EDITOR’S NOTEThe skin we live in, is the theme of the first issue of Patterns magazine. It shows the human body as a pattern itself. How the notion of beauty is more than a stereotype created by society. It is about how appealing and delicate the contours in your body can create. If my skin were a curtain I’d pull back the drapes At the corner of my clavicle. The breathing, feeling organs Of my torso would reveal What you never see. The clenches in my stomach When I catch your fleeting glance My lungs frozen— suffocating Under your cold, soft touch The double-thump of my heart Relishing your bare shoulder Shrinking with the biggest sigh As I watch you walk away. But I always wear my skin Two layers too thick And hide my delightful shame Of delighting in shaming you.16

Freckles is when life splashes Love on the skin of your face. Are points for us to call affectionately. They are your private stars, Which makes your face a universe. The more I count yours, the more I think, And you have infinity under your eyes. It’s beauty written in braille.22
Beauty found in imperfectionDisdain sometimes found in a Reflection, often segregated Into their own section, Behind these defects Many are afraid to mention The attraction they posses Even under skin. 23

I use my eyes to see as anyone else would I see the colors all around me and the faces Of those I love. I love my eyes for they let me See things some can’t like the expression On your face when you make a mistake Or the rare smile that you hide but now. My eyes are tired dark circles surround them And my vision is slowly getting duller The world seems to be turning into A monochrome mess I couldn’t even Tell when the red under your eyes Had turned to the same black as mine.36
