04 Editorial Note Greetings from the 24th Executive Council of the Institute of the NL Architects Bangladesh (IAB). TEAM A very warm welcome to the second IAB QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER of 2021. The current issue covers news of the key events and activities of IAB from the month of April to June 2021. Giving emphasis on the Covid-19 pandemic, the 24th Executive Council together with different committees, playing a proactive role in multiple sectors. IAB COVID-19 Awareness and Support Committee’s efforts towards its members is one of the noblest efforts by the institute. IAB’s proactive effort for saving the historic Ruplal House at Old Dhaka and taking serious preparation on RAJUK Workshop on DAP, celebrating ‘Pohela Ashar’, the birth anniversary of eminent Architect Bashirul Haq are some of the key activities covered this time. The issue also portrays the Bangladeshi Architects’ achievements in international areas. On behalf of the Editorial Board, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the EC members, contributors, and the whole Newsletter Team for their relentless supports and contributions. Message 05 from the President Fellow Architects, Greetings from the 24th Executive Council. We are continuing our life in the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic, this unprecedented global phenomenon causing us physiological, professional and financial hardship relentlessly. Institute of Architects Bangladesh always puts the welfare of the members as a priority. During this troubled time, the institute tried to uphold this motto nonetheless. We took up some initiative to ease the emergency medical & fiscal needs of the members and continued & updated some running schemes. We urge to all our fellow architects and countrymen to stay together morally and maintain the necessary precautions properly to bring down the curve of contamination and death toll. 06 Achievement Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize IAB Fellow Architect Marina Tabassum Awarded the Prestigious Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize American Academy of Arts and Letters. IAB Fellow Ar. Marina Tabassum had been awarded the prestigious Arnold Ar. Marina Tabassum W. Brunner Memorial Prize by the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Photographs by Asif Salman The American Academy of Arts and Letters’ annual architecture awards program began in 1955 with the inauguration of the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize and has since expanded to include four Arts and Letters Awards. This year’s winners were chosen from a group of 32 individuals and practices nominated by the members of the Academy. The jurors were Annabelle Selldorf (Chair), Kenneth Frampton, Steven Holl, Thom Mayne, Richard Meier, Toshiko Mori, Robert A. M. Stern, Billie Tsien, and Tod Williams. 07 Bangladeshi Project Bamboo Playscape awarded 'Medal of Excellence' in the 2020/2021 UIA Friendly & Inclusive Spaces Awards The project from Bangladesh titled IAB Quarterly Newsletter: Apl-Jun 2021 Bamboo Playscape, an inclusive playspace as part of a “Cycle of care” project by Ar. Kazi Meftahul Arefin (A-245) and the team had been awarded 'Medal of Excellence' in the 2020/2021 UIA Friendly & Inclusive Spaces Awards under the category 'Public and Open Spaces' on 29 April 2021. The 3rd edition of the UIA Friendly and Inclusive Spaces Awards attracted 91 entries from 35 countries across the world. Despite widely varying economic, political, social and cultural contexts the submissions demonstrated how sensitive architectural design and collaborative processes can create inclusive, friendly and enabling environments. Five juries, one from each UIA region, together with a past award winner, assessed the entries which were submitted in four categories – New Buildings, Refurbished Existing including Historic Buildings, Public and Open Spaces and Research. 15 Observations/Suggestions/Objections on DAP (2016-2035) IAB’s preparation for RAJUK Workshop On 26 May 2021, a discussion session was organized by IAB to attend the forthcoming workshop by Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) on the proposed Detailed Area Plan (DAP: 2016-2035). Four teams from the IAB-Working Group presented their 'Observations/ Suggestions/ Objections' on the proposed DAP to the IAB members and solicited suggestions that might be included at the workshop.
