Institute of Salutogenesis & Complementary Medicine In view of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth's innovative focus, SBV AIM-HIGH (SBV Academy of Integrative Medicine for promotion of Holistic Intervention towards General Health) was started right from the inception with Yoga and Music therapy offered in hospital services at MGMC&RI. This was then taken forward for more than 12 years through designated centers for Yoga therapy and Music therapy in the form of CYTER (Center for Yoga Therapy Education & Research) and CMTER (Center for Music Therapy Education & Research). They were entrusted with the task of facilitating transformation of focus from pathogenesis to salutogenesis through various activities in realms of patient care, health professionals education and cutting edge research. Adequate infrastructure facilities were provided and eminent faculty members recruited to fulfill the vision and mission of SBV. In 2022 these two centers were upgraded into an Institute of Salutogenesis and Complementary Medicine having Schools of Yoga Therapy and Music Therapy. ISCM was inaugurated on 22 August 2022 by Dr. Bhushan Patwardhan, Chairman NAAC EC & Former Vice Chairman UGC in the presence of Prof. Subhash Chandra Parija, Vice Chancellor, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth. 4

Messages of Blessings from the Management and Administrators of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth Pondicherry 5

Shri M.K. Rajagopalan Hon’ble Chancellor Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Pondicherry From the desk of the Chancellor Salutogenesis which refers to the holistic wellness effected by Complementary Medicine and includes modern medicine and other therapeutic modalities combined towards fostering an effective treatment. The Centre for Yoga Therapy Education and Research and Center for Music Therapy Education and Research have been an integral part of Complementary Medicine at Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth ever since its inception. The Centre for Music Therapy Education and Research and Centre for Yoga Therapy Education and Research have played a pivotal role in the concept of wellness at SBV. During the recent visit by NAAC PEER Team, the working of the centers was eulogized that further propelled the activities. I am indeed happy to note that these two centres are now being upgraded into Schools of Music Therapy and Yoga Therapy which would constitute the emergence of Institute of Salutogenesis and Complementary Medicine (ISCM). ISCM will be one of its kind in a health sciences higher education institution. I wish the very best for the Institute of Salutogenesis and Complementary Medicine in all its future endeavours. 6

Prof. S.C. Parija, M.D., Ph.D., D.Sc., FRCPath., FRSB Hon’ble Vice- Chancellor Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Pondicherry From the desk of the Vice Chancellor It gives me great pleasure to note that the existing Centre for Yoga therapy Education & Research (CYTER) and Centre for Music Therapy Education and Research (CMTER) at SBV have been upgraded into distinct schools and henceforth would come under the jurisdiction of an exclusive state-of-the-art Institute of Salutogenesis and Complementary Medicine (ISCM). My hearty congratulations at the outset! Salutogenesis or the component of wellness is considered significant in the present world that is plagued by stress. Yoga and music are considered as cardinal tools of wellness. However, these tools of wellness acquire relevance in the context of complementary medicine only if they generate evidence-based data. It is gratifying to note that at SBV yoga and music have been seamlessly integrated into the folds of modern medicine and have earned global recognition for fostering evidence based original research, in addition to contributing significantly to patient care and outreach. I do envisage a bright future for ISCM. Let ISCM patronize evidence-based complementary medicine for the larger benefit of the global community. I once again offer my hearty greetings and congratulations. 7

Prof. A.R. Srinivasan, M.Sc., (Med. Bioche.), Ph.D., FIMSA Registrar, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Pondicherry Message from the Registrar With great pride and gratification, I note that the Institute of Salutogenesis and Complementary Medicine (ISCM) is having its grand genesis on the 22nd of August, 2022: a red-letter day for sure in the annals of SBV. On a personal note, at SBV, I have been steadily watching the progress made in the domains of yoga therapy and music therapy, ever since its inception. Now, yoga therapy and music therapy at SBV have metamorphosed into full-fledged schools coming under the immediate purview of ISCM. Plenty of meaningful endeavors are in the offing that would put ISCM, in particular and SBV, in general on the global map as a leader in practising integrative medicine by effectively and holistically combining the time-tested complementary medicine with the facet of modern medicine. Let ISCM give a creditable account of itself in the years to come. May the goodness of yoga and music, as tools of wellness continue to confer benefit on the community. May I offer my hearty congratulations to Prof. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani, Director ISCM and his able colleagues as they embark on a long and purposeful journey. 8

Dr K.R. Sethuraman, MD, PGDHE. Senior Professor and Dean of Medicine AIMST University, 08100, Malaysia (Former VC and Currently, the Endowed Chair in Health Professions Education, SBV) THE MAINSTREAMING OF COMPLEMENTARY SYSTEMS AT SBV After I had joined SBV on 5th April 2013 as its Vice Chancellor, I went on a guided tour of the vast campus and its various facilities. I found Yoga Therapy and Music Therapy units situated in small cubicles within the Blood-Bank and dialysis facilities of the Hospital complex. As done in most healthcare institutions, the mainstream healthcare disciplines had largely ignored them or were unaware of their presence. Being a young deemed-to-be University (less than 4 years old then) with a mandate to promote innovation in health sciences, I felt that it was vital for the survival of SBV that these two complementary healthcare facilities soon get into the mainstream of Medicine and make their mark on the Indian and Global scene. These nascent units of complementary medicine were nurtured by Prof. Ananthakrishnan and we worked in harmony to try and achieve the tough task of mainstreaming them in a tertiary care institution. We could clearly perceive at SBV in 2013 that the complementary-alternative systems (CAM) had to prove themselves to the mainstream evidence-based Medicine that they too had something unique to offer to patients that was not available in the mainstream practices. While we were mulling over these challenges, I had a moment of epiphany that EBM catered mainly to combating pathology and sickness, while CAM promoted wellness and used the innate healing forces in the mind and body, also known as Salutogenesis. Though I have had a vague idea of Salutogenesis since 2010, which I had gathered while I was dean in Malaysia, it was at SBV in 2014 that the concept could be fully operationalised by giving a new direction to complementary systems to make them acceptable to mainstream Medicine. Thus, the concept of Salutogenesis gave raison d'etre to Yoga and Music therapy units and proved to be a game changer for them at SBV. The CAM therapists took on patients from Medicine, Obstetrics, Cancer wards, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Cardiology, Cath-lab, labour-room, OT etc, to promote wellness and facilitate healing. 9

Soon after, the CAM units were upgraded as Centres of Excellence (CYTER and CMTER) and they quickly launched PG courses and doctoral level research. This got SBV quite some credit for innovations from the Devaraj Committee in 2014 and from the NAAC panel that visited SVC in 2015 and upgraded it to an A-level. I remember conveying my conviction to the Hon’ble chairman and the present Chancellor that CYTER and CMTER would get international attention even before other departments and centres of SBV could do so. That was shown to be true by both CYTER and CMTER. The VC and Head of Music therapy IMC University of Applied Sciences in Krems, Austria visited SBV; later, they invited a panel of four members from SBV, to visit them in Austria to sign the MOU to permit their scholars to pursue doctoral research at SBV. CYTER for its part, has had several international students and has forged national and international alliances and research initiatives. I am impressed with the continued growth of CYTER and CMTER in public service, in academics and in research. By adopting the path of salutogenic approach to complement the pathogenic approach of curative tertiary care medicine, they have forged a robust alliance with the mainstream healthcare at SBV. Visiting scholars of music therapy and yoga therapy have been amazed at this unique achievement of SBV and its constituent facilities. For all the reasons stated above, I am delighted to note that the two centres of excellence, viz., CYTER and CMTER, which have been under the SBV-AIMHIGH initiative till now, are forging ahead as an Institute of Salutogenesis and Complementary Medicine. May further success be bestowed upon this new development. 10

Message of Blessings from the Honourable Chief Guest Prof. BHUSHAN PATWARDHAN PhD, FNASc, FAMS Chairman, NAAC EC & Former Vice Chairman UGC 11

Prof. Bhushan Patwardhan, PhD, FNASc, FAMS Chairman, NAAC EC & Former Vice Chairman UGC Distinguished Professor, Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences, Savitribai Phule Pune University Pune As per the World Health Organization around 80% of the world’s population is estimated to use Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) in some form or other, and over 40% of pharmaceutical formulations are based on natural products and traditional medicine. TCIM sector is also part of the growing trillion-dollar global health, wellness, beauty, and pharmaceutical industries. The advances in science and technology including molecular biology, genomics, stem cells, robotics, computation, imaging, and high-tech new therapies continue to revolutionize healthcare. However, several challenges still remain unresolved including its affordability and accessibility. At the frontiers of new thinking, the dimensions of prevention, promotion, and wellness are considered even more important than curative medicine and therapies. Emerging global trends indicate that the new models of healthcare will be more interdisciplinary, integrative, and inclusive. Typical silos between modern and traditional; conventional and complementary; generalized and personalized medicine will converge making the systems synergize and integrate. We need a paradigm shift from patient-disease-drug-treatment based curative approach to person- health-wellness-prevention based holistic approach for dealing especially with noncommunicable, behavioral, lifestyle, and metabolic diseases such as diabetes, asthma, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and many others. Immunity and Inflammation have come on the center stage during the Covid-19 pandemic. As of now, other than symptomatic treatment and vaccines there is nothing much for its prevention and management. Admittedly, current conventional medicine and therapeutic approaches are grossly inadequate to address present problems. Typically, Nutrition, Lifestyle, Environment, and Nutrition health are core determinants of Health and Medical care is needed to treat ill-health. However, many times, unknowingly, Health, Health Care, Medicine, and Medical Care terms are used interchangeably. Doctors and Medicine may be required to treat diseases but health has to be acquired by individuals. Health is too precious to be outsourced to doctors 12

and medicine. Our health is actually in our hands. The natural coping ability of our body and the tremendous power of the mind to heal ourselves cannot be ignored. The medicalization of our society has roots in the colonial mindset which is actually against our own traditional and cultural ethos. The basic principle of Ayurveda is “Swasthasya Swasthya Rakshanam”. The term ‘Swasthya’ has a deeper meaning involving physical, mental, social, and spiritual dimensions which cannot be equated merely to ‘Health’. I find ‘Salutogenesis’ is much closer to the concept of ‘Swasthya’. It is important to be open-minded toward newer approaches like Salutogenesis and Complementary Medicine. We must remember that scientific evidence is just one of the many forms of evidence such as anecdotal evidence, intuition, personal experience, and testimonial cases. We need to be a little humbler while raising questions regarding its evidence-base and remember that “absence of evidence is not evidence of absence”. I am pleased to note the extraordinary services from the Center for Yoga Therapy Education and Research and Center for Music Therapy over the past decade. Integration of such drugless therapies with cutting-edge medical advances augurs well with our cultural traditions. I commend Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth for upgrading these centers into the Institute of Salutogenesis and Complementary Medicine (ISCM). I congratulate the Chancellor Shri MK Rajagopalan and the Vice Chancellor Prof. SC Parija on taking efforts to showcase the cultural heritage of India through the medical perspective. This will truly be the historic establishment of a unique and holistic institute within a modern medical institution. I also congratulate Prof. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani who has been chosen to lead this initiative of integrative medicine where the antiquity of tradition and modernity of science will come together for the sake of humanity. Pondicherry is well-known as a city of the Great Siddha Yogis and I am honored to be present in such a spiritual ambiance as I inaugurate the ISCM of SBV on the 22nd of August 2022. May ISCM be blessed to be a torch bearer for the welfare of humanity. 13

Shri Subodh Tiwari CEO, Kaivalyadham S.M.Y.M. Samiti, Lonavala Secretary General, Indian Yoga Association MESSAGE The Sanskrit word for health is svāstha. Sva means ‘self’ and stha means ‘to reside’. Therefore, svāstha connotes the state of abiding in one’s own self, to be in one’s pristine nature, svarupe’ vasthānam. The ancient Indian wisdom upholds that the Self is the essence of being and becoming, and all afflictions and sufferings cease as soon as the knowledge of the Self dawns. This Self is of the nature of Truth infinite, Knowledge infinite, and bliss infinite, Satyam, Jñānam, Anantam. This self is to be known in all its entirety. But the haloed face of the truth is masked by a golden lid, which is a veil interposed between our vision and Reality. The seer of the Upaniṣads offers his supplication: hiraṇmayena pātreṇa satyasyāpihitaṁ mukham | tat tvaṁ pūṣannapāvṛṇu satyadharmāya dṛṣṭaye || As soon as the veil of ignorance lifts, the essence of the Truth shines at the core of our hearts. Yoga is the royal science that leads to the blissful experience of the Self through the transcendence of ignorance. But the major challenge is to transcend the fivefold layers of relative existence, the pañcakośa. These layers are the annamaya kośa, prāṇamayakośa, manomayakośa, vijñānamayakośa and ānandamayakośa. Each of these layers telescopes into, overlaps with, and fulfills the other in sequence. To rise above all the layers, and experience the fusion with the highest bliss is the coveted goal of human life. The tradition of Yoga has been handed over to us from our ancestors starting from the Hirṇāyagarbha. This profound science needs to be fostered in its purest form for the well-being of humanity at large. Kaivalyadhama has been tirelessly endeavouring to cultivate the system of yoga with appropriate measures to maintain its sanctity and safeguard it from all sorts of dilution and distortion. The illustrious founder of Kaivalyadhama, Swami Kuvalayananda, has been always emphatic on the preservation of the purity of Yoga. He asserted: ‘Yoga should not be diluted.’ To guard against the dilution and expand its frontiers to the extent of scientific innovation, pari passu, is a herculean task to accomplish. We are extremely delighted to observe that Sri Balaji Vidyapith, with all its associate units, has taken gigantic strides to scientifically experiment with Yogic knowledge in order to nurture and nourish the concept of holistic health, which has been envisaged by our visionary founder. The upgradation of CYTER and CMTER of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth in the form of the Institute of Salutogenesis and Complementary Medicine is indeed a piece of great news that will open the floodgates of novel discoveries and innovations in the field of Yoga. On behalf of the pioneering institute of scientific research in the world, I convey my good wishes to the masterminds who have conceived such a wonderful concept. May the blessings of the supreme being shower on the nascent institution. 19

Prof. B.R. Sharma Vice-Chancellor, Sri Sri University, Odisha. Message of Blessings I am delighted to extend my heartiest congratulations to the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor of the Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth and their entire team for inaugurating the Institute of Salutogenesis and Complementary Medicine at Pondicherry. Health is touted to be the dynamic expression of life. Being healthy at physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels underscore the need of a holistic system of healthcare. I deeply acknowledge Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani’s strong commitment of bringing forth the best of traditional systems of healthcare for holistic wellbeing. He is a stalwart in Yoga Therapy and I am sure that he and his team led by Dr Meena Ramanathan will create new benchmarks in the field of health care. Best wishes for ISCM and the entire Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth family. 20

Yogacharya S Sridharan Senior Mentor, Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, Chennai Vice President, Indian Yoga Association Message of Blessings Institute of Salutogenesis and Complementary Medicine (ISCM) being inaugurated by the Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Pondicherry, is a first of its kind institute to take forward the excellent work done by the Centre for Yoga Therapy Education and Research (CYTER) and Centre for Music Therapy Education and Research (CMTER). Being associated with CYTER over the past many years, I have been witnessing and participating in the laudable work done by the Centre under the able leadership of Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani. ISCM marks a milestone in the growth of CYTER and will be a torch bearer in laying standards for the future in this area of excellent opportunity to serve the society through Yoga and Music. Yoga and Music as therapy tools are natural and empowers the practitioners to be independent in handling their health. I am confident ISCM will be doing excellent work and I wish the Director, the Management, staff, and teachers all the best. 21

This institute will have Schools of Yoga Therapy and Music Therapy under its ambit. This transformation in the form of Institute and School related to Yoga and other systems of medicine will definitely be of great utility and importance to the society in modern era under your able guidance and direction as Director of ISCM. During my past visit to Pondicherry, I have myself found that Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth is one of the India's top health sciences universities striving for the promotion of \"wellness\" and \"wellbeing\" for all. Adequate infrastructure facilities are provided and eminent faculty members are recruited to fulfill the vision and mission of SBV. New Programmes/Courses with new technology and collaborations in integrative medicine will certainly prove and give new directions to achieve the aim/objectives of the newly Institute of SBV for the cause of humanity at not only National but International level. I congratulate & send my best wishes on the occasion of transformation in the form of new academy of Integrative Medicine for the promotion of Holistic Intervention towards General Health at large. With sincere regards Prof. Ganesh Shankar Giri To, Yogacharya Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani MBBS, PGDFH, PGDY, ADY, FIAY, C-IAYT, MD (AM), DSc (Yoga) Director and Professor Yoga Therapy Institute of Salutogenesis and Complementary Medicine (ISCM) Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Pillayarkuppam, Pondicherry. 22

Prof. Dr. Madanmohan, MBBS, MD (Physiology), DSc (Yoga), FIAY Founder Director of CYTER of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth. Emeritus Professor of Physiology and Director, Center of Yogic Sciences, AVMC, Pondicherry. Message of Blessings It gives me immense pleasure to see the progress of the Yoga Therapy endevours of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth and I feel proud to be associated with its academic activities. Rapid progress from OPD level to academic and research center (CYTER) and now to institute level (ISCM) is remarkable indeed. Vision of the Chancellor Shri MK Rajagopalan, guidance of VC Prof. SC Parija, Dean of Faculty Prof. N Ananthakrishnan and former VC Prof. KR Sethuraman and logistic support from the administration has made possible the establishment of this unique and holistic institute. I congratulate you all for this noble achievement. Heart and soul of ISCM, Prof. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanai has worked with me for more than two decades. His knowledge, efficiency and dedication remind me of his illustrious parents - Swami Gitanada Giri and Ammaji Meenakshi Devi Bhavanani. His equally dedicated team of Dr Meena Ramanathan, G Dayanidy, Dhanushapnadeesh, Sarulatha and Raghav have made silent but significant contributions, the result of which is achievement of today’s dream. Modern medicine has made remarkable progress in the last few decades. New discoveries and treatment modules are an ongoing process. However, chronic, non- communicable, stress-induced disorders pose a challenge to modern medicine. Sneaking monkeypox while the world is still grappling with Covid-19 pandemic has added to our ubiquitous daily stress and health burden. The key to deal with the problem is managing stress and improving immunity, both these being related. Yoga, the world’s first and the best lifestyle ever designed, is ideal for prevention as well as management of stress. Coming together of modern medicine and yoga is a powerful combination. Addition of music is an add-on advantage. AUM chanting is an important part of yogic repertoire. Prof. Ananda is expert in all these three disciplines and his leadership of the ISCM augurs well for its future. To the best of my knowledge, ISCM is the first of its kind in India and maybe, the entire world too. I hope and pray that ISCM shines like a gem on the golden crown of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, a reputed medical university. May it become like a pole star and trigger establishment of similar institutes throughout the world – tatha’stu, AUM. 23

Prof. Vd. Arpan Bhatt Hon. Advisor, CYTER, SBV Dean, Planning and Development, Professor and Head, Department of Swasthavritta & Yoga, Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda, (Institute of National Importance) Ministry of Ayush, Govt. of India Jamnagar – 361008 Date: 13.08.2022 Dear Dr. Ananda, Namaskar ! It is always heartening to know about the progress and milestone achievements of the institution one is attached to in one way or the other. It gives me immense pleasure to acknowledge that the CYTER and CMTER are being upgraded to bear a status of an Institute of Salutogenesis and Complementary Medicine, to serve the seekers through the Schools of Yoga Therapy and Music Therapy. The present situation in health care sector has put all the medical sciences, world over, under a strict scanner and the reports say that despite of available cutting age medical facilities, it is still better not to fall ill than to search for a cure and Salutogenesis plays a very vital role there in. This pandemic period also visualized a shift in medical practice and the minds of people inclining them towards an integrated approach of health care. The role and importance of Complementary Medicine has gained an overwhelming recognition during this challenging time. A scrutiny of the inherited health care traditions and practices from all the cultures and civilizations, especially Bharatiya, suggests an emphasis over the aspects of wellness and holism since the time immemorial. The sciences like Ayurveda, Yoga, Siddha, Samgeeta etc. have very good potential to enhance the health and well- being of the ailing and the society, if used judiciously. These sciences, having the same roots, are complementary to each other. Further, there are ample scopes for meaningful scientific research in this sector. Any activity cannot commence and continue to flourish if there is lack of vision, dedication, determination, and perseverance. I very cordially congratulate and thank the visionary leadership of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth for initiating and supporting such activities as well as taking a very wise and timely decision of upgradation. The painstaking efforts of very able and enthusiastic teams of CYTER and CMTER under the guidance of very dynamic and creative directors are noteworthy. I very heartily wish a grand success to the event and best of luck for the future endeavours. With warmest regards, (Arpan Bhatt) Dean, Planning and Development, Professor and Head, Department of Swasthavritta & Yoga, ITRA 24

Prof. Sumathy Sundar, Ph.D., FIMC (Austria) Formerly the Director, CMTER Director (Academics) Chennai School of Music Therapy Pvt. Ltd. Message It is indeed a very special moment to know that Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth (SBV) under the visionary leadership of Hon. Chancellor Shri MK Rajagopalan, Vice Chancellor Prof. SC Parija and Prof. N. Ananthakrishnan, Dean of Faculty, SBV has integrated music and yoga and founded the Institute of Salutogenesis and Complementary Medicine (ISCM). It is a great pride for the management, faculty, staff and students of SBV and all the other people in the administration associated with this endeavour of the formation of ISCM. The seeds of this noble, prestigious and unique endeavour were sown a decade before. As far as I know, it is twelve years since music and yoga have been introduced as complementary therapeutic modalities as a part of regular medical care to treat patients with the Salutogenic approach putting health and wellness in the forefront and not just treating the disease. Until today, the university has been continuing to be the forerunners in adopting this innovative leadership theme in patient care and has been demonstrating a great efficiency in sustaining these health promoting mechanisms not only in its hospital, but also in the neighbouring community and among its faculty, staff and students It was the most enlightening experience for me to have been associated with the erstwhile Center for Music Therapy Education and Research since its inception in the year 2014 under the leadership of Prof. KR. Sethuraman, the then Vice Chancellor and Prof. N. Ananthakrishnan, without whose knowledge, wisdom, guidance and commitment CMTER would not have reached the current state as it is now. CMTER runs a plethora of courses eventually leading to a Ph.D program in music therapy, holds international collaborations for advancing academics and excels in patient care and community services within such a short span of time. Heartiest Congratulations and best wishes to ISCM, a unique and a world class endeavor for establishing music and yoga therapies as holistic and traditional approaches to complement medical treatment focusing on health and wellness. 25

Stephen Parker (Stoma) Psy.D. Licensed Psychologist Adjunct Assistant School Professor of Counselling and Psychological Services Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota A Message of Blessings and Hope for Humanity To the extent that I am able to bless, allow me to express my joy and my confidence in the foundation of the Institute of Salutogenesis and Integrative Health at Śrī Bālājī Vidyāpīṭha in Puducherry. For years now its new Director, Dr. Ananda Bhavanani, has pursued the goal of creating a vision of health that is both scientifically based as well as being harmonious with the ancient science of Āyurveda, which seeks to help people live well in such a way that they prevent illness from happening in the first place. This is the full meaning of svastha, the natural human state of well-being. This positive vision of health and wellness stands distinct from the notion of health as a mere absence of illness and disorder. In this effort, Dr. Bhavanani has merged the practices of medicine and the practices of yoga from the venerable lineage he carries forward from his father and mother, Śrī Swāmī Gītānanda Giri, and his mother, Śrīmatī Mīnākṣī Devī. The energy and enthusiasm with which he has pursued this vision are clear evidence that our blessings are not needed as he clearly has blessings well beyond what we can offer. In addition to framing this effort within traditional notions of positive wellness, Dr. Bhavanani and his colleagues have produced a prodigious body of scientific research in support of this approach published in medical journals across the world, East and West. It is a shining example of how science and traditional knowledge can collaborate to produce a more complete vision of what health can be. His efforts in the field of yoga therapy promote a discipline that is not simply subsumed as a branch of Western medicine focused on reversing pathogenesis, but is one in which the yogic perspective on the human being integrates and completes what allopathic medicine can offer. In this regard it is a fulfillment of the collaborative vision of medicine advanced by quantum physicist Amit Goswami Ph.D. in his book The Quantum Doctor, which sought to show how allopathy, Āyurveda and homeopathy, by working at different levels of human mind-body embodiment, can work together rather than being seen as competing systems. The inclusion of music therapy in this effort completes the symphony. One interesting difference between Western and Indian psychology is that the theory of emotion in 26

the Indian system is contained not in the scientific philosophies, but in the texts on art and music. Here the healing qualities of rāga and their impact on emotion, rasa, become part of a complete vision of health and wellness. My great mentor, Swāmī Veda Bhāratī, often commented on the fact that the rāgas are recorded experiences of the deepest meditations of the yogis and, as such, have healing powers. Even Dr. Bhavanani’s early training as a traditional vocal and dance performer have not gone to waste. I know that Swāmī Veda would shower his blessings as well on this effort, as he worked for years to facilitate this kind of collaboration and he would rejoice in its achievement. During my visit to the Center for Yoga Therapy Education and Research a few years ago, I was heartened to feel the atmosphere of muditā, joy-mindedness, that pervades the place and its practitioners. Just that sense of an atmosphere that makes one smile has a healing impact. Let that inner smile of joyfulness pervade all that you do in helping people to live well. Blessings and salutations to everyone! Dr. W. Selvamurthy, Ph.D., D.Sc., FAMS, FABMS, FIMSA, FIANS, FIAY President - Amity Science, Technology & Innovation Foundation (ASTIF), Director General - Amity Directorate of Science & Innovation Chancellor, Amity University Chhattisgarh and Chair Professor for Life Sciences (Former Distinguished Scientist and Chief Controller R&D(LS), DRDO) Dear Dr. Ananda, My best wishes for the successful conduct of the event and also wish that Institute of Salutogenesis and Complementary Medicine continue to strive for the \"wellness\" and \"wellbeing\" for all. Commemorative Souvenir for Inauguration of the ISCM of SBV 2022 • Both Music Therapy and Yoga are unique sciences with their own strengths. Both have been proven to be effective approaches for health maintenance of healthy people as well as for treatment of patients with several medical disorders. Their role in health and wellbeing is well supported by scientific research. • By providing quality services, education, and research, CMTER and CYTER have already made strong positions not only in India but also at the international level. • Upgradation of CMTER and CYTER into ISCM is not only a unique union but also holds a strong potential for accommodation of other systems/approaches for health and wellbeing of humans. • As a visiting faculty and on basis of long-term association with SBVU, I heartily congratulate all the authorities and visionaries for formation of ISCM. • Being a medical doctor and an integrative medicine practitioner-researcher myself, I wish all the very best to ISCM for a distinctive journey ahead – to lead the vast area of salutogenesis and integrative medicine by setting an example, to discover what has not been discovered yet, and to relieve pains of those who have not been healed by the available resources yet. • May the divine energies bless the ISCM with a successful journey head, abounding wellness for all the living beings, expansion of boundaries of science to new horizons of knowledge about health, service to the sick, education to the curious, and knowledge to the ignorant!!! 33

MOVING FROM PATHOGENESIS TO SALUTOGENESIS Senior Professor KR Sethuraman, Dean, AIMST University, Malaysia, (Former VC, SBV) “He who wants to recognize what is alive and describe it, seeks first to drive the spirit out of it. Then, he holds the parts in his hands. But he is missing the spirit’s band.”– Goethe in Faust (Part 1, Scene 4) Integrative medicine, coined in the late twentieth century, characterises a new model of health care for the 21st Century. It is rooted both in conventional medicine (CM) and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). It makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare professionals, and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing; whenever possible, it favours the use of low-tech, low-cost interventions. Integrative preventive medicine recognises the value of evidence-based CAM in avoiding or treating the major risk factors for morbidity and mortality; it encourages enlightened physicians to actively discuss the diverse array of CAM therapies with their patients and to incorporate evidence-based CAM into their treatment plans, in addition to conventional medical practice. (Marvasti) Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is a key contributor to the goal of extending disease-free high-quality life; CAM provides therapeutic approaches that are amenable to self-care, are cost-effective, are minimally invasive, and generally have minimal side effects. Therefore, CAM is a key feature of Integrative preventive medicine (IPM) in the 21st Century. The use of CAM in IPM helps us to move away from passive and often unproductive screening-tests and treatment-centred approaches to prevention-focused primordial and primary care. CAM re-emphasizes the value of primordial and primary prevention in our current approach to healthcare (primary prevention is about managing the risk factors to prevent diseases, while primordial prevention is about the avoidance of the risk factors in the first place). The World Health Organization estimates that most people in developing nations receive the bulk of their health care from traditional or indigenous health systems. In France, 75% of the population report the use of alternative medicines; the estimates for the USA, the UK, and Australia all hover near the 50% mark. (Silenzio 2002) 34

Psychologists and neuroscientists have accumulated a great deal of evidence on mind- body medicine, i.e., how states of mind affect the body and conversely how the body affects consciousness. They tell us that attitude influences health outcomes; that a person with a terminal disease can postpone their death until after a significant date; that placebos and hypnosis can reverse established pathology; even that the immune system can be classically conditioned. Due to the clinical implications, there has been an exponential growth in this area of research. On the positive side, there are reliable accounts of spontaneous remission from catastrophic disease, and how temperamental factors (influenced by Music therapy), social support or practices like mindfulness meditation (an integral component of Yoga therapy) can improve health outcomes. (Peters, D. 2005) In the traditional disease-oriented (pathogenic) model of health, the focus is on causes of disease. Accordingly, the disease control strategies target these causes e.g. smoking, overweight and so on. In the salutogenic model, the emphasis is put on the factors which cause global well-being. It focuses on creation and maintenance of good health rather than to look for the cause of specific diseases. This is the opposite of the traditional pathogenic model which focuses on risk factors involved in disease generation. From the therapeutic point of view, the pathogenic model implies the use of external healing devices and interventions to eliminate the pathogenic factors. In contrast, in the salutogenic model, the emphasis is on our internal healing resources and potential for active adaptation to new circumstances. The aim of both approaches is to attain good health; the salutogenic model focuses on positive aspects. (Bhattacharya S, 2020) In view of these recent developments, it is gratifying to note that Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth is launching the Institute of Salutogenesis and Complementary Medicine incorporating the centres of Yoga therapy and Music therapy. Now it is up to the specialties of conventional medicine to be trailblazers in integrating CM and CAM to offer holistic care for the benefit of suffering humanity. STORY OF THE ISCM- REMINISCENCES Dr. N. Ananthakrishnan, MBBS (Madras), MS (AIIMS), DNBE (NBE), FRCS (England), FRCS (Edin), FRCS (Glasgow), FACS., FICS., FACG, FIMSA, FAMS. Dean of Faculty and Professor of Eminence, General Surgery and Health Professions’ Education, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Pondicherry. Having been associated closely with the Centers of Yoga therapy Education and Research and Music Therapy Education and Research from their inception, it is a matter of personal pride and satisfaction for me to see the heights to which they have grown. The process of bringing together the two centers and their upgradation to an Institute of Salutogenesis is but an inevitable milestone which acknowledges their work, dedication and progress and the mark that they have left on society by their work. From the beginning of what has now become SBV, the forward and futuristic looking management of Sri BalajiVidyapeeth was able to see a possible role for Complementary Medicine in an Institution dedicated to the practice of modern medicine. In those early days of the millennium, this was entirely the beginning of a brave new trend against the flow of events in modern medicine. Our sincere thanks to the visionary Chancellor Shri MK Rajagopalan, for foreseeing their role and for standing firmly with them in every inch of their progress. It was this drive which resulted in setting up of facilities for yoga therapy and music medicine in the institute premises within a few years after the start of its flagship institute the Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute. The preliminary efforts of these two initiatives were slow and met with significant opposition and lack of cooperation from the practitioners of modern medicine as they could not visualize the role of complementary medicine initiatives in the then prevalent ambience of modern medicine. However, the success of the initiatives led to the inevitable step of formalizing the role of complementary medicine by the formal creation of CYTER – The Center for Yoga therapy, Education and Research and CMTER – The Center for Music therapy, 36

Education and Research in the year 2010 within a couple of years of the starting of Sri BalajiVidyapeeth. The goal of the Health Science university moved from its traditional role in understanding and countering pathogenesis and disease by caring for and curing illness to Promotion of Wellness for All or Salutogenesis, for both patients and the public in general. Salutogenesis became the watch word of SBV and the overriding focus of the university from 2013. Our thanks are due to the former VC, Prof. KR Sethuraman for his initiative and support in this process. He it was who put the dream of salutogenesis in our minds and enabled it to happen. We are grateful to the present VC, Prof SC Parija for supporting the upgradation of the centers into an institute. During my close association with the centers, almost on a day-to-day basis since the year 2009, I have had the opportunity and the privilege of watching them grow in geometric promotion. From small infantile tottering steps to giant leaps, they have grown from strength to strength to become Nationally and Internationally renowned in promoting Salutogenesis and for providing targeted complementary medical interventions along with modern medicine resulting in better patient outcomes. Their efforts have resulted in dozens of papers in reputed scientific journals creating evidence for their role in addition to allopathy in a specifically targeted manner for several disease conditions. Their role in creating evidence to support the role of Yoga and Music has resulted in converting many skeptics in modern medicine to enthusiastic supporters and participants in research on the role of complementary medicine in allopathy. In addition, the centers have offered their services to promote wellness among the staff and students of SBV. Recognition of their success in this direction has led to the inclusion of the role of complementary medicine in the curriculum of modern medicine for undergraduates in, medicine, nursing, and allied health professions in SBV. These efforts preceded and have supplemented the efforts of the Government of India in this direction. Over the years their efforts have resulted in a better outcome and a better quality of life and wellness for thousands of patients and other members of the public consequent to their in-hospital services and their outreach activities. The centers have received dozens of visitors from other parts of India and Abroad to participate in their activities and familiarize themselves with the centers’ work. Starting certificate courses, Postgraduate diplomas, and Masters’ degree in these areas of complementary medicine was the next logical step. Dozens of students have qualified through these programs. The centers now also run Doctoral programs. All these would not have been possible but for the leadership and hard work of the full-time faculty of the centers, viz. Drs.Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani, Meena Ramanathan and Mr Dayanidy of CYTER and Drs.Sumathi Sundar and Sobhana Jaiganesh, Ms.Bhuvaneshwari, Jenitha Caren and Mr. Stephen of CMTER. 37

Prof Madanmohan, the Founder Director of CYTER has played a pivotal role in bridging Yoga therapy with modern medicine for the past many decades both at JIPMER and at SBV. His role in facilitating excellence at CYTER must be commended with gratitude. The efforts of Dr Bharathi, Professor of Physiology who started Music Medicine in MGMCRI and Dr. AR Srinivasan, Professor of Biochemistry and Dr.Sivaprakash, Professor of Psychiatry who functioned as adjunct faculty before the creation of CMTER and who have been constantly with them subsequently needs to be acknowledged with gratitude by SBV. The merger of the two units CYTER and CMTER and their upgradation to an Institute of Salutogenesis and Complementary Medicine (ISCM) which is seeing the light of day on this day is but an inevitable consequence of their work and an attempt to support them to achieve greater laurels for SBV by their work. I am sure they will be successful in this venture. During the recent visit by the peer team of NAAC, the work of the centers was the subject of effusive praise and recognition. The demand for upgradation was universal, and one hundred percent supported by the visionary management and the project office and Mr. Suresh Babu, Project Manager, who deserve our humble thanks. We are very grateful to Dr.Bhushan Patwardhan, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the NAAC, for inaugurating the ISCM and honoring us by his eminent presence on the occasion. His eminence and expertise in this field is unquestionable. In closure, one is reminded of the words of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow who said,“The heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by single flight, but they, while their fellows slept toiled upwards through the night.” Not only have the faculty of these centers toiled through the night to provide patient care and salutogenic services, but they have also brought recognition and glory to the institution, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth. Having been by their side throughout their journey, mostly as a passive observer and facilitator, sometimes offering unsolicited advice, sometimes blundering by not understanding their needs, but being always carried by the current of their activity and being amazed by their enthusiasm, I must unequivocally say today that today’s event is a matter of great personal pride to me. I must also congratulate the Chancellor for exemplifying Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Statement – “Do not follow where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail behind”. Indeed, he and the centers have not followed the beaten path; he by his initiative and vision and they by their work have created a new path and left a trail behind for others to follow. I wish them all success in their future endeavors. May they become messengers of Salutogenesis for the Nation and the World. May ISCM become a model for the country and the world. 38
