City Hall Tower, PhiladelphiaWilliam Penn StatueCity of Philadelphia Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative EconomyMoorland Studios; Keast & Hood; Adam Jenkins Conservation Services;Conservation Advisory Committee and Philadelphia Museum of Art; EasternScaffolding and Shoring Alexander Milne Calder’s William Penn statue is surely the most recognizedwork in Philadelphia’s vast collection of public art. It was cast in pieces, hoisted above the City Hall clock tower, then welded together in situ in1892. A remarkable feat of craftsmanship and engineering, the sculpture isthe largest bronze statue atop any building in the world. The most recent conservation of this treasure, the fourth since the “SaveWilliam Penn” campaign of the 1980s, was a monumental undertaking.Using soft bristle brushes and non-ionic detergent, the team scrubbedfrom broad-brimmed hat to buckle shoe, repaired areas of corrosionwith state-of-the-art laser equipment, and applied a specially-formulatedmicrocrystalline wax to protect the bronze. A drone documented bothbefore and after the conservation process, as well as the fearlessness ofconservators poised on scaffolding 600 feet above Broad Street. Thisextraordinary project ensures that the beloved symbol of our city willendure. Celebrating 25 Years of Historic Preservation 51

In Memoriam Eric Larsen, PE 1962-2017 Eric Larsen, a structural engineer who co-founded Larsen & Landis, passed away in 2017 at the age of 55, ending a 20-month battle with leukemia. Born in Dover, Delaware, Eric received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Delaware in 1984. After serving as a house-wright in Colonial Williamsburg, Eric began his professional career with Gredell & Paul in 1985. He later worked with Built Form, Inc. and the Philadelphia office of Thornton Tomasetti. In 2006, Eric and Brad Landis founded Larsen & Landis, soon opening an office in Philadelphia. In 2016, the company moved into an historic church in Fishtown that they had renovated themselves. With professional registration in eleven states, Eric performed structural engineering analysis and design for countless projects in Philadelphia, the mid-Atlantic region, and beyond. His expertise included historic structures, which were his professional passion. His personal passion was running, which he did at least daily with an ever-changing crew from among a large group of fleet-footed friends. George S. Young 1955-2018 George Young did all the heavy lifting. As the fourth-generation owner of his eponymous company, one of the oldest hauling and rigging companies in the U.S., George orchestrated the moves of some of Philadelphia’s most beloved icons. Working with his father in 1976, George moved the Liberty Bell from Independence Hall to the Liberty Bell Pavilion for the Bicentennial. Twenty-seven years later, he moved the fragile bell from the pavilion to the Liberty Bell Center. Most recently, his company captured our hearts for removing and replacing Robert Indiana’s 1967 “Love” sculpture. George graduated from the Haverford School and attended Lehigh University. He was a beloved leader in his professional organization, the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association, and he served in many capacities, including Chairman of the Board. His business was about time: uptime, turnaround time, and time to market. One day before his 63rd birthday, George ran out of time. He died suddenly, leaving behind the memory of a generous person who could be relied on for a perceptive observation, creative idea, or positive comment, delivered in his inimitable manner.52 Preservation Achievement Awards 2018 Girard College Founders Hall Grand Jury Award Winner 2006
