Welcome to AFEX Summer Immersion Camp “CAMP KUZA” AFEX Summer Immersion Camp is a two-week residen al summer program at the pres gious Brookhouse school in Nairobi, Kenya for high school students (grades 10 through 12) from across the globe. It is a transforma onal summer experience where students gather to learn with each other while immersing themselves in the rich culture and beau ful outdoors of Nairobi. “Kuza”, the Swahili word for immersion and nurturing, embodies the core spirit of our camp. We aim to nurture cri cal thinking and problem solving skills in our par cipants as they immerse themselves in problem-based learning tracks, frui ul discussions and hands-on ac vi es. We are guided by a love for students' learning and growth, a commitment to honing each student's unique talents, and a passion for fostering cultural immersion and exchange. Our camp is designed to support all kinds of learners; from the more explora ve student looking to discover their interests to the student who is passionate about a topic and looking to deepen their knowledge through our programs. With our focus on collabora ve learning, the magic of Camp Kuza is the once-in-a-life me opportunity to make meaningful connec ons with passionate people from across the globe. 03

NAIROBI Why NAIROBI Nairobi, popularly known as “Green City in the Sun” is one of Africa's most developed and fastest-growing ci es. This vibrant, dynamic city is home to people of over 100 ethnici es and na onali es, the only na onal park in any capital city in the world, and the con nent's largest tech sphere- the Silicon Savannah. Nairobi features other a rac ons such as David Sheldrick's Trust for orphaned elephants, the Giraffe Center, the lush Karura forest, and the colorful Maasai markets. The city is the seat of the central government and is home to embassies, consulates, and the headquarters of the United Na ons in Africa, a rac ng expats from all over the world. PROGRAMS & LEARNING TRACKS At Camp Kuza, students will challenge themselves in specific academic tracks of their choosing: robo cs and coding; entrepreneurship and human-centered design; and college applica ons and SAT Prep. Our academic tracks are designed to develop problem-solving and cri cal thinking skills and each one will focus on students collabora ng to solve a human-centered problem. All students will select one academic track to complete the requirements of the camp. Our carefully developed curriculum ensures that students make the best of their me while giving them room to explore new ideas and to connect with others. Academic tracks Coding and Robotics In this track, par cipants will be introduced to and guided through the basics of coding and robo cs. At the beginning of the module, par cipants will be presented with a real-life problem. They will work in teams to develop solu ons that incorporate the knowledge and technical skills they acquire. Academic tracks 08 Entrepreneurship & Human-Centered Design The key focus of this track is solving real- life problems using entrepreneurial skills. Par cipants will iden fy a per nent problem and develop a comprehensive solu on that is both feasible and sustainable. They will also be guided through the various tenets of star ng a business and other entrepreneurial ventures. Camp Kuza exciting attractions Nature Exploration Over the weekends, we will explore some of Africa's gems in Nairobi. From the wild green to the breezy blue, Nairobi provides the opportunity for in mate interac on with nature. Our students will par cipate in a service based project with a community partner working ac vely in Wildlife Conserva on and complete 15 hours of community service. Camp Kuza exciting attractions Ethical Leadership Speaker Series The Ethical Leadership Speaker Series will challenge students to think about ways in which they can be contributors and effectors of change in their own communi es. Our goal is to unearth the leader in each student and to ins ll in that leader the spirit of responsibility to their community. Students will also visit the United Na ons Africa Headquarters in Nairobi to learn about their work and the Sustainable Development Goals. Camp Kuza exciting attractions Cultural Immersion Par cipants will visit historical and cultural sites in Nairobi and par cipate in specific cultural immersion programs that feature tradi onal Kenyan music and dance lessons. Our camp will feature Swahili lessons taught by na ve speakers who will introduce and engage our par cipants in the language. Spoken in ten African countries, Swahili is increasingly becoming the common language of interac on in Eastern and Southern Africa's booming, emerging markets.
