Below: Sr. Christine Marie Rattini signs her perpetual vow formula; she is greeted by the Most Reverend Juan Miguel Betancourt. On the morning of July 27, 2019—only 16 hours after Sr. Catherine 5 made her first vows—Sr. Christine professed perpetual vows as an Apostle of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at a Mass celebrated by the Most Reverend Juan Miguel Betancourt, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Hartford. She had waited and prepared for this day since entering the Congregation in August 2010, and it was made all the more memorable as it coincided with her birthday. “My heart was overflowing with joy,” said Sr. Christine, 37. “What an incredible gift to profess my vows perpetually to the Sacred Heart on my birthday, of all days. That’s God’s full gift!” The youngest of seven children, Sr. Christine grew up in Troy, MO. Her devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, she said, was planted in her heart at an early age; every parish to which she belonged over the years was called Sacred Heart Parish. “I couldn’t escape the Sacred Heart,” she laughed. “So when I met the Apostles, their devotion to the Sacred Heart and His merciful love resonated with me. I knew this was where I was called.”
Becoming People often wonder about the process of becoming an Apostle. As we focus on the gift of consecrated life, we would like to share an an Apostle overview of our formation process. These stages of formation are designed to allow each candidate to listen and discern God’s call as she learns about the charism, spirituality and ministries of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Pre-Postulate: Women seeking to discern if they are called to be an Apostle work with our vocation director and get acquainted 1 with our Sisters. Those desiring to spend an extended period of time in mutual discernment with the Congregation may do so during a pre-postulate program at our Provincialate. The aim is to help each candidate grow in self-knowledge and discern whether she has the prerequisites to begin a formative journey with the Apostles. 2 Postulate: The two-year postulate is the first official stage of formation and a time of human and spiritual growth. During the postulate the candidate continues to discern and verify the authenticity of her call to live the charism of the Apostles, to deepen her relationship with Christ and to participate in the ministry of the Congregation. 3 Novitiate: At this stage, the candidate becomes a member of the Congregation. The novitiate consists of two years: a canonical year dedicated to the study of the vows, theology, and the history and spirituality of the Apostles; and an apostolic year in which the novice participates more fully in the community life and ministry of the Congregation. This stage is dedicated to helping the novice internalize the evangelical counsels of chastity, poverty and obedience as she grows in the charism of Blessed Clelia. 4 Juniorate: Upon professing first vows, the candidate enters the juniorate. This is the final stage of initial formation and a period of temporary vows, which are renewed annually for five to nine years until the Sister is ready to profess perpetual vows. During the juniorate, the Sister continues her spiritual formation, professional preparation and apostolic experiences. She spends two years in an international juniorate community at our Generalate in Rome and the other years ministering within a local apostolic community in the United States. The juniorate is a time of preparation for the total gift of self to God in the profession of perpetual vows as an Apostle. A Lifelong Journey Although the defined formation process ends upon professing perpetual vows, each Apostle of the Sacred Heart of Jesus continues on the formative journey every day of her life. This lifelong journey requires the Sister to assume an attitude of constant discernment as her relationship with Jesus deepens. To that end, the Congregation regularly provides formative programs for the Apostles and encourages each Sister to participate in spiritual and theological offerings at the local Church level.

We have grown to love the Apostles and their ministries. That is why we have included them in our estate plans.” - Mark and Rosanna Ruiz Sacramento, CA
Building For Success Sacred Heart Academy (SHA) and Cor Jesu Academy (CJA), our Apostle high schools, enjoy a rich tradition of educating young women in the Catholic tradition. Steeped in the charism of Blessed Clelia Merloni, both schools are committed to providing young women with an innovative education that challenges and inspires them. At the heart of this dedication is a continuous investment in academic programming, staff, facilities, equipment and more. In addition to enhancing their programming, both schools recently completed expansion projects that will enrich the educational experience of our students and support their continued success. The Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus thank the SHA and CJA alumnae, benefactors and friends who make these dreams become a reality.
