Indonesia’s Potential As a Maritime Country Indonesia is geographically an archipelagic country with two-thirds of the ocean area larger than the land. This can be seen by the presence of coastlines on almost every island in Indonesia which makes Indonesia ranks second after Canada as a country that has the longest coastline in the world. This strength is a great potential to advance the Indonesian economy. Data from the Food and Agriculture Organization in 2012, Indonesia currently ranks third in the world's largest fishery production after China and India. In addition, Indonesian waters store 70 percent of potential oil because there are approximately 40 oil basins in Indonesian waters. Of this figure, only about 10 percent are currently being explored and utilized. This shows that the Indonesian people have not felt the significant role of the maritime potential they have, which is marked by the not being managed optimally by Indonesia's maritime potential. With the diversity of Indonesia's maritime potential, including the marine biotechnology industry, deep ocean water, marine tourism, marine energy, marine minerals, shipping, defense, and the maritime industry, it can actually make a major contribution to the welfare and prosperity of the Indonesian people.
