About the Irish Draught Horse In the early part of the 20th century, the Irish Photo Courtesy of Harold Campton Photography farmer needed a more versatile horse than the popular heavy draft. He needed an animal that could work the land throughout the week, go fox- hunting all day Saturday, jumping anything he faced, and then be ready to bring the family trap to church on Sunday morning. It was from this need that the Irish Draught was born. Over a century of selection has produced a warm- blooded breed that is a very sound, sensible animal with good bone, substance and quality. The Irish Draught is neither as massive nor as heavily Abbeyleix Maid of Diamonds (RID) mare by feathered as its name implies and has movement Flagmount Diamond (RID) x Amber Maid (RID) that is smooth and free, without exaggeration, and ridden by Wendy Alexandra Varisco in the 2014 not heavy nor ponderous. Standing over a lot of Southern Regional Horse Show ground, the Irish Draught has an exceptionally strong and sound constitution, great stamina and an uncanny jumping ability. In addition, this breed possesses a fabulous temperament made up of willingness, intelligence, docility and common sense. Not only is the Irish Draught a perfect companion mount for riders of all ages, but it possesses the ability and versatility to participate in various levels of jumping, eventing, dressage, hunting and driving events. It is all these exceptional qualities that make the Irish Draught an invaluable and irreplaceable element in the production of the highly successful Irish Draught Sport Horse. The Irish Draught Sport Horse A complete package in its purist form, the Irish Draught must also be acknowledged for its potent and unparalleled contribution in the creation of the magical cross; Photo Courtesy of Jess Walker the Irish Draught Sport Horse. The even temperament, durability and power of the Irish Draught, mixed with the speed and athleticism of the Thoroughbred, creates a potent mix which is well up to the demands of modern day competition. World famous for jumping and cross-country ability, this Irish Draught/Thoroughbred cross is not only a top caliber international athlete, but can serve as a perfect novice mount, adeptly boosting the confidence of a lower level rider. Although we have recently seen the introduction of crosses with Allison Springer riding Arthur (IDSH) other bloodlines such as top quality Warmbloods, Arabians and gelding by Brandenburg's Windstar (RIDSH) Quarter horses, which are showing great promise, it is still the x Kelly (TB) in the CIC3* at Rebecca Farms in 2011 RIDxTB cross that has achieved world wide status. Cruising, Cagney, Ado Annie, Eezy, Carling King and Hopes are High are some of the shining stars of the Grand Prix circuit, and Custom Made, Supreme Rock, Giltedge and Sailing have thrilled us in the eventing world. Photo Courtesy of John Chang This magical cross is referred to as the Irish Draught Sport Horse in North America and the Irish Sport Horse in Europe. While it may seem confusing, there is a reason for the difference in names. The Irish Draught Sport Horse is recognized by North America (IDHS-NA and IDHS-Can) as a crossbred animal with a portion of RID (Registered Irish Draught) blood. The Irish Sport Horse is Photo Courtesy of Christy Weflen recognized by the Irish Horse Board, as an animal of ANY breeding, which Wolfgang's Pride (RIDSH) gelding by MAY OR MAY NOT have HangOn Johnny (RID) x Red Roany (TB) Irish Draught blood in its ridden by Samantha Rademacher in Jr pedigree. rider Training level dressage in 2013 For example, an ArabxTB, TBxConnemara, Pure TB or RIDxTB may all be classified as an Irish Sport Horse. But in North America, only the cross with RID blood is classified as an Irish Draught Sport Horse. It should be understood that the IDSH is not a special breed, nor a Dooley (IDSH) by O'Leary's Irish product of an \"American\" breeding program. It is just a new Diamond (RID) x Sweet Kelly moniker aimed at educating the public about the Irish Draught blood that is so prevalent in many of the top performance animals. (Standardbred) by Super Bowl (SB) Whether the cross is known as an Irish Draught Sport Horse, an Irish Sport Horse or even as an Irish Hunter, if there is Irish Draught blood running in those veins, you have one great horse!

Foreign Stallions *These foreign stallions have frozen semen available through agents here in North America. The stallions have been inspected and approved through a harmonized studbook, but have not been entered into the IDHSNA books. Due to this, these stallions are listed as a courtesy to our members. Progeny from these stallions can be registered with full rights through the IDHSNA* Purebred Harmonization What It Means and What It Does Not Mean The original harmonization proposal signed by the IDHSNA refers to harmonization of rules, classifications and inspection procedures. It is not a merging of societies, nor of horses. The IDHSNA is not a satellite of Horse Sport Ireland (HSI). The IDHSNA is an independent society. The rules for purebred inspection and registration have been harmonized so that the horses bred in North America or their progeny are eligible for inspection and registration in Ireland and GB. It continues to be vitally important that eligible horses, including imported horses, be registered with the IDHSNA. It is not very expensive to register eligible horses with the IDHSNA. Owners of registered horses receive notifications about inspections and the horses are counted in the North American herd. Registration simplifies the process for those horses’ progeny to be registered, and it is a requirement to attend shows (such as the annual show) and to compete for year-end or USDF awards!! Throughout the years, the IDHSNA has received requests from some horse owners who assume the IDHSNA is a pass-through organization for HSI. But that is not what our harmonization agreement means. When North American owners elect to register their horses with Ireland/HSI only, the IDHSNA is not able to accommodate those horses' inspections. In order to be inspected at an IDHSNA inspection, a horse must be in our registry. Registrations, memberships, and inspections fund the existence of the IDHSNA and the important work in education and promotion we provide. Thank you for your annual membership, and for registering and inspecting your Irish Draught or Irish Draught Sport Horse. 35

Registered and Approved Irish Draught Sport Horse Stallions Nice horse! What breed is it? If you own an Irish Draught (ID) or Irish Draught Sport Horse (IDSH) you probably get that question all the time. And you can respond confidently about the breed and pedigree of your registered horse. That is one of the values of a horse registry and your participation in it. A breeder (in most cases) took the time to complete paperwork including detailed drawings and sometimes microchipping of your special horse. A DNA profile was done to ensure the parentage presented in the paperwork was either true or possible. And viola you know your horse. You could get another horse of the same breed, or even one related to yours. Or more than one more! Like other registries, including dog registries, IDHSNA performs this important role. But in addition, IDHSNA is actively involved in the conservation of a rare breed - the Irish Draught. While many major draft breeds have declining populations, in the case of the Irish Draught, one cause of declining numbers is the success of the part bred IDSH! The IDSH is such a popular breed for jumping disciplines that the foundation for that breed, the purebred ID, numbers declined until concerned breeders recognized what was happening and sought to remedy the issue. That work continues to this day. It is important to register your IDSH to support all the work of the IDHSNA including the conservation of the foundation Irish Draught. So we ask you to take special notice of the stallions in this book who are indicated with the IDHSNA member logo. The owner of the stallion is a current member of IDHSNA and their support of the Society as well as your support of them helps keep this important organization registering, inspecting and promoting Irish Draughts and Irish Draught Sport Horses all over North America! 40
