. This is based on a hadith from Ibn Majah which says: “The Prophet  once offered a funeral prayer and then went to the deceased’s grave and threw 3 handfuls of soil from near the deceased’s head.” 19

DU`AA AFTER BURIAL FOR MALES O Allah! forgive him and have Mercy on him, and house him in Jannah. O Allah! forgive him and have Mercy on him, and enter him into Jannah. O Allah! forgive him and have Mercy on him, and grant him comfort in Jannah. Hadrat Uthman  reported that: after burying the deceased Prophet Muhammad  used to remain there and say: “Seek forgiveness for your brother and pray for him for firmness (in faith), because he will be question just now.” [Abu Dawud] 20

FOR FEMALES O Allah! forgive her and have Mercy on her, and house her in Jannah. O Allah! forgive her and have Mercy on her, and enter her into Jannah. O Allah! forgive her and have Mercy on her, and grant her comfort in Jannah. Hadrat Abu Huraira  reported that the Prophet Muhammad  said: “Whoever attends the funeral of a Muslim out of faith, seeking the reward from Allah and remains with it till the prayer is offered over it, and the burial is completed, will certainly return with reward of two qirats. Each qirat is equal to (mount) Uhud; and whoso offers his prayer over it and returns before its burial, he will certainly come back with one qirat.” [Bukhari] Qirat means – a very great weight like Uhud mountain. Recite Surah Yaaseen once upon the deceased. [Ahmad, Abu Dawood] It is recommended to recite what is easy for one, e.g. Surah Al-Faatihah, the first 5 verses and the last 3 verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, Aayatul Kursi, Surah At-Takaathur, and Surah Al-Ikhlaas upon the deceased. It has been mentioned in Daarul Qutni that – One who passes by the graveyard recites Surah Al-Ikhlaas 11 times and then sends the reward of it to those who are deceased, he (the reciter) will get the reward according to the number of deceased (in that graveyard). 21

NIYYAH FOR JUMU`AH SALAAH I pray four Raka`aat Sunnah of Jumu`ah I pray two Raka`aat Fard of Jumu`ah I pray four Raka`aat Sunnah of Jumu`ah 22

I pray two Raka`aat Sunnah of Jumu`ah I pray two Raka`aat Nafl of Jumu`ah Jumu`ah Salaah is Fard and takes the place of Zuhr Salaah on Fridays. In Surah Jumu`ah (62): Verse 9 Allah  says: “O you who believe (Muslims)! When the call is proclaimed for Salaah on Friday (Jumu`ah Salaah), come to the rememberance of Allah  and leave off business (and every other thing) . That is better for you if you did but know!” Hadrat Abu Ja’ad az Zumairi  reported that the Prophet  said: “Whosoever gives up 3 Friday Salaah by way of neglecting them, Allah  will seal up his heart.” [Abu Dawud, Tirmizi, Nasai] 23

NIYYAH FOR EID-UL-FITR I pray two Raka`aat Eid-ul-Fitr NIYYAH FOR EID-UL-ADHAA I pray two Raka`aat Eid-ul-Adhaa Jabir bin Abdullah  narrated that: On the day of Eid, the Prophet  used to return (after offering the Eid prayer) through a way different from that which he went. [Bukhari] Al Barra  narrated that he heard the Prophet  delivering a Khutbah saying, “The first thing to be done on this day (1st day of Eid-ul-Adhaa) is to pray; and after returning from the prayer, we slaughter our sacrifices (In the Name of Allah) and whoever does so, he acted according to our Sunnah.” [Bukhari] 24
