sample Paper 1 [Easy Concept] Time Allowed : 3 hrs.] [Max. Marks : 80 General Instructions: 1. This paper is divided into two parts: A and B. All questions are compulsory. 2. Separate instructions are given with each section and question, wherever necessary. Read these instructions very carefully and follow them. 3. Do not exceed the prescribed word limit while answering the questions. Part A — [40 Marks] Reading (20 Marks) 1. Read the passage given below. 1. The colour of animals is by no means a matter of chance; it depends on many considerations, but in the majority of cases tends to protect the animal from danger by rendering it less conspicuous. Perhaps it may be said that if colouring is mainly protective, there ought to be but few brightly coloured animals. There are, however, not a few cases in which vivid colours are themselves protective. The kingfisher itself, though so brightly coloured, is by no means easy to see. The blue harmonizes with the water, and the bird as it darts along the stream looks almost like a flash of sunlight. 2. Desert animals are generally the colour of the desert. Thus, for instance, the lion, the antelope, and the wild donkey are all sand-coloured. “Indeed,” says Canon Tristram, “in the desert, where neither trees, brushwood, nor even undulation of the surface afford the slightest protection to its foes, a modification of colour assimilated to that of the surrounding country is absolutely necessary. Hence, without exception, the upper plumage of every bird, and also the fur of all the smaller mammals and the skin of all the snakes and lizards, is of one uniform sand colour.” 3. The next point is the colour of the mature caterpillars, some of which are brown. This probably makes the caterpillar even more conspicuous among the green leaves than would otherwise be the case. Let us see, then, whether the habits of the insect will throw any light upon the riddle. What would you do if you were a big caterpillar? Why, like most other defenseless creatures, you would feed by night, and lie concealed by day. So do these caterpillars. When the morning light comes, they creep down the stem of the food plant, and lie concealed among the thick herbage and dry sticks and leaves, near the ground, and it is obvious that under such circumstances the brown colour really becomes a protection. It might indeed be argued that the caterpillars, having become brown, concealed themselves on the ground, and that we were reversing the state of things. But this is not so, because, while we may say as a general rule that large caterpillars feed by night and lie concealed by day, it is by no means always the case that they are brown; some of them still retaining the green colour. We may then conclude that the habit of concealing themselves by day came first, and that the brown colour is a later adaptation. On the basis of your understanding of the passage, answer any ten questions from the twelve that follow. (a) According to the passage, the colour of animals is ................................ . Social distancing practices are changes in behaviour that can help stop the spread of infections. These often include curtailing social contact, work and schooling among seemingly healthy individuals, with a view to delaying transmission and reducing the size of an outbreak. As an individual, you can lower your risk of infection by reducing your rate of contact with other people. Avoiding public spaces and unnecessary social gatherings, especially events with large numbers of people or crowds, will lower the chance that you will be exposed to the new Coronavirus as well as to other infectious diseases like flu. Various measures of social distancing are as under: (i) curtailing social contact (ii) avoiding public places (iii) unnecessary social gatherings (iv) organizing meetings via videos (v) Avoid public transport (vi) working from home Sample Papers 47
2. Other measures include working from home if possible, organizing meetings via video calls rather than doing them in person and avoiding unnecessary use of public transport, says Stuart Neil at King’s College London. 3. Social distancing “should be approached sensibly and rationally”, says Neil. If you do have to be out and about, the World Health Organization recommends maintaining a distance of at least 1 meter between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing. It is also recommended that you avoid physical contact with others in social situations, including handshakes, hugs and kisses. 4. It has already affected the global economy because people are staying at home and demand for goods and services has fallen. 5. Concerns have also been expressed that social distancing could lead to increased loneliness, especially among older people who are at a higher risk of severe Covid-19. 6. It is recommended to separate yourself from people you live with as much as possible. If you can’t avoid sharing a bathroom or toilet, clean these areas regularly. If you have covid-19 or suspect that you are at risk, the priority should be to avoid transmitting the disease to others, particularly if you are caring for someone vulnerable. Or Save Tigers Tigers face the danger of extinction as their population has drastically decreased from 40,000 to just 4000 or may be less than that. The cause of such a big decline is inexorable poaching and clearing of habitat for agriculture. The biggest threat to tigers in India is depletion of their chief prey like deer, wild pigs and wild cattle. As a result, although about 300,000 square kilometres of tiger habitat still remains, much of it is empty of tigers because there is not enough food for them to survive and breed successfully. According to Dr K. Ullas Karanth, if protected and given sufficient access to abundant prey, tiger population can quickly stabilise. With India’s large network of protected areas and continued funding from conservation groups like the Wildlife Conservation Society, the findings provide hope that tigers can survive extinction in the wild. So there is hope for our tigers. 10. (A) (a) Grief over the death of a loved one is the main theme of this sermon. There is no use of lamentation over death.
