Finding freedom in Following Christ Sr. Allison Lee Zink leaves the altar at Mount Sacred Heart Chapel holding Canceled flights, a Nor’easter and becoming stranded her newly received veil and crucifix. in an unfamiliar city—these were all circumstances that could have easily deterred Sr. Allison Lee Zink, ASCJ, from pursuing her call to religious life. But through God’s Providence, she professed First Vows as an Apostle of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on July 30, 2022. A St. Louis native, Sr. Allison was born and raised in the faith and considers herself a “cradle Catholic.” Despite her strong Catholic upbringing, she had never considered religious life as a vocation. That changed during her freshman year at Rockhurst University after she met a Sister at a Catholic youth conference. “A priest that I knew was talking to this Sister. He invited me over, introduced me and left us to talk,” Sr. Allison said. “We had a really good conversation, and it made me realize that I had never thought about religious life before.” Following the encounter, Sr. Allison knew she had to bring the question of religious life into prayer. But it wasn’t a question that she was ready to have answered, so she decided to focus on her education instead. She continued to pursue her degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders and planned to become a speech pathologist. But the thought of religious life kept coming back. It wasn’t until her senior year that she seriously began to discern where God was calling her. She found a spiritual director who was instrumental in guiding her through the discernment process. “Once my spiritual director got to know me, we talked about different religious orders that might fit me,” she recalled. “He knew the Apostles really well and put me in touch with Sr. Angela [Gertsema].” Sr. Allison participated in a variety of opportunities with the Apostles, including virtual prayer groups and discernment events. She was eventually invited to participate in a live-in experience at the Provincialate in Connecticut. Thinking she would not be able to attend due to her class schedule, Sr. Allison was ready to say “No.” She was also actively discerning with another Congregation that she was leaning toward and wanted to do a live-in experience

The next chapter in Sr. Allison’s journey takes her to Clelian Heights School in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, an Apostle- owned mission serving children and adults with special needs. As a junior professed Sister, she will renew her vows annually until the time she makes her Perpetual Profession. “I feel honored to be called as a bride of Christ,” she said with a smile. “While I’m giving up the ‘freedom’ of the material world, I’ve gained a greater freedom—to know the will of God and do God’s will. I’m not dependent on myself anymore; I’m dependent on God and that’s very freeing.” 5

To Give Ourselves in Love A reflection on Sacred Heart Spirituality in the Modern World (Part 2) Our devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus becomes truly authentic when our actions and choices mirror those of Jesus in the Gospels. As followers of Christ, we are called to build a civilization of love, and the Catholic Church has a rich tradition of social teachings that clearly articulate principles by which disciples of Jesus in the modern world are called to live. We invite you to reflect on some of the principles of Catholic Social Teaching and how God might be calling you to integrate these into your daily choices. Human life is sacred and the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society. Because we believe that each person is created in the image and likeness of God and therefore every person is precious, we must treat each of our brothers and sisters with dignity and respect. Today, the value of the human person—in particular the poor, the immigrant, the unborn, the elderly and the imprisoned—is threatened. The Church reminds us that exploitation of the powerless is contrary to Jesus’ teachings. As those dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we are called to tenderly care for and lovingly serve those who are most vulnerable. ♥ Reflection: Who is that vulnerable person in need of my kindness today? Photo by Sr. Benjamin Merlotti, ASCJ All are called to family, community and participation. Sr. Charlene Celli, Principal of Clelian Heights The human person is not only sacred but also social. How we organize School in Greensburg, PA, reads with a student. and govern our societies must be just and for the common good. It is often said that the measure of a just civilization is how it treats its most vulnerable. Jesus certainly challenged us when He taught, “Whatever you did for the least of these brothers and sisters, you did for me” (Mt 25:40). ♥ Reflection: How do I treat the weak or those most in need? Human dignity can be protected and a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected and responsibilities are met. Every person has the right to life and to all that is necessary to live a dignified life, including food, water, health care and education. Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilities—to one another and to our common home. In his encyclical Laudato Sí, Pope Francis reminds us of this responsibility when he writes: “The urgent challenge to protect our common home includes a concern to bring the whole human family together to seek a sustainable and integral development, for we know that things can change. …Humanity still has the ability to work together in building our common home” (13). Both our individual and collective choices do matter, as Jesus reminds us of that simple underlying principle: we are to “love our neighbor as ourselves” (Mk 12:31).

To that end we must open our hearts through prayer and We are called to live in solidarity as one ask for the grace to become more like Jesus every day. And human family. so we pray: Regardless of national, racial, ethnic, economic and Jesus, meek and humble of heart, ideological differences, we are our brothers’ and sisters’ make our hearts like yours! keepers. Jesus calls us to be peacemakers; love for our neighbor demands that we promote peace in a world plagued by violence and conflict. At the heart of the virtue of solidarity is the pursuit of justice. Pope Paul VI taught that “If you want peace, work for justice” (World Day of Peace, 1972). ♥ Reflection: How am I a peacemaker in my corner of the world? As followers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, our love for others must be thoughtful, global and inclusive. Loving our neighbor reminds us that being a follower of Jesus is ultimately not about us; the more we allow God’s healing 9

Adrianne DiLonardo died peacefully on April 27, 2022 at Sacred Heart Manor. She was 88 years old and professed as an Apostle of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for 68 years. A native of Pittsburgh, Sr. Adrianne entered the Congregation as an aspirant in 1950. She professed First Vows on August 24, 1953 and Perpetual Vows on August 25, 1958. Throughout her nearly 70 years as an Apostle, Sr. Adrianne made a lasting impact in the lives of students across the country as well as her Sister Apostles. She began her ministry in elementary education as a teacher at St. Raphael Academy in Bridgeport, CT, and then St. Joseph School in New York. She went on to minister as a school administrator in Illinois, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. From 1974 until 1983, Sr. Adrianne helped shape young Apostles in formation in her roles as Postulant Directress and Novice Directress. She served as Provincial Superior of the United States Province from 1986-1995. Afterward, she was appointed Executive Director of Clelian Heights School for Exceptional Children, Greensburg, PA, where she lovingly ministered until her retirement in 2016. 15
